How fair is your favourite coffee? TUESDAY 21 NOVEMBER 2017 COVER STORY 05

Fair-trade coffee is more expensive than regular coffee because in most cases, coffee producers do not put into account the wage they have to pay the harvester. A shot of espresso contains about 80 coffee beans which means that a harvester hand-picked 80 coffee cherries for this shot. So, by having fair-trade coffee, you are not only enjoying a good cup of coffee but most importantly, a fair cup of coffee where a happy worker is gaining their living for the hard work done. Most of the recent and successful coffee shops in Qatar have spe- cialty coffee which means that the whole process of harvesting and roasting the beans has been done with extra care. Which in turn means that it has a higher price point because of the extra time and effort put into it. However, buying methods still differ in terms of how much the farmer is making in the end of the day. Specialty coffee pay premium prices for the sake of higher quality and sustainability. Interestingly enough, most coffee shops are trans- parent about the origin of the coffee beans as well as the brand and from where did they get them. So, by searching for the name, you can know under what conditions the beans have been produced. They key in helping coffee farmers live a happier life with fair-trade could be easily done by raising awareness about such a simple adjust- ment which makes a more significant difference.
