The need for air and protection under water was obvious. Let us find out how mankind conquered the sea in the quest to discover the beauty of the under water world. 1535 – A diving bell was developed by Guglielmo de Loreno. 1650 – Guericke developed the first air pump. 1667 – Robert Boyle observes the decompression sickness or “the bends”. After decompression of a snake he noticed gas bubbles in the eyes of a snake. 1691 – Another diving bell a weighted barrels, connected with an air pipe to the surface, was patented by Edmund Halley. 1715 – John Lethbridge built an underwater cylinder that was supplied via an air pipe from the surface with compressed air. To prevent the water from entering the cylinder, greased leather connections were integrated at the cylinder for the operators arms. 1776 – The first submarine was used for a military attack. 1826 – Charles Anthony and John Deane patented a helmet for fire fighters. This helmet was used for diving too. This first version was not fitted to the diving suit. The helmet was attached to the body of the diver with straps and air was supplied from the surfa 1837 – Augustus Siebe sealed the diving helmet of the Deane brothers’ to a watertight diving suit and became the standard for many dive expeditions.

C. May 15, 1959 Contribution to a German Reef-Terminology by Georg Scheer-1/ In Germany recent publications on coral reefs are lacking due to isolation before, during, and after the war. The younger generation of zoologists has had no opportunity to undertake expeditions to tropical seas. But the interest in coral reefs and their inhabitants has always been keen in Germany. Dr. Hans Hass, the founder of the International Institute for Sub- marine Research, Vaduz (~iechtenstein),has placed his research ship, the yacht "Xarifa" at the disposal of science. In 1953-5b he carried out an expedition to the Caribbean Sea and to the Galapagos Islands in the Eastern Pacific. He led another expedition in 1957-58 to the Red Sea and to the Maldive Islands in the Indian Ocean. I am much obliged to Dr. Hass for giving me the opportunity to take part in both expeditions. During both voyages we were diving with oxygen and compressed-air diving equipment. In this way we were able to study the coral reefs in their many aspects by direct observation. We worked in a team, one col- lecting fishes, others making behavioural studies and so on. Dr. Hass and I were particularly interested in the formation of coral reefs and in the sociological composition of their different parts. Soon we realized the necessity to use a clearly defined nomencla- ture for the different parts of a coral reef, and to coordinate this German nomenclature with the English one.

    Blancpain supports The GOMBESSA Project Scientific expedition and encounter with the cœlacanth April 5th – 15th May 2013 Last April 5th, globally renowned diver and naturalist Laurent Ballesta, equipped with a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms timepiece on his wrist and accompanied by specially trained divers and researchers from the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity SAIAB, together with ten scientists from the Museum of National History and from CNRS, the French National Research Institute, all left for South Africa to undergo 40 days of deep water diving to meet with legendary bottom-dwelling sea creature, the cœlacanth. Locally known as Gombessa, this peaceful giant measures two metres long and was once thought to have become extinct 70 million years ago. However, this rare fish, when discovered alive in 1938 has come to represent one of the most important zoological discoveries of the 20th century: - it is seen as the ‘transition animal’ from backboned fish to the earliest four-legged vertebrate land animals; and - with its lobe fins and ‘primitive lung’, this fish bears testament to our forays within the primordial soup, 379 million years ago. For over a century, the cœlacanth has sparked intense debate between scientists and creationists. Portrayed as the crucial link between fish and land animals, it is without doubt one of the most hotly dissected and debated creatures of our time, and yet we know almost nothing about its way of life. Extremely rare and living over 100 metres deep, very few direct sightings have been witnessed until now. The GOMBESSA expedition, the result of two years’ scientific research, logistical and human preparedness, for the first time enabled observations and scientific experiments to be carried out in contact with a living cœlacanth.

    Spearfishing is the original underwater sport. Guy Gilpatrick is credited in started it off with his exploits hunting fish off the French Rivera with a hand held spear in the 1930s immortalised in his book “The Complete Goggler”. Both Hans Hass and Jacques Cousteau started their diving careers Spearfishing, carrying hand spears and then guns but always breath holding. When sports diving kicked off in the UK in the 50s and 60s Spearfishing was very much part of the sports diving scene and diving clubs throughout Britain were full of Spearos who hunted both by free diving and using the, then new, Aqualung. Spear fishing fell out of favour with mainstream British diving circles in the 80’s as the reality of the indiscriminate Spearfishing in the Mediterranean and other parts of the world became clear. Spearfishing didn’t disappear it just went quiet. People continued to hunt underwater and clubs existed but not as part of mainstream diving as in some parts of Europe. Spearfishing has discreetly resurfaced (excuse the pun), probably because of the growing public awareness of damaging farming and fishing practices along with the national food scares of the last 20 years. This has resulted in people rediscovering self sufficiency and responsible hunting. Responsible Spear fishing is sustainable hunting. The reality is that the fish caught are killed and you shot them with a harpoon gun. That doesn’t sit well with some people but the following factors need to be considered. No other fish is damaged by the exhausting “sporting” fight or by the barbed hook that is embedded in their mouth, the bit they use to catch food and to defend themselves.

