AUTUMN COURSES IN CLINICAL SURGERY I. LONG COURSE OF TUTORIALS, LECTURES AND CLINICAL CONFERENCES 21st August to 18th October 1965 DURING THE EIGHT-WEEK period from mid-August to mid-October the College organizes each Autumn a course of whole-day clinical conferences at in the area. A similar course is held each Spring, from mid-February to mid-April. The students selected to attend these courses are divided into two groups which visit four hospitals each week. On Wednesdays during the course they receive tuition from tutors, and on Saturday mornings they attend tutorials at the College on specialist subjects. They may also apply to attend the evening lectures in the Short Course (see page 183) from 27th September to 16th October. The Course is conducted by the Penrose May Tutor in Clinical Surgery, Mr. Neville Stidolph, F.R.C.S. Fees Long Course 50 guineas; Evening Lectures 5 guineas. Applications Applications for the Autumn Course are due before 1st June: for the Spring Course before 1st December. Students are chosen by a Selection Committee. The number of applications usually exceeds a hundred, and since each Long Course can only accommodate 32 students a number of applicants may be offered a place on the Short Course as an alternative. PROCEEDINGS OF COUNCIL IN JULY AT A MEETING of the Council on 29th July 1965, with Lord Brock, President, in the Chair, Mr. R. Cox, M.B.E., F.R.C.S., of Westminster Hospital, Professor F. E. Stock, O.B.E., F.R.C.S., of Liverpool, and Mr. D. M. Morrissey, F.R.C.S., of Birmingham, were admitted as members of the Court of Examiners. Sir Stanford Cade, K.B.E., C.B., F.R.C.S., was appointed Director of Surgical Studies in the College for a period of three years. The Clement Price Thomas Award was presented to Professor Ake Senning of the University of Zurich. Mr. J. H. Hovell, T.D., F.D.S.R.C.S., of St. Thomas's Hospital, and Mr. N. L. Rowe, F.D.S.R.C.S., of Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton, were admitted as members of the Board of Examiners for the Fellowship in Dental Surgery (Dental Section). Dr. D. D. C. Howat, F.F.A.R.C.S., of St. George's Hospital, was admitted as a member of the Board of Examiners for the Fellowship in the Faculty of Anaesthetists. Mr. Terence Ward, C.B.E., D.D.Sc., F.D.S.R.C.S., of The Hospital, East Grinstead, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, was co-opted as a member of the Council for the year 1965/66 representing Dental Surgery. The Handcock Prize was awarded to G. A. Pettitt of Guy's Hospital Medical School. The death of Mr. F. R. Moser, Hon. F.D.S.R.C.S., benefactor of the College and Faculty of Dental Surgery, was reported with deep regret. The Council agreed, subject to the usual provisos in respect of numbers and preparatory courses and to the concurrence ofthe Boards of Faculties, to the holding in 1966 of Primary F.R.C.S., F.D.S. and F.F.A.
