In the swift and fateful debates which preceded the bl,ast from hell-deeps of war, the rights, powers and duties of the small countries loomed largest. Even now the fate of Serbia, of Holland and*Belgium, of Armenia, of Ireland, rouse more passion and debate than the fate of the greater lands drawn into the conflict by the problem of the destiny of the small ones. “Self-determination of all nationalities” was written into the principles of diplomacy by the Russian revolution. This pungent phrase has been enlarged upon by President Wilson in his various speeches and papers, until one would think that the whole war arose out of a desperate determination on the part of all the Great Powers to protect their smaller brethren against all comers. -

Joseph Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Department of Communication University of Washington ABSTRACT Using Female Empowerment as a Cover Story for Whiteness and Racial Hierarchy in Pop Culture: Interrogating the Intersections of Racial Appropriation and Feminist Discourse in the Performances of Fergie, Gwen Stefani, and Lady Gaga Rebecca Lynne Clark Mane Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Associate Professor Christine Harold Department of Communication This project contends that the pop cultural production of the subject of third wave feminism — an empowered sexy yet tough, glamorous yet powerful woman — is deeply entangled in racial symbolisms that ultimately re-assert whiteness and maintain racial inequity. Investigating the songs, videos, and public performances of three contemporary white female pop stars — Fergie, Gwen Stefani, and Lady Gaga — This analysis unpack the ways that racial symbolisms, sublimated cultural memories, and repudiated racial narratives circulate in these stars’ music, lyrics, and video narratives as well as visual indicators such as fashion, hair, make-up, and posture. Because these performances represent and promote female empowerment in ways contested, yet consistent, with third wave rhetoric, some feminist critics tend to dismiss the racial dynamics as incidental or include them only in apologetic footnotes. -

The United States in the 1950s experienced a reconfiguration of gender roles facilitated by depictions, in Hollywood film and magazine advertisements, of fashionable bodies that would mobilize the corporeal and ideological reconfiguration of emulating viewers. Chapter 2 “Apartment for Peggy: Probing the Postwar Prototype” examines the ways in which the post-World War II battle between the United States and Russia for global dominance gave rise to the glorification of domesticity and to the growth of infrastructures and institutions that supported it. Chapter 3 “Underwear and the Red Scare” examines the way in which film and advertising implicitly posited foundation garments as items of apparel that distinguished the American female from her Russian counterpart; secured her immovably as the faithful, housebound wife; and inscribed her body with national anxieties over communist invasion.
