November 2017 NOVEMBER 2017 A Day in the Life of a Writers’ PA A discussion with George Ghanem & Rick Cisario, Writers’ PA’s on 9JKL By George Ghanem & Rick Cisario George: Well, I should start by saying we refer to each other as “Daytime” and “Nighttime” for obvious reasons. Rick: Obviously. G: I’m the Writers’ PA during the day. I get in early and make sure everything is ready for the writers. I brew some coffee and get the day going with some lunch. R: You’re the “opening act.” You grease the wheels, let them know what’s up and by the time they’re ready to rock n’ roll... G: I hit ‘em with some more coffee? R: No, I come in. G: Right and you’re sorta like the “Post- Credits Easter Egg.” R: That’s one way to look at it. Probably diminishes my role a little. Another way to look at it as if I’m batting clean-up. You load the bases and I hit Grand Slams. Grand Slams mean dinner. G: You could also be referred to as the “bottom of the order.” R: I’m using my college degree every day. Not once have I had to dig through the garbage for a guest star’s car keys. G: Right... PHOTO: Robert Voets ©2017 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved ©2017 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. TCM BREAKFAST CLUB SCREENING The Long Goodbye I 1973 Directed by Robert Altman With characteristic fearlessness, director Robert Altman dared to offend the purists with his 1970s interpretation of the Raymond Chandler classic The Long Goodbye (1973). It turned out to be a triumph for both him and its star, Elliott Gould. TCM writer David Humphrey assesses the film and describes it as a fine tribute to Altman, who died on November 20 at the age of 81. Raymond Chandler devotees were perhaps entitled to feel screen, and plainly gave priority to injecting comedy into the nervous at the news that Elliot Gould had been cast as Philip persona of Chandler’s sardonic, hardbitten private detective. David Thomson The Guardian, Friday 7 November 2008 larger | smaller It swings ... Elliott Gould in The Long Goodbye. Photo: Sportsphoto Ltd/Allstar Every now and then, every national or local film theatre reckons it's time for another season of "Jazz and the Movies". So all the over-cooked chestnuts come out of the fire again: we'll have Clint Eastwood's Bird; Nat King Cole playing WC Handy in St Louis Blues; Sinatra as Frankie Machine in The Man With the Golden Arm; Jazz On a Summer's Day, with Anita O'Day in that hat; Jackie McLean soloing on Shirley Clarke's film of The Connection; Diana Ross as Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues.
