Associated with the British Arts and Cras Movement, he was a major contributor to the revival of traditional British textile arts and methods of production. His literary contributions helped to establish the modern fantasy genre, while he played a significant role in propagating the early socialist movement in Britain. Born in Walthamstow, Essex, to a wealthy middle-class family, Morris came under the strong influence of medievalism while studying Classics at Oxford University, there joining the Birmingham Set. Aer university, he trained as an architect, married Jane Burden, and developed close friendships with the Pre-Raphaelite artists Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti and with the Neo-Gothic architect Philip Webb. Webb and Morris designed a family home, Red House, then in Kent, where the latter lived from 1859 to 1865, before moving to Bloomsbury, central London. In 1861, Morris founded a decorative arts firm with Burne-Jones, Rossetti, Webb, and others: the Morris, Marshall, Faulkner Co. Becoming highly fashionable and much in demand, the firm profoundly influenced interior decoration throughout the Victorian period, with Morris designing tapestries, wallpaper, fabrics, furniture, and stained glass windows. In 1875, Morris assumed total control of the company, which was renamed Morris Co. Although retaining a main home in London, from 1871 Morris rented the rural retreat of Kelmscott Manor, Oxfordshire. Greatly influenced by visits to Iceland, with Eirikr Magnusson he produced a series of English-language translations of Icelandic Sagas.     INTRODUCTION ‘PERHAPS THE GREATEST ARTIST OF THE LOT’ By all accounts Henry Wilson was a quiet man, modest to a fault. At first sight, apart from his distinctive aquiline profile, his appearance was unremarkable. He was not widely known to the general public, and even amongst friends it was hard to get him to talk much about his own works, which were mostly unsigned. When he died in Menton, France in 1934, he was buried in a leased plot, long since obliterated. Such unassuming worldly credentials belie the powerful originality of his work and his prodigious skills as a craftsman. In dramatic architectural schemes, and in the expressiveness of his executed buildings and sculptures; in his richly evocative jewellery and fine metalwork, in inspirational lectures and writings; in all these, he displays an exceptional intensity of invention and insight. The works summon up deep-seated meanings which often surpass their material reality. They, and the thinking that underlies them, most thoroughly represent Henry Wilson. And it is through the diverse, yet linked, aspects of his creativity that his character and impact is most properly revealed. As he himself wrote in 1902 ‘design is the expression of your personality in terms of the material in which you work’.1 Janet, the astute and observant wife of Wilson’s fellow designer and ideologist C.R. Ashbee, testified to the admiration felt for Wilson in arts and crafts circles when she described a group of Art Workers’ Guild members gathering for a rehearsal of their masque Beauty’s Awakening in May 1899.     THE BRITISH arts & Craft Movement Social history Following hot on the heels of the Aesthetic Movement, Arts & Crafts Style was a socially progressive art and design movement spearheaded by William Morris, which went on to gather strength in the Arts and Crafts workshops of the Cotswolds and the industrial garden cities of Port Sunlight & Bournville in the early 20th century. Where Aestheticsim was ‘art for arts sake’, the Arts & Crafts Movement was founded on socialist principles. Its pioneers championed the revival of traditional craftsmanship and good quality materials. Arts & Crafts designers believe that individually crafted wares were integral to good interior design and should be both useful as well as pleasing to the eye. An attempt to reform design and decoration as a stand against the ‘sham’ furnishings displayed at the Great Exhibition, Morris and his partners used natural materials, good craftsmanship, simple forms and organic shapes to create their pared back, honest look. A short-lived movement, Arts & Craft style clearly differentiated itself from the historical reproductions of the early Victorian era, with its botanical influences underpinning the sinuous lines of Art Nouveau. The City of the Five Crafts in his romance The Water of the Wondrous Isles (1897), described in the opening extract, exemplifies this potential for a harmonious interaction between built and natural environment. Gerard’s description of the city engages both the protagonist Birdalone and the reader in an imaginative enactment of the journey there in which the sense of expectation engendered by Spaces of Utopia 4 (Spring 2007) 114 climbing the high land resolves into a vision of intense aesthetic delight.
