TIMES NEWS NETWORK New Delhi: The Election Com- mission (EC) issued notices to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its candidate from the Gole Market constituency, Poonam Azad, on Sunday.Azad allegedly distributed pamphlets in tourism ministry bags in her constituency on Saturday night. The BJP has been asked to reply to the notice within three days, while Azad has been given 24 hours to file here reply. Azad, wife of BJP MP and former cricketer Kirti Azad, is pitted against Delhi chief minister Shiela Dikshit in this constituency. The notices came hours before polling begins on Monday morning. The EC’s decision followed complaints by the Congress that the central government’s publicity material and BJP pamphlets with appeals by tourism minister Jagmohan and Kirti Azad to vote for Poonam were distributed in vi- olation of the model code of conduct. The EC said that on inquiry into the complaint, it found that the tourism ministry material was indeed distributed in the constituency.The notice to the BJP said if it fails to re- spond within the stipulated three days, ‘‘It will be pre- sumed that the party has nothing to say in the matter and the EC will take action without further reference to the party’’. In its notice to Poonam Azad, the EC asked her to clarify whether the tourism ministry material was printed or distributed to the voters under her authority.
