Philip Miller 1891 Census. Now aged 17yrs. I could not find any record of Philip still living with his parents in the census of 1891. He is now aged 17 and it looks as if he has left home to find work. However in the 1891 census there is a Philip Miller listed at: Stratton Audley, Oxfordshire. Phillip Miller [note spelt with two LL’s common error] Aged 17 Born Manchester Employed as a groom [This was his occupation throughout his working life so I am confident that this is our Philip Miller]. The census form for some reason does not show an address or a head of Household Public Record Office: RG12/1171 Number of Schedule: 74 : Stratton Audley Village: Stratton Audley Ecclesiastical Parish: Stratton Audley

The entry 74, shows that quite a number of grooms were employed as well as other servants. Listed as a visitor on the census day is. Colonel John P Brabazon Aide de Camp to the Queen [Victoria?] with his soldier servant.

Notes: Extract from the Burton Daily Mail Saturday 21st October 1944 B.E.M FOR HANBURY AIRMAN The award of the B.E.M. (Military Division) to Corporal Reginald Philip Miller, R.A.F; of Hanbury – an engineer before he joined the service in 1941 – for “Fine courage in saving a pilot’s life.” Was announced this morning. The citation states that in April 1944 an Oxford aircraft crashed and caught fire. The pilot was trapped by his feet and unable to release himself. Corporal Miller who was in the vicinity hurried to the scene of the accident and immediately endeavoured to extricate the airman, who was surrounded by the flames. Whilst the rescuer was thus engaged an explosion occurred, followed by several minor explosions. Despite these and intense heat, Corporal Miller persisted in his rescue efforts but was unable to free the pilot. Meanwhile, two American officers had arrived on the scene with a fire extinguisher taken from their car. Corporal Miller then went back into the flames and aided by the officers and an American soldier he succeeded in extricating the pilot. “Corporal Miller displayed fine courage, and the prompt and gallant action undoubtedly saved the pilot’s life “ the citation concludes.

Notes for Annie Wainwright FORMER WHITEGATE HEAD-MISTRES’S DEATH (Annie Newman, nee Wainwright, wife of Levi Newman and mother of Elizabeth who married Philip Miller)

FUNERAL AT HARTFORD The funeral took place on Monday week at 15, Darwin Street, Castle Northwich, of Mrs. Newman, who for over 40 years was headmistress of the Whitegate Girls School, and was held in the highest affection and esteem by colleagues and old scholars alike. She had reached the grand old age of 81 years, and was able to get about to within three days of her demise.

Mrs. Newman completed her apprenticeship at the Sandbach Model Schools, under Canon Armitstead and had the privilege of having her name on the honours board. Judge Temple and family were greatly attached to Mrs. Newman whom they always affectionately referred to as “Little Annie”. Most of her holidays were spent with the family, and when the Rev. J.R.Temple was diocesan inspector of schools he made it a special point of inviting Mr. Newman (then Miss Wainwright) to Castle Vicarage to stay with them.

Ancestors of Philip Allen Miller page 13

Mrs. Newman gained a first-class certificate at Warrington College and within a very short time of her success was appointed headmistress of the Whitegate Girl’s School, when the Rev. W. Whitley was vicar. He was followed by the Rev. H.G. Hignett and the Rev. H.G. Youard.

Mrs Newman made many friends at Whitegate, chief among these being Mrs. Turner, Over Hall and the late Augusta Lady Delamere.

After 25 years Mrs. Newman was presented with a purse of gold in appreciation of her loyal service and in recognition of the faithful manner in which she had performed her duties. Mrs. Newman remained at school about five more years, when she was compelled to retire owing to a serious breakdown in health which made it impossible for her to carry on her duties and was again presented with a purse of gold and a beautiful testimonial.

As soon as she recovered Mr. Cecil Parr, the banker, asked her to tutor his only son, preparatory to his going to public school. This was the last occasion Mrs. Newman undertook scholastic duties.

From now onwards her domestic duties were as much as she could accomplish and she assiduously set herself the task of carrying them out with loving care and devotion to her family to within practically three months of her death. In fact, as we have said, Mrs. Newman was going about within three days of her death when the change came and she was obliged to remain in bed, gradually sinking but recognising the members of her family up to the last. She passed peacefully away on the 21st July surrounded by most of the members of her family. Many letters of loving sympathy were received from friends and scholars.

An Appreciation

Psalm 8.5 – “Tho madest him lower than the angles, to crown him with glory and worship.”

