YCP 5Th Film Fest.Cdr Yashwant Intl. Film Festival 2015 Yashwantrao Chavan The birth centenary of Shri Yashwantrao Chavan (1913 - 1984) was celebrated last year in a befitting manner by the Government of Maharashtra and the Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Mumbai. It was an acknowledgement of his stellar contribution as first Chief Minister to the making of modern Maharashtra, as a State with progressive policies and a decentralized democratic set up of administration. In November, 1962, he became the Defence Minister in the aftermath of the India-China conflict. He worked hard to restore the morale of the armed forces and to enhance his strength through modern weapons, better equipment, organisational changes and a harmonious relationship with the armed forces. The efforts paid off in the India- Pakistan conflict in 1965. Subsequently, he held the high offices of Union Home Minister, Union Finance Minister and Foreign Minister of India. In 1979, he became the Deputy Prime Minister of India. He was a freedom fighter, effective parliamentarian and an astute administrator. He was a connoisseur of fine arts, a great lover of books and an author of acknowledged literary merit. He was very fond of watching good films, plays and stage performances of folk-art. The 'Yashwant' International Film Festival is a tribute to the outstanding personay of Yashwantrao Chavan. Yashwant Intl. Film Festival 2015 Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan Presents Jointly with: Supported by: Government of Maharashtra Yashwant Intl. My best wishes for the success of the 5th Yashwant International Film Festival. Sharad Pawar President Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Mumbai Yashwant Intl. Film Festival 2015 Message Since the inception of the Yashwant International Film Festival (YIFF) four years ago, we have made sure to offer a unique experience to all those who are a part of this festival. We are proud of the fact that YIFF as a festival is able to distinguish itself and stand out as a favorite amongst filmmakers and delegates alike. The festival is a great opportunity for film enthusiasts and filmmakers to interact with each other and enrich one another with their thoughts, ideas and stories. The world always has its share of problems, but a world where people watch films and continue to love cinema is a world where there is always hope for the future. At the Yashwant International Film Festival and Pune International Film Festival this year we remember two events that shook the world - 2014 saw the centenary of the First World War and it has also been 25 years since the fall of the Berlin wall. These two events were vastly different in nature - one left a deadly trail of death and destruction in its wake and the other brought people together. However, both have something in common - they gave rise to an enormous amount of literature and art. It is through such creative endeavours that humans try to comprehend the world around them and build bridges with people. If human beings try to love each other instead of fighting each other, the world will be a much better place. Cinema is one such medium that makes it possible to encompass the entire humanity, to tell stories about humankind and to thus spread a message of universal peace, love and tolerance. Being a technology-driven medium, Cinema also shows how modern technology and innovation can bring people together in a kindred spirit. At YIFF, we are presenting exclusive four films regarding humanity and world peace. We would like to encourage all our participants to make connections with people all over the world through this magical medium we all love! On behalf of team YIFF, I welcome you to the 5th edition of the festival and do hope that you enjoy yourself as much as we have in presenting this festival to you. All Rights Reserved. 2 This dissertation titled Unfolding Time to Configure a Collective Entity: Alternative Digital Movies as Malaysian National Cinema by HSIN-NING CHANG has been approved for Interdisciplinary Arts and the College of Fine Arts by Erin Schlumpf Visiting Assistant Professor of Film Studies Elizabeth Sayrs Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT CHANG, HSIN-NING, Ph.D., April 2017, Interdisciplinary Arts Unfolding Time to Configure a Collective Entity: Alternative Digital Movies as Malaysian National Cinema Director of dissertation: Erin Schlumpf This dissertation argues that the alternative digital movies that emerged in the early 21st century Malaysia have become a part of the Malaysian national cinema. This group of movies includes independent feature-length films, documentaries, short and experimental films and videos. They closely engage with the unique conditions of Malaysia’s economic development, ethnic relationships, and cultural practices, which together comprise significant understandings of the nationhood of Malaysia. The analyses and discussions of the content and practices of these films allow us not only to recognize the economic, social, and historical circumstances of Malaysia, but we also find how these movies reread and rework the existed imagination of the nation, and then actively contribute in configuring the collective entity of Malaysia. 4 DEDICATION To parents, family, friends, and cats in my life 5 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my advisor, Prof.

Exposed and concealed Roma conflict: Representation of contemporary Roma conflicts in Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary Abstract: Roma conflict is one of the dominant issues that societies and cinemas of Eastern Europe should face. Recently, a variety of deeply touching films have been created such as Just the Wind (dir. Benedek Fliegauf) and Judgement in Hungary (dir. Eszter Hajdú). While the films show disgruntlement or even large-scale protests and riots, the films’ plots rarely present the causes of such events. Documentary film projects with sociological ambitions, however, stand out above these films, they are knowledgeable and insightful but their range is only local. There are some exceptional cases that overthrow this rule, such as Moving a Settlement or The Roma King (dir. Viliam Poltikovič). On the other hand, the superproductions such as Koza (dir. Ivan Ostrochovský) or The Queen of Silence (dir. Agnieszka Zwiefka) mainly concentrate on the formal side at the expense of the simplification of the film’s content. My purpose is to present various variants of the representation of Roma conflict in these films. Keywords: Roma, Central Europe, film, politics “Roma Issue” has progressed to become one of the most serious areas related to Central Europe since the beginning of 1990s. The time of political transformation has created a new context for the issue present in the collective consciousness for many decades.
