Lees. Abstract. Characters of male and female genitalia in insects in general, especially in Lepidoptera, are essen- tial for species identification as they display extensive morphological variation. In embedded genitalia, due to the positioning of the genitalia and the pressure of the cover glass, the appearance of some diagnostic charac- ters might be confusing. This potentially leads to taxonomic misinterpretation. Additionally, the photography of genitalia structures in ethanol is difficult, due to drift or hardening of genitalia. A method is presented here to fix the position of the genitalia in ethanol, which allows comparative close up photography. The advantage of the method is demonstrated by illustrating the sacculus projection of three Triphosa species. Introduction Reproductive organs of insects are extremely diverse in form and function and they are a valuable source of information for taxonomic purposes. The complex genitalia, especially the sclerotized male genitalia in the Lepidoptera, have been extensively used in taxonomic revisions (Scoble 1992; Hausmann 2001).

For every individual species, that is extant in every reported cave and gallery, as well as the authors who have made the report, is included. New data, most recently gathered are re ported as well. Several species are new for the cave fauna of Bulgaria, some others are all together new to the caves. One species is new for the Bulgarian fauna. The number of the established up until now Lepidoptera species in the caves and galleries in Bulgaria is 32. Introduction For a considerable length of time the Bulgarian cave fauna has been of interest to many researchers, both Bulgarians and foreign. Although considerable data concerning the fauna of Lepidoptera of the caves and galleries in Bulgaria exists, having been published in nu merous articles, up until now only one study (Skalski , 1972) concerns the Lepidoptera cave fauna.

L’étude documentaire des collections, conduite en interne ou en partenariat, ou encore les études scientifiques menées par des chercheurs extérieurs, aboutissent généralement à des publications qui participent de cette valorisation. Subterranean Biology 27: 31–51. https://doi.org/10.3897/subtbiol.27.28909 Abstract Being characterized by the absence of light and a reduced environmental cyclicity, the subterranean do- main is generally regarded as temporally stable. Yet, in the proximity of cave entrances (twilight zones), patterns of sunlight and darkness can be detected within the 24-hour day–night cycle. In parallel, changes in the abiotic and biotic conditions are expected; however, these patterns have been rarely explored in animal communities dwelling in the twilight zone. We performed a biological investigation in a small abandoned mine in the Western Alps, monitoring it once per season, both during the day and at night. At each survey, we collected data on the spatial distribution of the resident species, their activity patterns, and the main microclimatic parameters.

Nat. Croat., Vol. 10, No. 3, 197–206, 2001, Zagreb. This paper appears to be the first contribution on cave macromycetes in Croatia. During the systematic biospeleological field work in the Dinaric karst area, eight more or less stable popula- tions of the entomogenous species Cordyceps riverae Pacioni (Hypocreales, Ascomycota) have been lo- cated since 1990. Some 200 speleological sites have been visited so far in order to find both living and/or infected hosts, with 69 sites colonized by two subtroglophilic lepidopteran species of the genus Triphosa (Geometridae) which are apparently the only surely known hosts of the fungus. C. riverae was collected from five localities (situated in Gorski kotar, Kordun and Dalmatia regions) out of eight speleological sites in which the species was recorded. A full description of C. riverae,a comparison with the holotype collection, detailed ecological observations, as well as the mapping of known distribution of both the species and host are given. C. riverae is recorded in Croatia for the first time.

  • Note on Lepidoptera from Bulgarian Caves
Int. J. Speleol. 4 (1972), pp. 87-95. Note on Lepidoptera from Bulgarian Caves mgr Andrzej W. SKALSKl* The Lepidoptera, which are a typically phytophagous, epigean group of insects, are represented in caves only as trogloxenes and subtroglophiles. However, they merit attention as essential components of the parietal accociation. In recent years Lepidoptera aggregations in caves have been studied only by Kowalski (1965, several species) and Crallam (1968, 1968a, Triphosa haesitata). Fig. 1. SKALSKI Unfortunately the niche of the Lepidoptera, in particular that of the Mi- cro-Moths (Microlepidoptera), in the cavernicolous habitat is still little known in many European caves. Only the caves of Rumania are well known in this respect; from this country are listed 30 species of cave-inhabiting Lepidoptera (Capuse & Georgescu 1962-1963; Dumitrescu & colab. 1958, 1967; Georgescu 1962,1964; Negrea & Negrea 1968); 16 species are reported from Bulgaria (Gueorguiev & Beron 1962), and about 70 in the World. But of this number some species occur more frequently and regularly in caves. The material for this work was collected by the author, in great part, in some Bulgarian caves of the Lakatnik region in the Stara Planina Mountains(Fig. I) during a botanical and zoological excursion organized in 1960 year by the Students' Association of Naturalists of the Jagiellonian University as well as during his stay here in the year 1970. At the time of my visit in Bulgaria of 4 specimens of Microlepidoptera taken by Mr.

In Europe there are 486 spider 32 species known to dwell in caves and other subterranean habitats, distributed across 22 33 families. Despite a few species being able to colonize caves across the whole continent, 34 approximately 90% of the species show a restricted distribution, occurring exclusively in 35 one or two countries. From a biogeographic perspective, Southern Europe emerges as the 36 main hot spot of subterranean spider diversity, showing the highest richness of endemic 37 species. Compared to other temperate regions of the world, some families appear to be 38 well represented and other poorly represented (or lacking) in European subterranean 39 habitats. Overall, it appears that the taxonomical knowledge on subterranean spiders in 40 Europe is sufficient, but not evenly distributed.
