They acquired right-handed pitcher Spencer Patton from the Texas Rangers for minor-league infielder Frandy Delarosa. Patton, 27, broke into the big leagues with Texas in 2014 and went 1-0 with an 0.96 ERA in 9 big-league relief appearances before splitting 2015 between the Rangers and Class AAA Round Rock. He went 2-0 with 11 saves and a 1.67 ERA in 26 Triple-A relief outings and 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA in 27 big-league relief appearances. Patton has gone 15-14 with 33 saves and a 3.49 ERA in 147 career minor-league appearances, all but 12 in relief, covering five minor-league seasons. He has struck out 364 in 268⅓ innings pitched, an average of 12.2 strikeouts per 9 innings. Delarosa, 19, batted .273 in 62 games for Class A Eugene this past season. He originally signed with the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2012. Making the 40-man: Friday was the deadline for clubs to add minor-leaguers to the 40-man major-league roster or risk exposing them to the Rule 5 draft in December. The Cubs selected the contracts of four players from Class AA Tennessee: infielder Jeimer Candelario, catcher Willson Contreras, right-handed pitcher Pierce Johnson and infielder Dan Vogelbach. The Cubs' 40-man roster stands at 37. Candelario, who turns 22 next Tuesday, combined to bat .277 with 35 doubles, 4 triples, 10 home runs and 64 RBI in 128 games between Class A Myrtle Beach and Tennessee this year. Contreras, 23, was named the Cubs' minor-League player of the year after batting .333 with 34 doubles, 4 triples, 8 homers and 75 RBI in 126 games with Tennessee. Contreras turned in a .413 on-base percentage and a .478 slugging percentage. Johnson, 24, is 22-13 with a 2.50 ERA in 65 minor-league games, all but 3 as a starter, in four minor-league seasons since being selected by the Cubs in the compensation round (43rd overall) of the 2012 draft out of Missouri State University. He has struck out 309 in 327 innings. He went 6-2 with a 2.08 ERA in 16 starts with Tennessee this season. Johnson finished his season with 7 starts in the Arizona Fall League, going 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA. Vogelbach, 22, batted .272 with 16 doubles, 7 homers and 39 RBI in 76 games with Tennessee. He walked 57 times to contribute to his .403 on-base percentage. -- Cubs.com Cubs protect 4 prospects from Rule 5 Draft By Carrie Muskat CHICAGO -- The Cubs selected the contracts of pitcher Pierce Johnson, catcher Willson Contreras, infielder Jeimer Candelario and first baseman Dan Vogelbach from Double-A Tennessee on Friday and added them to the 40-man roster, preventing them from being selected by another club during next month's Rule 5 Draft. The 40-man roater now has 37 players. The quartet were among six players listed on MLB.com's Top 30 Cubs Prospects who were set to be eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. Johnson is ranked seventh, Contreras 10th, Vogelbach 13th and Candelario 20th. Contreras, 23, was the Cubs' Minor League Player of the Year in 2015 after batting .333 with eight home runs, 34 doubles, four triples and 75 RBIs in 126 games at Tennessee. He batted .283 with three home runs and five doubles in 14 games in the Arizona Fall League before he suffered a hamstring injury and was shut down. Johnson, 24, went 6-2 with a 2.08 ERA in 16 starts at Tennessee this season with 72 strikeouts over 95 innings. Slowed in Spring Training because of injury, the right-hander pitched for the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League and struck out 21 over 24 2/3 innings in seven starts. Vogelbach, 22, was a second-round pick in 2011, and battled injuries in 2015, finishing with a .272 average in 76 games at Tennessee with seven home runs, 16 doubles and one triple. Candelario, 21, shined in the Arizona Fall League where he batted .329 in 21 games with five home runs, eight doubles and 15 RBIs in 21 games with the Mesa Solar Sox. This past season, he batted .291 in 46 games at Tennessee after opening the season at Class A Myrtle Beach, where he hit .270 in 82 games. The two players on MLB.com's Top 30 Cubs Prospects who were not protected from the Rule 5 Draft are right- hander Corey Black (No. 19) and right-hander Daury Torrez (No. 29). Black, 24, was moved from the rotation to the bullpen this season at Tennessee. Acquired from the Yankees in the Alfonso Soriano trade, he was 3-5 with a 4.92 ERA in 37 games, including nine starts. He pitched in the AFL, and gave up 11 earned runs over 8 2/3 innings in eight games. Torrez, 22, was 10-6 with a 3.75 ERA in 24 games (23 starts) at Myrtle Beach, striking out 86 over 134 1/3 innings. All Major League teams had until 7 p.m. CT Friday to declare which players would be added to the 40-man roster to protect them from being selected in the Rule 5 Draft, which will be held Dec. 10 during the Winter Meetings. Teams pay $50,000 to select a player in the Major League phase of the Draft, and the player must stay on the selecting team's 25-man roster for the full season. If not, he is offered back to his former team for $25,000. -- Cubs.com Cubs get righty Patton from Texas for Minors infielder By Carrie Muskat CHICAGO -- The Cubs continued to add arms, acquiring right-handed pitcher Spencer Patton from the Rangers for 19-year-old Minor League infielder Frandy Delarosa on Friday. Patton is the third reliever the Cubs have added this week. They also claimed lefty Jack Leathersich off waivers from the Mets and signed right-handed pitcher Andury Acevedo to a contract. Acevedo, 25, had spent the last four seasons pitching in the Yankees' organization. With the moves, the Cubs' 40-man roster is now at 33. An Illinois native, Patton, 27, was a 24th-round Draft pick of the Royals in 2011, and he has appeared in 36 games with the Rangers (nine in 2014; 27 in '15), all in relief. He also appeared in 26 games for Triple-A Round Rock in '15 and picked up 11 saves, fanning 36 over 27 innings. Texas acquired him in July 2014 from Kansas City for Jason Frasor.
