Fox Sports Notes, Quotes & Anecdotes FOX SPORTS NOTES, QUOTES & ANECDOTES Sabathia/Lackey Square-Off at Fenway – Yankees/Red Sox Saturday @ 4PM ET on FOX Yankees Put Faith in Colon to Rise as Solid No. 2 YANKS/SOX RENEW BIGGEST RIVALRY IN BASEBALL – The trading deadline has passed and teams are gearing up to make a postseason run. The FOX SATURDAY BASEBALL GAME OF THE WEEK kicks-off August with the biggest rivalry in the game on Saturday, August 6 (4:00 PM ET). As of today, merely one game separates the first-place Red Sox and the second-place Yankees in the AL East division. Winners of five in a row, the Yankees have rode the strong pitching of Cy Young candidate CC Sabathia as they’ve closed the gap on the Red Sox. Sabathia is scheduled to take the mound Saturday against hard throwing Red Sox right-hander John Lackey who looks to shut down a powerful Yankee lineup at Fenway Park in Boston. Meanwhile, a rematch of the 2010 NLCS takes place in San Francisco as the Giants host the Phillies. Sporting the best record in MLB, Ryan Howard and the Phillies aim to take the NL from the 2010 World Champion Giants. The MLB on FOX pregame show originates live from the Fenway Park in Boston, MA with host Chris Rose . Once game action begins, Rose joins Joe Buck and Tim McCarver as a field reporter. As FOXSports.com writer Bob Klapisch notes, the Yankees are putting a lot of faith in Bartolo Colon . “The Bombers have already gotten a return on their investment with Colon: his 8-6 record and 3.30 ERA have revealed flashes of his 2005 prime,” writes Klapisch. “When it was time to make a decision on Ubaldo Jimenez , Yankees GM Brian Cashman asked himself who he’d really prefer to have on the mound in Game 2 of the postseason: Jimenez or Colon? The verdict had been rendered by the Yankees' hierarchy well before Sunday’s deadline. Why take a chance on a pitcher who’d lost 3-4 mph on his fastball, has never been the same since the first half of the 2010 season, had never won a postseason game and, through no fault of his own, has never proved he could handle AL East-type pressure? Cashman correctly pointed out, ‘For us, pitching in a sold-out Stadium against the Red Sox, that’s the same thing as the playoffs.’ Using that metric, Colon was the better choice, especially since Jimenez would’ve cost the Yankees so much in young talent. But that still doesn’t address October’s biggest question: Who gets the ball after Sabathia? As of today, it is Colon or bust, which is another way for the Yankees to say: Our fingers are crossed.” To read Klapisch’s full column, visit http://tinyurl.com/4396rnd WHAT DO RICK PORCELLO & BABE RUTH HAVE IN COMMON? Repeal of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike out Again? INTRODUCrION "Baseball is everybody's business."' We have just witnessed the conclusion of perhaps the greatest baseball season in the history of the game. Not one, but two men broke the "unbreakable" record of sixty-one home-runs set by New York Yankee great Roger Maris in 1961;2 four men hit over fifty home-runs, a number that had only been surpassed fifteen times in the past fifty-six years,3 while thirty-three players hit over thirty home runs;4 Barry Bonds became the only player to record 400 home-runs and 400 stolen bases in a career;5 and Alex Rodriguez, a twenty-three-year-old shortstop, joined Bonds and Jose Canseco as one of only three men to have recorded forty home-runs and forty stolen bases in a 6 single season. This was not only an offensive explosion either. A twenty- year-old struck out twenty batters in a game, the record for a nine inning 7 game; a perfect game was pitched;' and Roger Clemens of the Toronto Blue Jays won his unprecedented fifth Cy Young award.9 Also, the Yankees won 1. Flood v. Kuhn, 309 F. Supp. 793, 797 (S.D.N.Y. 1970). 2. Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs and Sammy Sosa hit 66. Frederick C. Klein, There Was More to the Baseball Season Than McGwire, WALL ST. • Arrieta's Second-Half Decline Bites Cubs
Arrieta’s second-half decline bites Cubs at just the wrong time in Game 3 By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Tuesday, October 18, 2016 The location problems that afflicted Jake Arrieta in the second half came back to bite the Cubs hard Tuesday in a 6-0 de- feat, their second consecutive shutout loss to the Dodgers in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series. The Dodg- ers back-to-back post-season shutouts was the first in their storied franchise his- tory. Pitching like the third starter to which his performance level had often devolved, Ar- rieta’s gopher balls to Yasmani Grandal and Justin Turner revived the age-old It was a tale of two pitchers: Jake Arrieta (left) continued his second-half decline, while ex-Cub paranoia about playoff collapses from Rich Hill pitched the game of his life. Cubs fans, whose heroes must now play Photos: baseball-reference.com and mlb.com. from behind with a 2-1 deficit. And they’re forced to do it in two more games at Dodger Stadium, never a comfortable place for the Cubs since it opened in 1962. Their best hope to restore equilibrium is rattling 20-year-old rookie starter Julio Urias in Game 4 Wednesday with the Cubs hurling the veteran John Lackey, with his big- game playoff winner resume and 38th birthday looming this coming Sunday. Cubs manager Joe Maddon’s tinkering with the slumping lineup, which began with Game 3, might continue as the situation approaches criticality. Eighteen straight scoreless in- nings tossed at the previously prodigious lineup will conjure up nightmares of past postseason pratfalls with the Cubs hitting only .190 versus breaking balls so far this year.

SHOULD YANKEE LETTER STAY PRIVATE? | Page 1 SHOULD YANKEE LETTER STAY PRIVATE? By: Jack Greiner on December 16, 2020 on graydon.law The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit is considering whether a letter from Rob Manfred to New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman should be sealed. The letter was part of a lawsuit in the Southern District of New York filed by fantasy baseball players who contended that the league and the teams should be liable for the losses of those who bet on games that may have been tainted by electronic sign-stealing. The trial court threw out the lawsuit, but before it did, it ruled the letter was irrelevant. But the trial court ruled that the letter could be released to the public. And the Yankees are not happy about it, evidenced by their suit in the Second Circuit. The Yankees argue that because the court ruled the letter irrelevant, it’s none of the public’s business. The fantasy players argued that Manfred’s letter, which concerned a 2015 incident where MLB fined Boston for illegally using an Apple watch to relay signs to players. In the fantasy players’ view, the letter showed that MLB knew the cheating was occurring, didn’t stop it and let bettors to wager money without knowing the results were tainted. We’ll see if the Yankees have any success with this. But they are confusing two concepts. While the letter may be irrelevant for purposes of the lawsuit, that ruling doesn’t put it off limits to the public.
