En 1975 fue Becaria del Ministerio de Educación de Finlandia por 8 meses para realizar un entrenamiento en taxonomía de musgos de Tierra del Fuego, bajo la dirección del Dr. H. Roivainen, en el Botanical Museum de la Universidad de Helsinki, Finlandia. Celina era una botánica muy apreciada fuera de nuestro país y realizó varias estadías en el extranje- ro. En 1988 viajó a Australia, Tasmania y Nueva Zelanda entrevistádose con colegas y coautores de diversos trabajos en Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Christchurch y Auckland; en 1992 visitó los Esta- Celina Matteri falleció el 30 de noviembre de dos Unidos de América, para consultar herbarios 2004, tras una penosa enfermedad que la mantuvo briológicos del New York Botanical Garden y recluida en su casa durante los últimos años, ya que Missouri Botanical Garden. -

Box 9517, 2300 RA Leiden, Netherlands; 3Leiden University, Leiden, Netherlands �[email protected]; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9804-0120 Abstract Botany is one of the oldest sciences done south of parallel 60 °S, although few professional botanists have dedicated themselves to investigating the Antarctic bryoflora. After the publications of liverwort and moss floras in 2000 and 2008, respectively, new species were described. Currently, the Antarctic bryoflora comprises 28 liverwort and 116 moss species. Furthermore, Antarctic bryology has entered a new phase characterized by the use of molecular tools, in particular DNA sequencing. Although the molecular studies of Antarctic bryophytes have focused exclusively on mosses, molecular data (fingerprinting data and/or DNA sequences) have already been published for 36 % of the Antarctic moss species. In this paper we review the current state of Antarctic bryological research, focusing on molecular studies and conservation, and discuss future questions of Antarctic bryology in the light of global challenges. The genus Grimmia (Musci, Grimmiaceae) in the Himalaya EVA MAIER In memoriam Patricia Geissler ABSTRACT MAIER, E. (2002). The genus Grimmia (Musci, Grimmiaceae) in the Himalaya. Candollea 57: 143-238. In English, English, French and German abstracts. A revision of available specimens of the genus Grimmia in the Himalaya is presented. Methods of specimen preparation are explained. Vertical as well as horizontal distribution of the species in the Himalaya is comparedwith those in European mountain areas. Variability is commented on. A glossary is supplied. Keys are provided for plants with and without capsules, based on costa and sporophyte characters, as well as for forms with leaves without hair-points. Twenty-five species are recognised and described, costal and peristome characters are emphasized. Drawings of mor- phological and anatomical characters as transverse sections of leaves and longitudinal sections of peristometeeth are given. Five new synonymies are established. An appendix provides the list of the Himalayan specimens provided by David G. Long, Edinburgh, and an identification list of selected specimens. RÉSUMÉ MAIER, E. (2002). SPECIES FACT SHEET Common Name: Ryszard's racomitrium moss Scientific Name: Codriophorus ryszardii Recent synonyms: Racomitrium ryszardii. All reports of Racomitrium aquaticum (= Codriophorus aquaticus) from North America refer to Codriophorus ryszardii. Division: Bryophyta Class: Bryopsida Order: Grimmiales Family: Grimmiaceae Taxonomic Note: All North American records for Codriophorus aquaticus (= Racomitrium aquaticum) have been renamed Codriophorus ryszardii (= Racomitrium ryszardii), and C. aquaticum has been restricted to the Old World (Benarek-Ochyra 2000; Ochyra and Benarek-Ochyra 2004a). Nomenclature used in this species fact sheet follows the conspectus for the Racomitroideae proposed for use in the Bryophyte Flora of North America (Ochyra and Benarek-Ochyra 2004b). Technical Description: Plants trailing or to erect, 1-10 cm long, branched irregularly. Leaves green, yellow-green to blackish below, linear-lanceolate, straight or curved at shoot tips, imbricate when dry, 2- 4 mm long, 0.4-1 mm wide, tapered to a rounded, roughened tip; margins entire, recurved, lacking row of large thin-walled cells at base; costa forming prominent keel at back of leaf, extending nearly to leaf tip and never forming an awn; leaf cells multipapillose, the cell walls sinuose-wavy. Setae 4-8 mm long, twisted clockwise when dry. Capsules 2-3 mm long, cylindrical. Peristome teeth 0.6-0.8 mm long. Distinctive characters: (1) Leaf cells multipapillose, (2) leaves imbricate, strongly keeled and consistently awnless, (3) leaves bright green to yellow-green, (4) peristome 1 mm long, (5) moist shaded rock substrate. Similar species: Codriophorus varius (= Racomitrium varium) is very similar, but (1) usually at least some of its leaves have distinct awns, (2) its peristome teeth are an astonishing 1-1.7 mm long, forming a tepee-shaped cone that is frequently broken, and (3) its habitat on rocks, logs and soil is usually drier than that of C. -

Management Plan For Antarctic Specially Protected Area No. 116 NEW COLLEGE VALLEY, CAUGHLEY BEACH, CAPE BIRD, ROSS ISLAND 1. Description of values to be protected In 1985, two areas at Cape Bird, Ross Island were designated as SSSI No. 10, Caughley Beach (Recommendation XIII-8 (1985)) and SPA No. 20, New College Valley (Recommendation XIII-12 (1985)), following proposals by New Zealand that these areas should be protected because they contained some of the richest stands of moss and associated microflora and fauna in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica. This is the only area on Ross Island where protection is specifically given to plant assemblages and associated ecosystems. At that time, SPA No. 20 was enclosed within SSSI No. 10, in order to provide more stringent access conditions to that part of the Area. In 2000, SSSI No. 10 was incorporated with SPA No. 20 by Measure 1 (2000), with the former area covered by SPA No. 20 becoming a Restricted Zone within the revised SPA No. 20. The boundaries of the Area were revised from the boundaries in the original recommendations, in view of improved mapping and to follow more closely the ridges enclosing the catchment of New College Valley. Caughley Beach itself was adjacent to, but never a part of, the original Area, and for this reason the entire Area was renamed as New College Valley, which was within both of the original sites. The Area was redesignated by Decision 1 (2002) as Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) No. 116 and a revised Management Plan was adopted through Measure 1 (2006). -

(Grimmiaceae) from South Africa and Lesotho based on specimens housed in BM, BOL, G, PRE, and STU, as well as type material from B, BM, BOL, FH, G, H-BR, H-SOL, NY, and PRE, is presented. Thirteen species are recognized for South Africa and Lesotho : Grimmia consobrina Müll. Hal., Grimmia donniana Sm., Grimmia elongata Kaulf., Grimmia fuscolutea Hook., Grimmia kidderi James, Grimmia laevigata (Brid.) Brid., Grimmia longirostris Hook., Grimmia montana Bruch & Schimp., Grimmia orbicularis Wilson, Grimmia pulvinata (Hedw.) Sm., Grimmia pygmaea Müll. Hal., Grimmia sessitana De Not. and Grimmia tortuosa Hook. f. & Wilson. Keys based on morphological features, with an emphasis on costal characters, are provided. Each species is described and illustrated using key morphological and anatomical characters, such as transverse sections of leaves. Methods of specimen prepara- tion are also explained and a glossary is supplied. Information on the geographical as well as altitudinal distribution of each species is given, with species distribution maps provided for the area covered by this study.
