OUR OPINION You’ve earned it, Mr. Gatzke lan Gatzke, a fifth-grade math and science teacher at Fort White Elementary, has been A at it for more than 40 years. Thursday afternoon at Parkview Baptist, he final- ly got the recognition he deserves, claiming the title of district Teacher of the Year. Congratulations, sir. Like most teachers, Gatzke doesn’t do it for rewards. But now that he’s got the big one, it sure feels good. “You work hard every day. You do what you do and you see other people doing the same thing, but to be recognized by your peers and the community, it just means a lot to me,” Gatzke told our reporter after Thursday’s ceremony. Gatzke moved up here from Broward County, and their loss was certainly our gain. COLUMBIA 4, SUWANNEE 0 FOUR FOR THE SHUTOUT Caballero, Russell-Martinez, Garner & Ward all score in rivalry win By ZACH ABOLVERDI [email protected]

The Columbia girls soc- cer team posted its sixth shutout of the season Thursday, and the second against Suwannee. After defeating their rival 5-0 on the road in December, the Lady Tigers held the Lady Bulldogs scoreless once again in a 4-0 victory. CHS made all four goals in the first half. “I’m very proud of them,” Columbia coach Chip Garner said. “They abso- lutely have grown as a team throughout the season. Tonight was just a good rep- resentation of how much they’ve applied great soccer tactics. “We were prepared for this matchup. We played them earlier in the season, so we kind of had an idea of what to expect. We put everybody in the place they needed to be and we were effective.” Midfielder Ember Russell-Martinez struck first, scoring on a free kick in the fourth minute of the game. Garner raved about his senior captain and called her the “unsung hero” of the team. 7. Pitt (11-5): Panthers have been surviving despite their rebounding — Pitt has won the battle on the boards just once in its last eight games.

8. Miami (10-5): Hurricanes are fun to watch due to their outside shooting, but they’ve struggled on the glass — they have the fewest offensive rebounds per game and rank third-worst in defensive rebounds.

9. Notre Dame (10-6): Sharing is caring — the Irish lead the ACC with 18.19 assists per game, more than one whole assist than second-best Duke.

14. North Carolina (8-8): Heels’ losing skid isn’t Brandon Robinson’s fault — he hit a career-high five 3-pointers in the loss to Clemson.

League looks top-heavy: Sure, seven of the conference’s teams are in the top 60 of the NCAA’s NET rankings, 1. Auburn (15-0): The Tigers have won 26 but let’s not kid ourselves, this league is top-heavy in a big way. Arkansas (13-2): They’ve been shaky on 48 percent field goal percentage. the road (falling behind by 11 on the road at Ole Miss is the most recent example), but with Isaiah Joe is ramping things up.

WEEKEND SPOTLIGHT 5. Florida (11-5): Tuesday’s rout of Ole Miss helped push the Gators to the top of the second tier, but truth be told they could be anywhere from No. 5 to No. 10.

6. Georgia (10-5): The win at Memphis gave us high hopes for the Auburn game, but the Bulldogs fell flat. They’re somewhere in the middle of the pack.

7. Tennessee (10-5): The Vols have been playing great defense, but that shooting! UT went 6-for-31 from 3-point range in a narrow win over South Carolina.

8. Mississippi State (10-6): We still have a feeling Ben Howland’s team puts this together before season’s end, but their fate lies in an upcoming stretch that includes five teams above them on this list.

9. Alabama (8-7): Best offense in the league (83.2 ppg), but the worst defense (78.7 ppg). If the Tide can get stops, they’ll move up this list.

10. Missouri (9-7): We did not see that awful performance against Mississippi State coming. The Tigers play the league’s best defense (58.9 ppg), but can’t take nights off offensively.

11. Ole Miss (9-7): What a disappointing stretch for the Rebels. The road has been unkind — Ole Miss has lost all four of its road games this season.

12. Texas A&M (8-7): Pushing LSU to OT shows what this team is capable of, but it’s still too offensively challenged to do much damage.

13. South Carolina (8-7): Frank Martin seems at wits’ end. A.J. Lawson is legit, but the rest of the roster has done little to impress.

14. Vanderbilt (8-7): A close game at Auburn had us thinking this team was ready to make some noise. A clunker against A&M put that back into clear view.

Beautiful balance,” Garner said. “In the first period I was praising the shape and the balance that we’ve been working so hard on for all season and it finally clicked. I think that match we had with Forest last Friday (a 2-1 loss) kind of woke them up a little bit and it was what they needed to grow as a team.” The Lady Tigers improved their record to 11-1-1, while Suwannee dropped to 6-7-1. CHS will be on the road Tuesday against Santa Fe before facing District 2-6A oppo- nent Lincoln in Tallahassee on Friday. “We’ve got two killer opponents next week,” Garner said. “We’ve got Santa Fe, which has always given us problems. We did play them earlier this season (a 3-1 win), but I expect them to be much stronger this time around. And then we’ve got a big district game in Lincoln. “Lincoln is No. 1 in our division. They’re having a great season and we’re going to playing on artificial turf in Tallahassee, so it’s going to be an experience. Tonight we just wanted to make a state- ment that, hey, we’re coming out and we’re going to stay locked in to what we know we’re capable of doing. And we executed it.” FGC’s star guard trio of Brown, Cobb and Smith combined to score 18 of the 24 points during the game’s decisive to close the first half. Nate Henderson also had all five of his points in that stretch as the T-Wolves’ four sophomores boat raced the Eagles into the break. Smith scored all 15 of his points in the first half. Cobb finished with seven for the night. “As coaches we were talking brief- ly before we went into halftime and saying, ‘Hey man, is that the team we’ve been looking for to step up and show up in a half?’” Ruise said. “To Photos by JORDAN KROEGER/Lake City Reporter come out and see them just have fun LEFT: FGC guard Diamond Smith puts up a shot against Trinity Baptist College on Thursday night. Brown then opened the second half with eight straight points, includ- ing two threes, before the Eagles finally ended their scoring drought on a Duncanson layup with 16:28 to go to cut the T-wolves’ lead to 54-18. TPC never climbed closer than 33 points in the second half. Battle made it 65-32 with a bucket but FGC answered with a 10-0 run. After the T-wolves went up 58-18 in a bucket by Jeremiah Tisme, Eagles coach John Jones argued Tisme traveled and Jones received two technicals to get ejected from the contest. Jones even shouted in the faces of the official before being escorted to the locker room. FGC went on to lead by as many as 43 points in the second half. “We’re peaking but we’re not at the top so we’re not going to stop here,” Brown said. “We’re gonna keep rising.”
