TIF - The Nation State and Modern Sport MUKUL KESAVAN August 6, 2021 Follow the flag: A sea of Indian flags at the at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the 2015 World Cup. | Wikimedia 'National feeling is not something that has been injected into sport by swaggering players, corrupt politicians, and a scheming media looking to boost ratings; it is native to modern sport, something that is built into its historical evolution.' I think I began to think about sport and nationalism a couple of years ago, when the Indian cricket team decided to take the field wearing specially commissioned military fatigue caps. This was Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s idea and Virat Kohli, who was captain by then, supported it enthusiastically. The gesture was made in solidarity with the soldiers who had lost their lives at Pulwama. The team donated a substantial sum of money for the welfare of the soldiers’ bereaved families. Dhoni is keen on the military. He is a colonel in the Territorial Army. In the 2019 World Cup, he had to be asked by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to remove regimental insignia from his wicket keeping gloves. In that camouflage-cap match, Dhoni and the Indian team literally embodied George Orwell’s famous description of international sport: "War minus the shooting." Orwell’s phrase has been used so often and so widely that it has become detached from its historical context. It Page 1 www.TheIndiaForum.in August 6, 2021 was prompted by his growing recognition of the political symbolism of sport, as a highly visible tool of nationalism.

PAKISTAN–Bi-annual Research Journal Vol. No 56, January- June 2020 ISKANDER MIRZA: A PROFILE Yunas Khan* Ashfaq Ali** Abstract This study aims to descriptively analyze the profile of Iskander Mirza in the light of available information to give a clear picture about the subject matter at hand. Iskander Mirza was a West Bengali politician with rich experience in bureaucracy in British India and witnessed the partition. He was the person who lent support to the cause of the Muslim League and won the confidence of a cantankerous leader like Mr Jinnah in united India. With the passage of time and changing environment, he became a political elite and a power monger. He played havoc with democracy in Pakistan by pulling the military in Politics in Pakistan, particularly General Ayub Khan, who banished democracy for long. The role of Mirza Iskander was simply that of a "lord creator" who played the round of 'find the stowaway' with the popular government of Pakistan in collusion with different lawmakers, which later on destroyed democratic culture in Pakistan perpetually and praetorian rule turned into fait accompli. Mirza detested politicians and democratic governments in Pakistan and instead, preferred military rule in synchronization with civil administration, as the panacea for all the maladies of Pakistan, in order to remain intact in politics and spare his position. Iskander was not only physically overthrown from Pakistan but was permanently banished from the psyches of Pakistanis, too. Despite the fact, Mirza was the guru of Pakistan’s politics he grabbed no academic eye. On dismissal from Presidency Mirza fell from favours and was deported from Pakistan despicably and was not permitted internment.

  • FREEMASONRY in INDIA Introduction
Extract from World of Freemasonry (2 vols) Bob Nairn FREEMASONRY IN INDIA Introduction Culturally India must be amongst the most pluralist societies in the world with multiple religions, a deeply- defined traditional caste system, a proliferation of different States and languages and vast differences between rich and poor. It is justly proud of its history and heritage. It is the home of the world‘s oldest- surviving religions with the largest following and it is a puzzle, at first glance, how Freemasonry could succeed in this environment. To resolve this puzzle it is necessary to look at India‘s history and some of its social and cultural characteristics. Early History – The Vedic Peoples While human life is traced back more than 75,000 years in India, the Vedic Period (1,500-500 BC) is the earliest significant period because it was during these times that the ‗Vedas‘ were being composed. They are a large body of texts written in Vedic Sanskrit, which constitute the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduism, which is probably the oldest mass religion now surviving (Judaism is said to date from the rule of Saul and David in about 920 BC). Hinduism‘s ‗alter ego‘ - Buddhism - was also born in India in the 6th or 5th century BC. The Maurya Empire1 The Vedic peoples were conquered by the Maurya Empire during the 4th and 3rd centuries BC and this is known as the classical period of Indian history, during which India has been estimated to have had the largest economy of the ancient and medieval world, controlling between one third and one fourth of the world's wealth.
