(Perhaps while I am writing this, ‘Opera Canada’ is doing the same?) For several years she was based in Vienna, singing lead roles at the State Opera. Elsewhere in Europe she has had great success as Elsa, Arabella, Tatiana, Desdemona and Alice Ford in Munich, Paris, Glyndebourne and Milan. Four years ago in Hamburg she had already caught my at- tention as a great Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes. As is the custom in Europe we joined the fans wait- ing for her at the stage door and asked her whether she is thinking of doing Tosca. Yes, next year in San Francisco. This year she will sing her first Elisabetta (Don Carlo) in Salzburg, Ariadne in Barcelona and her Met debut as Lisa (Pique Dame) is planned for 2004. For us Ottawans of greatest interest will be her first Sieglinde in Toronto’s (continued on page 3) Adrianne Pieczonka Kat’a Kabanova During my trip to Germany in April I had the pleasure of witnessingBrian a Canadian star being born. Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka made the front page of the ‘Hamburger Abendblatt’Law with the comment “A star was born” follow- ing the opening night of Kat’a Kabanova by Janacek at the Hamburg State Opera. -

Volume 5, Number 2 —Die Walküre From the Editor ven though the much-awaited concert of the Wagner/Liszt piano transcriptions was canceled due to un- avoidable circumstances (the musicians were unable to obtain a visa), the winter and early spring months E brought several stimulating events. On January 19, Vice President Erika Reitshamer gave an audiovisual presentation on Wagner’s early opera Das Liebesverbot. This well-attended event was augmented by photocopies of extended excerpts from the libretto, with frequently amusing commentary by the presenter on Wagner’s influences and foreshadowings of his future operas. February 23 brought the excellent talk by Professor Hans Rudolf Vaget of Smith College. Professor Vaget spoke about Wagner’s English biographer Ernest Newman, whose seminal four-volume book The Life of Richard Wagner has never been surpassed in its thoroughness. In the early part of the twentieth century, the music critic Newman served as a counterbalance to his fellow countryman Houston Stewart Chamberlain, Wagner’s son-in-law and an ardent Nazi. The talk also included aspects of Thomas Mann’s fictional writings on Wagner, as well as the philoso- pher and musician Theodor Adorno and Wagner’s other son-in-law Franz Beidler. On April 19 we learned the extent of Buddhism’s influence on Wagner’s operas thanks to a lecture and book signing by Paul Schofield, author of The Redeemer Reborn: Parsifal as the Fifth Opera of Wagner’s Ring. Cast Amendment for Il Trovatore
8 DECEMBER 2015 CAST AMENDMENT IL TROVATORE (Giuseppe Verdi) 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14 and 15 July at 7.15pm ; 17 July at 6.30pm Italian soprano Carmen Giannattasio has withdrawn from singing the role of Leonora in Il trovatore on 4, 7, 9, 12 and 15 July. The role will now be sung by Italian soprano Anna Pirozzi , who will make her Royal Opera debut in this new production by German director David Bösch . She will share the role with Armenian soprano Lianna Haroutounian (2, 5, 8, 11, 14 and 17 July) as previously announced. Anna Pirozzi was born in Naples and studied at the Istituto Musicale in Valle d’Aosta and at the Turin Conservatory with Silvana Moyso. She has won widespread acclaim for her performances as Abigaille ( Nabucco ), the role in which she made her Salzburg Festival debut in 2013 conducted by Riccardo Muti and which she has sung in Florence, Bologna, Parma, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Tel Aviv, Beijing, Valencia, and for Arena di Verona. Her other engagements include Amelia ( Un ballo in maschera ) for Teatro Regio, Turi, and in Parma, Lady Macbeth ( Macbeth ) in São Paulo and Bologna, Leonora (Il trovatore ) in Bologna, Santuzza ( Cavalleria rusticana ) for Rome Opera and Teatro di San Carlo, Naples, Elvira ( Ernani ) in Rome, Tosca for Deutsche Oper Berlin and in Leipzig and Turin, Luisa Miller in Genoa, Leonora and Maddalena ( Andrea Chénier ) for Teatro di San Carlo, Santuzza and Nedda ( Pagliacci ) in Macerata, Aida in Turin, and Elisabetta ( Roberto Devereux ) at the ABAO Bilbao. Berlioz's Les Nuits D'été
Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été - A survey of the discography by Ralph Moore The song cycle Les nuits d'été (Summer Nights) Op. 7 consists of settings by Hector Berlioz of six poems written by his friend Théophile Gautier. Strictly speaking, they do not really constitute a cycle, insofar as they are not linked by any narrative but only loosely connected by their disparate treatment of the themes of love and loss. There is, however, a neat symmetry in their arrangement: two cheerful, optimistic songs looking forward to the future, frame four sombre, introspective songs. Completed in 1841, they were originally for a mezzo-soprano or tenor soloist with a piano accompaniment but having orchestrated "Absence" in 1843 for his lover and future wife, Maria Recio, Berlioz then did the same for the other five in 1856, transposing the second and third songs to lower keys. When this version was published, Berlioz specified different voices for the various songs: mezzo-soprano or tenor for "Villanelle", contralto for "Le spectre de la rose", baritone (or, optionally, contralto or mezzo) for "Sur les lagunes", mezzo or tenor for "Absence", tenor for "Au cimetière", and mezzo or tenor for "L'île inconnue". However, after a long period of neglect, in their resurgence in modern times they have generally become the province of a single singer, usually a mezzo-soprano – although both mezzos and sopranos sometimes tinker with the keys to ensure that the tessitura of individual songs sits in the sweet spot of their voices, and transpositions of every song are now available so that it can be sung in any one of three - or, in the case of “Au cimetière”, four - key options; thus, there is no consistency of keys across the board. -
