Today, it has grown into a well-respected school offering both Primary and Secondary Education (Express Stream), and is Singapore’s only private Primary school offering the Ministry of Education (MOE) curriculum. SYAS is a mission school dedicated to moulding the character and inspiring its students to have Integrity, to be Caring, to exercise Cooperation, to Respect others, to take Responsibility, to have Perseverance and to always Trust in God. The Experience SYAS aims to provide a high-quality balanced holistic education, with an emphasis on moral and character development through faith in God and lifelong learning. The school offers Sciences with laboratory practical sessions, and coursework conducted in fully air-conditioned classrooms. We have a diverse range of more than 10 Co-Curricular Activities available to students. Our student body is made up of a multi-racial and multi- religion population, coming from Singapore and at least 20 other different countries. SYAS is EduTrust certified by the Committee of Private Education (CPE) of Singapore, part of SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) and accredited by the Adventist Accrediting Association of Seventh-day Adventist Schools, Colleges, and Universities (AAA), an international body located in USA. It oversees the appraisal and maintenance of quality educational standards across a global network of 7,883 schools, colleges, and universities in nearly 115 countries including Australia, Canada, England, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the USA. Education Pathway AO FORM 034 Page 2/11 Version 10.0 The Curriculum Primary SYAS conducts a regular primary school, offering academic subjects from Primary 1 to 6. Eligible P6 students may go on to take the government Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE). Preparatory Secondary 1 Foundation The Preparatory Secondary 1 Foundation is based on Primary 6 syllabi offered by the Ministry of Education to prepare the students for Secondary 1. Secondary The School offers four years of secondary level education (Express Stream) leading to the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (GCE) O-level examinations conducted by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board. All courses are full-time from January to October/November of each calendar year. Adventurer Club (a Uniform Group) is a compulsory CCA for all Primary 2 to Primary 4 students. Admission As SYAS is a private Christian school, Bible Knowledge is a compulsory subject. It is also compulsory to attend chapel periods. While all eligible applicants regardless of nationality, culture, race or religion are welcome, it is advised that applicants and their parents should be comfortable with these school practices. Applicants seeking admission should agree to comply with these requirements and strict discipline in attendance, punctuality, uniform, behaviour and school work. Applications for admission are accepted for Primary 1 to 5, Preparatory Secondary 1 Foundation to Secondary 3 (Express Stream leading to Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-level exams). There is no new admission into Primary 6 and Secondary 4. Enrolment is not automatic. The admission policy is designed to ensure that the applicants have the capacity to thrive within, and benefit from, all that SYAS offers. The admission procedures take into account three main factors: placement test results, vacancy and interview. Prospective students are encouraged to join SYAS before June. The school allows eligible students to join the school in the middle of the year on a case-by-case basis. However, it is the responsibility of the students to catch up with the lessons in time for the year end promotional examinations. There is no automatic promotion to the next level of study after the year-end examinations. Admission Requirements/Prerequisites 1. Student/Parent/Guardian have read, understood, agreed to and will comply with all the requirements especially the strict discipline of the school. 2. Any person who smokes, drinks alcoholic beverages, use, prohibited drugs or substances of abuse will not be admitted. 3. Any person who bleaches or colours his/her hair in any way to any extent will not be admitted. 4. Any person who has tattoos will not be admitted. 5. Anyone seeking admission must be of good conduct and have attendance of not less than 90% in the previous school. 6. A student who has studied in a Singapore government or government-aided school and is seeking admission into a certain class level must have passed the previous level. For example: A student from Secondary 1 Normal (Academic) seeking admission into Secondary 2 Express must have an overall average of 75% for the Secondary 1 Normal year-end grades. Equivalents (Academic) Secondary 2 Normal = Secondary 1 Express Secondary 3 Normal = Secondary 2 Express Secondary 4 Normal = Secondary 3 Express Secondary 5 Normal = Secondary 4 Express 7. A student who has not studied in a Singapore government or government-aided school previously and is seeking admission must take a placement test in Mathematics and English and must pass both subjects before they are qualified for admission. Students who fail in one or both subject/s and intend to down- grade to a lower level will still need to sit and pass the placement test for the level. 8. Student/Parent/Guardian will treat all information received in the application forms as private and confidential and any dissemination, distribution or duplication of such information, unless required by law or other statutory regulations is strictly prohibited and is the sole property of San Yu Adventist School. The information started to come in about a year ago. Whlle some of the responses were quite detalled, there were others that were rather general and indefinite. There were gaps and omissions and in several instances conflicting statements on certain events. In view of the limited time and the apparent cessation of incoming materials from the field, a small committee was named with Doctor Walton J. Brown as chairman. It was this committee's responsibility to execute the project in spite of the lack of substantiation of certain information. We believe that this is the first project of its kind in the denomination's history. It is hoped that when the various educators and administrators re­ view the data about their own organizations, they will notify the Department of Education concerning any corrections and additions. They should please include supporting evidence from as many sources as possible. It is hoped that within the next five to ten years a revised edition may replace this first one. It would contain not only necessary changes, but also would be brought up to date.

    Image not found or type unknown San Yu Adventist School RUTH CHENG CHAY CHOO Ruth Cheng Chay Choo, B.B.A. (National University of Singapore), is a web content developer and has been a member of the board of management of San Yu Adventist School since 2011. She was a journalist with Business Times, Singapore, and a financial analyst and contracts administrator with Esso Singapore Private Limited. San Yu Adventist School is currently the only Adventist school in Singapore that offers primary and secondary education with government examinations. San Yu High School In 1957, a faithful and generous couple who were members of the Seventh-day Adventist Chinese Church in Singapore – Thomson Chinese Church (TCC) – donated a piece of land to build a new church for the Chinese- speaking congregation in Singapore with the intent of also using the site as a school for the Chinese-speaking population. This donation of land at 297 Thomson Road was the largest donation made by an individual in the Far Eastern Division – the land and building’s combined value was estimated at $300,000 SGD. The Lord sees fit to inspire individuals to sacrifice talent, time, and treasure in order to enable Christian Adventist education to take root. This education has stoutly served the Singapore nation and the region beyond by training students to serve their community and preparing them for the kingdom of God through “caring, quality Christian education.” After TCC began its worship services in the new church in 1957, the church board decided to utilize the basement rooms for a coeducational school.