In den letzten zehn Jahren sind Unterwasseruntersuchungen zu einem nicht mehr wegzudenkenden und wichtigen Be- standteil marinbiologischer Forschungen geworden. Die technische Entwicklung dieser methodo- logisch definierten Disziplin ftihrte yore Schwimm- und Ger~tetauchen zu Tauchbooten, Un- terwasserh2iusern und ferngesteuerten Fahrzeugen. Die Anwendungsbereiche umfassen Be- obachtung und Aufsammlung bis zur genauen Messung und Probennahme fiir 5kologische Un- tersudaungen. Echte experimentelle Arbeit wird jedoch noch immer fast ausschlieglich iln La- bora~orium durchgef~ihrt. Daher ist Experimentation no& immer auf eine begrenzte Auswahl an ,haltbaren" Organismen, eine begrenzte Zahl simulierbarer und kontrollierbarer Faktoren und insbesonders an einen begrenzten Komplexit~itsgrad der Untersuchungsobjekte gebunden. Dies ist um so bedauerlicher, als sich in der Okologie immer deutlicher die Notwendigkeit yon Systemanalysen abzeidmet. Der gegenw~rtige Standard in Unterwasserbeobachtung und Daten- gewinnung und die Entwi&lung yon Muitivariatentechniken ma&t es m~Sglich, die ,,kontrol- lierten Bedingungen" im Laboratorinm - die zu oi~ eine gef~ihrliche Vereinfachung sind - durch die ,,gemessenen Bedingungen" in situ zu ersetzen. Die Dringlichkeit experimenteller Arbeit an 6kotogischen Systemen kann nicht genug betont werden in einer Zeit, in der wir versuchen miissen, mit den Einfli~ssen unserer Zivilisation auf die natfirlichen Lebensriiume fertigzuwerden, Voraussagen treffen und Modelte entwickeln zu kSnnen.     MARGARET COHEN Denotation in Alien Environments: The Underwater Je Ne Sais Quoi H UMAN OBSERVATION OF THE AQUATIC environment received a dramatic boost with the development in England of the closed- helmet diving suit, designed by the German engineer Augustus Siebe, in the 1830s.1 Siebe’s invention was in wide use by the middle of the nineteenth century, part of a history of dive innovation, which in the 1940s would yield the basis of modern SCUBA, the aqualung, still the preferred equipment for diving today. As divers immersed themselves in the new underwater frontier, they observed life and conditions that differed dramatically from conditions on land. The underwater environment proved so unusual that the people who first sought to convey its features found themselves at a loss for words. Philippe Tailliez was the first captain of the French navy’s pathbreaking team for underwater research founded in 1945 (Groupe d’Etudes et de Recherches Sous-marines, known as GERS), which, among its activities, tested the aqualung co-invented by its most famous member, Jacques-Yves Cousteau. When Tailliez was asked by a fellow diver in the orbit of GERS, Philippe Diol´e, to describe ‘‘how things looked at ...a depth of 30 to 45 fathoms [about 180–290 feet],’’ then at the limit of accessibility, Tailliez responded with ‘‘a doubtful expression: ‘It’s not possible. You can’t describe it.’’’2 Diol´e recounts, however, that Tailliez then ‘‘changed his mind and his face brightened: ‘Wait,’ he said, ‘have you a Rimbaud?’’’Diol´e ‘‘went at once to get him the book,’’ whereupon Tailliez read ‘‘The Drunken Boat,’’ ‘‘under his breath’’and ‘‘marked some lines with his nail.’’In these lines Arthur Rimbaud writes of bathing in ‘‘le poe`me / de la mer infus´e d’astres et lactescent .../ abstract While documentary is generally thought to value clarity and denotation, this article examines nonfiction documentary forms wheremorepoeticpracticeshaveservedas a communicative, if not denotative, tool.
