History Founded in 1975, LSC is one of the country’s first non-profit law firms dedicated to representing children and youth. We pioneered the model of multidisciplinary holistic advocacy that is considered best practice in children’s legal services today.

dren Vision L All children should be raised in a safe, stable, and nurturing environment with equal access to hi meaningful education and other services that are necessary to thrive and grow. Our youth deserve c positive alternatives to unnecessary placement in foster care, juvenile justice facilities, and immigration detention. for

S Approach Our young clients may be assigned by the court, referred by a caring adult, or they may come to us on their own, via a phone call or by visiting a drop-in clinic. When we open a case, we assign an attorney and social worker who function as a team and tap into diverse community resources to address the interconnecting concerns of every client—legal, physical, social, psychological, economic, and

Service educational. We empower our young clients to take active roles in their cases and the critical decisions L that affect their lives.

Our Clients

Lega Each year we respond to 1,500 requests for information and referrals, and handle over 500 newly opened or continuing client cases involving foster care, guardianship, emancipation, school expulsion, and immigration matters. The majority of our clients are children of color and half speak a primary language other than English.

SPeciaL honoree

Liz Butler Steyer

For over 20 years, Liz Butler Steyer has been an advocate for children and

dren youth in the Bay Area. She is currently the Executive Director of the Ath- L letic Scholars Advancement Program (ASAP), a college access program in

hi San Francisco that works with low-income students of color. Prior to join-

c ing ASAP, Liz worked at Legal Services for Children for over 12 years in a variety of legal and managerial roles, including Managing Attorney and Acting Director of the organization. In 2004, she transitioned from staff member to the Board of Directors, holding the position of Board Chair for from 2006 – 2010. Liz also serves on the Board of the Giants Community S Fund and John Gardner Fellowship Association.

After many years of involvement with LSC, Liz is stepping down from her position on the Board of Directors. In honor of her dedication to this organization as an intern, fellow, staff attorney, managing attorney, act- ing executive director, and Board chair, LSC is establishing the Liz Butler Service Steyer Fund for Child Advocacy to reflect Liz’s commitment to legal services for our community’s most vulner- L able children.

Every year, LSC hosts 10-15 legal interns who receive extensive training on juvenile law and trauma-informed

Lega legal services. LSC also sponsors a Certificate in Child Advocacy and honorarium for qualifying interns when they graduate from law school. The Liz Butler Steyer Fund will provide the resources to sponsor one internship for an emerging child advocate and graduate each year, and will stand as an enduring tribute to our friend and colleague, Liz Steyer.

Pro Bono advocate honoreeS

The following recipients of the 2013 Pro Bono Advocate Awards were selected for diverse reasons—devoting long hours of service or taking on multiple cases, stepping up for a particularly challenging case, employing innovative legal strategies, or going “above and beyond the call of duty” in a notable way. Whatever the c nature of the case or the situation of the client, each of these attorneys has made a life-changing contribution to the well-being of a child and we are proud to salute them today.

Cary Chien is an associate at McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the firm’s Silicon Valley office. He focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation and has litigated a broad array of patents in hardware, software, search engine, and television program guide technologies. He earned his B.S. in computer science from Santa Clara University and then became a test engineer for NetIQ, an enterprise systems management software company. While completing his J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law, Cary clerked in the Office of the City Attorney in San Jose, and was Chief of Staff to a San

Jose Councilmember and an aide to a California State Senator. With coast-to-coast immigration interviews, vening With LS

Cary and a team of lawyers and assistants from McDermott, and then law student Sharan Dhanoa, secured e asylum for their young LSC client – an unaccompanied minor from India, who was attacked and whose father was killed by political rivals. n a
