As the title boldly suggests, the song illustrates the effects of the sleep disorder and how difficult it is to live with or overcome insomnia. Faithless’ Maxi Jazz sheds light on his experience while living with insomnia. He expresses that he finds it difficult to sleep at night, or keeps waking up in the middle of the night. Both are symptoms of the sleep disorder. He seems to have tried several means to get a goodnight’s sleep, but all his efforts have proved futile. This includes his attempts to get rest by smoking weed and Cess (raw form of marijuana). The singer recalls that after taking these drugs, the only feeling he derives is hunger, which he’s unable to satisfy, thus causing his restlessness to worsen. In the end, the singer registers his utmost frustration and directly asks “Insomnia” to release him from its bondage, so he can dream of having pleasurable moments. Who wrote “Insomnia”? This Faithless hit was released by all three members of Faithless: Sister Bliss, Rollo Armstrong and Maxi Jazz. When did “Insomnia” come out? Faithless first released this song (which is considered their biggest hit) on 27th November, 1995. This Faithless classic was released as a single from their 1996 album Reverence . FYI, Faithless released Reverence as the maiden album of their career. Notable Live Performances of “Insomnia” Faithless performing “Insomnia” live at London’s iconic Alexandra Palace in July 2005. Some CD pressings do have a radio edit of that mix, but that is the only place to get the full mix. Download? Forget it- nowhere to be seen. It's actually astounding how ignorant people are of this mix given how popular the other mixes are and Faithless are as a whole. Even Beatport (other download sites are available) have an 'Original edit' available but in reality it is merely the edit of the Monster Mix. Why don't you upload the Original Mix to Youtube? That's what I do when I can't find videos for my submissions. The true original mix seems to be relatively unknown compared to the other mixes. That is also the reason why this submission is listed separately from the other 'Insomnia' links on this site- they are all linked to either the album version or the Monster Mix. Right, who replaced the 'Insomnia' video with the album version? It might say it's the original version on YouTube, but it isn't. For the record, the original version of Insomnia is not the album version, it's not the Monster Mix and it's not the Moody Mix. The original version is approx 11 mins long and is contained on this release http://www.discogs.com/Faithless-Insomnia/release/165850. There was one video on YouTube that I originally embedded here that was the original. That video has now been removed from YouTube. There are no replacements on YouTube and no replacements that I can find anywhere else either. As far as I can tell, every single video currently on YouTube that claims to be the original mix is wrong! It's not quite so obvious in the other versions but it's pretty clear to my ears in this one. It's certainly a classic and distinctive drum loop. This version was vinyl promo only on the original '95 release, it didn't make the full vinyl release and only a radio edit was on the cd single. Then, when it was re-released in '96 the well known Monster Mix was the lead version and the original mix was nowhere to be seen, not even on the promo. Ok first of all: thanks for reminding me of this, Chinny. Yup, never heard this exact version before. Checked out the single I have and indeed the only "original" on there is the "original mix radio edit". The funny thing is that the part you put down as sample is also in a lot of the other versions (http://www.whosampled.com/sample/28410/ at 4:05). If you told me there it was Raze, I wouldn't believe you. But in this version I tend to agree with you. So I'd say: nice find! This is the original mix of Faithless 'Insomnia', which is not particularly well known compared to the Monster Mix (which many assume to be the original), the Moody Mix, and the version on 'Reverence', which many also take to be the original.