Her activity is not now bound by the narrow circle in which we live and move; it will be ever enlarging, ever becoming more extensive and diversified. Her intellectual powers are not subject to dissolution and decay like dust; they will continue in operation and effect for ever.

Ancestors of Philip Allen Miller page 14

As she exerted them here, so much the better will she use them now, so much the more will she effect by them. She will see before her an incessant enlargement of her sphere of sight and action, an incessant increase of knowledge, in virtue in activity, in bliss. The whole immensity of Gods creation, the whole unnumbered host of intelligent beings, all the hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledge in Jesus Christ, the unfathomable depths of Divine perfection – what noble employments, what displays of her powers, what pure joys, what everlasting progress, do not these afford to one whose life on earth was spent in doing good to others!

Notes for John Allen Kelly's Directory of 1891 of the Counties of Derby, Notts, Leics & Rutland Shows a Verger at Somersall Herbert as Sarah Allen. According to the census of 1861 there were other Sarah Allens in the village who I belive to be John's Mother born about 1813 and his sister, Sarah Ann Allen born about 1845. [These facts yet to be confirmed. John's First wife Jane, Died age 28, of Phthisis (TB) the same year as she gave birth to daughter Sarah Jane.

In a collection of Memorial Inscriptions from Doverirdge, St Cuthbert's Churchyard, collected and transcribed by Alf Beard, there is a listing for John Allen and wife Georgina.

John (1st marriage) and Brother Thomas married sisters Jane and Margaret Toman

Notes for Jane Toman Jane Toman wife of John Allen, died at the age of 28 the same year as daughter Sarah Jane was born. SJ went on to be brought up by Ellen Georgina Allen (nee Swinscoe), John’s second wife. At first I thought that Jane Toman died in childbirth but this is not so, her death certificate says she died of Phthisis the medical term for TB.

Jane Toman’s family were Irish. Her father was Arthur and her mother Catharine (nee Callighan). I have been told that they came from Boyle, Co. Roscommon. The person who told me is unable to substantiate this and says he has not been able to trace any record in Ireland.

According to the census for 1851 the Toman’s were living in Uttoxeter. Arthur was a ‘Lodging House Keeper’. They had children Ann, Catherine, Margaret and Jane. Jane was born in Uttoxeter the others in Ireland. In the 1851 census Margaret is one year old and born in Ireland so I guess they came to Uttoxeter in 1849/50. In a later census Arthur is described as a ‘Hawker’ and on Jane’s wedding certificate he is a

Ancestors of Philip Allen Miller page 17

‘Labourer’ so he moved jobs quite a bit!

The daughters Jane and Margaret Toman married brothers John and Thomas Allen.

They were sons of Thomas Allen abt. 1812, (he came from Colwick, Civil Parish Sudbury, Derbyshire) and Sarah Abt. 1813. (She came from Norbury, Derbyshire). In addition to John and Thomas they had other children, Ellen, Emma, Sarah Ann. All the children were born at Somersal Herbert, Derbyshire were their father was a farmer.

Notes for Ellen Georgiana Swinscoe Spelling on her marriage certificate the spelling for Ellen Georgina has been amended to Georgiana on all other findings it is Georgina. Her listing on BMD shows death recorded in reverse as Georgina E Allen. Record at Ashbourne 1st Qtr 1939 Vol 7b Page 829. Genuki website: In a collection of Memorial Inscriptions from Doverirdge, St Cuthbert's Churchyard, collected and transcribed by Alf Beard, there is a record of her and John Allen's gravestone showing her death date as 1959. The original petrol pump can still be seen outside the garage(2006). The bus ran between Stafford and Uttoxeter. Jack Robinson drove the bus and his sister Hilda was the conductress.

Hilda On her retirement the Cock Inn continued in the family run by Hilda. In addition to running the pub and the bus they also found time to farm. Notes for Abraham Newman

Abraham Newman was born at Adlestrop in September 1816, in the days of George III. History brushed him at the age of two when Warren Hastings, the first Governor-General of India was buried with great pomp in nearby Daylesford Churchyard. He couldn’t really remember the muffled drums of the scarlet clad soldiers, the black horses, and the seemingly endless procession of carriages and throngs of people. He was carried bin his mother’s arms so he could say “I was there”.

1881 Census, Abraham recorded as living at Mansion House, Adlestrop Glos. With Wife Mary and Fanny dtr. Also Grandson Walter E Born 1877.

