We have much to celebrate at this meeting: we have two prominent guests, a great program, visits to historical sites on Friday afternoon, and a special celebration for the Society’s 40th anniversary. Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, a Pulitzer-prize winning composer, will be the Honorary Member of 2014. The Honors Ceremony will include a short concert, a short paper on Zwilich, and a brief talk by Zwilich herself. We will also honor Pete Seeger, legendary folk singer and activist, with the Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The Award will be presented posthumously during the Annual Business Meeting at 4 pm on Saturday. The Program Committee, chaired by Chris Wilkinson, has planned a fabulous and diverse offering that includes sessions on transnationalism, participatory technology, gender construction, and many other stimulating topics. The program covers many historical genres, from tune books and shape notes to black metal and Canadian country music. Our Local Arrangements Committee, chaired by Doug Bomberger, has planned many quintessential Pennsylvanian events for the attendees, including a rare visit of seven Anabaptist singing groups in the Amish/Mennonite community in Martindale on Thursday evening. The Friday afternoon tours include visits to the Moravian Church in Lititz, the 18th-century Ephrata Cloister, the Underground Railroad, and the homes of two important 19th-century politicians: Thaddeus Stevens and President James Buchanan. Last but not least, we will celebrate the Society’s 40th anniversary at the banquet with cake and toasts with shrub. The evening will end with dancing! Enjoy! Judy S.
