Moreover, this impact extends beyond the limited context of sport since, in addition to the obvious economic benefits for many families, it enhances the image of the Spanish-speaking community in the United States. At the level of language, contact allows English to influence Spanish, especially in the area of vocabulary, which Spanish assimilates and adapts according to its own peculiar structures. Baseball, which was invented in the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century, was introduced into Spanish America about thirty or forty years later. -

Phillip CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Indians would be the sentimental choice in the World Series in any other year, against any other team. Fans would support the Indians because it has been so long since they've won the World Series. But the Indians are facing the Chicago Cubs. The lovable Cubbies captured the nation's heart by overcoming curses and winning their first National League championship since 1945 on Saturday night. They are aiming for their first Series title since 1908 and are a popular pick. Oddsmakers Like The Cubs The oddsmakers in Las Vegas, Nevada, who predict sports results, have pegged the Cubs as heavy favorites going into Game 1 on Tuesday night. President Barack Obama is a die-hard fan of the White Sox on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. Even Obama said he was happy to see the North Side of Chicago rocking for the Cubs. Well, all the love toward the N.L. champions has left the Indians as underdogs — a role they've embraced this October. "We believe in each other," first baseman Mike Napoli said Sunday before the Indians held a workout and practice game at Progressive Field. -
Measuring Pitchers' Performance Using Data Envelopment Analysis
Contemporary Management Research Pages 351-384, Vol. 11, No. 4, December 2015 doi:10.7903/cmr.14157 Measuring Pitchers’ Performance Using Data Envelopment Analysis with Advanced Statistics Shihteng Chiu Stella Maris Primary School, Taiwan E-Mail: [email protected] Chiahuei Hsiao National Taipei University E-Mail: [email protected] Huichin Wu National Taipei University E-Mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper evaluates starting pitchers’ pitching performance during the 2008 to 2014 Major League Baseball (MLB) seasons. We use data envelopment analysis (DEA) based on two inputs (i.e., innings pitched [IPs] and per pitched innings) and three outputs (fielding independent pitching, earned run average [ERA], and skill-interactive ERA) to evaluate the performance of the 30 MLB teams’ starting pitchers with IPs greater than 200 in each single season (2008 to 2014, regular season only). We used the CCR models to calculate the overall efficiency, scale efficiency, technical efficiency, efficiency value, and the slack analysis to measure a pitcher’s performance in each single season. The results showed that 4, 3, 4, 3, 5, 3, and 5 pitches reached overall efficiency each year, from 2008 to 2014 (regular season). By analyzing the results and computing performance indexes and benchmarks for each starting pitcher, we determine the true value of each player to help baseball teams select highly indexed players and maximize player efficiency. Quintana-For-Quality Kids Could Be
Quintana-for-quality kids could be biggest – and best-ever – Cubs-Sox trade By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Thursday, July 13, 2017 Jose Quintana promises in the short run to be more impactful to the Cubs than Sammy Sosa was in 1992. Eloy Jimenez could be as valuable to the White Sox as Jon Garland was for the long run. What likely was the biggest trade in Cubs- White Sox history on July 13 – the 15th be- tween the teams involving big-league players – will be one of the uncommon deals that works out for both franchises. Jose Quintana (left) should stabilize the Cubs ro- tation for years to come, while Eloy Jimenez The Cubs have a lefty starter in Quintana (right) enlarges an impressive White Sox cache of who should rank No. 3 in the rotation, if position-player prospects. not higher as the years progress that he is under control for the North Siders. Meanwhile, outfielder Jimenez is rated in the same ballpark as top position-player prospects Yoan Moncada and Luis Robert in a Sox farm system that was almost totally barren of impact youngsters a few years ago. Sox general manager Rick Hahn played poker expertly in initiating the Quintana talks, completed late on July 12, to counterpart Theo Epstein on the final day before the All- Star break. With the July 31 trade deadline still three weeks away, Hahn took advantage of two an- gles in moving Epstein off square one. A southpaw like Quintana would likely be the subject of a numerous serious trade inquiries, including one from a revived Milwaukee Brewers team the Cubs now must catch in the NL Central.