The next entry on the Census page is Sarah Hope who I believe is their dtr.

Mary Newman nee Boots mother of all these children used to walk up to Daylesford House and do all the washing; the next day she went back and did all the ironing. There would be no less than twenty people living at the mansion. The washing would include bedding and everything else, all done by hand. For this she was paid one shilling 1/- (5p). a week. I (R.B.) was told “She was the most beautiful woman who ever walked up Adlestrop Church” by an old woman who remembered her. She died soon after she and Abraham celebrated their 50th anniversary. Notes: George is living in Adlestrop for the 1871 census aged 22 working as a groom. 1881 census: Aged 33 and is in Llandegai, Caernarvonshire, at Penrhyn Stables, working as a groom for Lord Edward G. Penrhyn. It was here he met his wife who was head Lundry Maid. George was married to Eliza in Sherborne, Dorset in 1885. In 1887 and

Ancestors of Philip Allen Miller page 25

1888 son George Harry and daughter Mary Louise were born in Dorset. I believe he was working at the Compton Stud. Sandley. Extract from Kelly's Directory of Dorsetshire 1895. Sandley is 3.5 miles west-by-south and 5 miles east from Templecombe. This is the headquarters of the Compton Stud, where there are over 100 loose boxes and nearly 300 acres of land laid out in suitable paddocks. There is also a covered ring for the stallions, the walls of which are almost completely covered with prize cards won by them; 20 or 30 thoroughbred stallions and noted breeders of both thoroughbred and half-bred stock; a show is annually held in August, bringing together all the stock of the above stallions, and Messrs. Tattersall preside over the sale held in connection. In 2006 It is called Sandley Stud, [I spoke to an employee of the current owners who claimed to know nothing of its history] it had become the National Stud in 1943. It eventually became too small and the National Stud was moved to Newmarket in 1963. The Stud had at one time also been owned by the Wingfield Digby's of Sherborne Castle Estate. The 1891 census shows that he had moved from Dorset and was living at 18 Exning Road, Newmarket and working in the stables. The 1891 census also shows that his parents Abraham and Mary were also living in the same house in Newmarket, at 74 Abraham was employed as a groom. By 1901 George and family had moved to Skelton, Yorkshire where he was employed at the Fairfield Stud by Capt. Vyney as head groom for a breeding stud. Abraham had returned to Adlestrop aged 84 to live with his daughter Sarah Hope. I assume that he was living in ‘Tied’ property at Skelton that went with his job. On retirement he would have been required to vacate the property, hence his return to Adlestrop Eliza died 18th May 1910 and is buried at Adlestrop.(Headstone) Later George was burried next to Eliza but with no headstone. George re married in 1912 to Ada Haynes. Georges parents had eleven children, five sons ( one died in infancy) six daughters. Somewhere along the line the house they occupied in the back row at Adlestrop became to cramped, even for those times, to contain their growing family, so Mary and Abraham were temporally moved to Oddington for a year and it was there that George was born on the 10th August 1847. MARRIAGE: The wedding of George and Ada took place in the morning of the 8th April 1912. In the afternoon of the same day his daughter Agnes married Vincent Jefferies.

Notes for Arthur Toman According to the census for 1851 the Toman’s were living in Uttoxeter. In a later census Arthur is described as a ‘Hawker’ and on Jane’s wedding certificate he is a ‘Labourer’ so he moved jobs quite a bit!

From Uttoxeter Library Service: I am pleased to tell you that there was a street in Uttoxeter called SPICEAL Street on the 1861 census. It had previously been called Spiceal Lane and is named on our oldest map of 1658. The Street existed until the early 1900s when it was demolished and incorporated into the factory land of JCB. JCB moved from the site in the 1980s and it was developed for a new Health Centre and a row of small houses now

Of him all we know is that his wages were nine shillings (45p) a week. As far as I know there is no headstone, if there had been one it is gone. The Newman family headstones did reach in a line from near the vestry door to the outer edge, ending with Abraham Newman born 1816 died 1914. Source notes recorded by Rosemary Bauchman nee Jefferies

Notes for Jane Ford One endearing glimpse of Jane has survived. In 1818 she carried her two year old son, Abraham, to the next village of Daylesford to witness the funeral there of Warren Hastings, first Governor General of India, so he could boast in later years “I was there”. This he did as an old man of ninety-seven, although he always added, “Can’t say as I remembers much about it.” Notes compiled by Rosemary Bauchman nee Jefferies.
