Following the critical and financial success of James Mangold’s Logan (2017) – this dark and nostal- gic ‘farewell’ to the beloved X-Men franchise’s actors and characters like Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) and Patrick Stewart (Professor X) that was able to receive the historic, first Oscar nomination in a ‘serious’ category for adapted screenplay (while recent superhero films were almost excluisvely recognised in the ‘techni- cal’ categories with David Ayer’s Suicide Squad actually winning the prize for best makeup and hairstyling at the 2017 ceremony) – in 2018 Black Panther (dir. R. Coogler) was defined by some of the critics as a cultural phenomenon (mostly in the United States for its unprecedented focus on a black superhero character and moving the film’s narrative towards Afro-American culture and tradition as well as becoming the first ever superhero film to be nominated as a Best Picture of The Year in the 2019 American Film Academy Awards. Howard The Duck is one of the strangest comic book characters ever published by Marvel Comics, best known today because of its movie adaptation, believed by many to be one of the worst films ever made; this is unfortunate, as the comic was both funny and full of social criticism, and was one of Marvel's best known titles during the 1970s. While not an underground comic in of itself, Howard the Duck is widely cited as an example of the underground comix movement's influence on mainstream media. The character was apparently created as a sight gag; in "Adventure into Fear " #19 (December, 1973), in a Man-Thing story involving the "Nexus of All Realities" characters from several universes appeared, many of them being obvious homages to fictional characters such as Conan the Barbarian and (in Howard's case) Donald Duck. However, writer Steve Gerber, known for both his love of strange characters and playing with readers' expectations, decided to continue using Howard, and convinced Marvel to give the character his own series. Although Marvel had to strike a deal with Disney in order to use the character, including such things as requiring Howard to wear pants , the character proved popular, most likely due to Gerber's writing. Gerber had the "duck" accidentally transported to Cleveland, where the "hairless apes" (as Howard always refers to them) refused to believe he was anything but a midget in a duck costume and treated him as a weirdo.

    Fafnir – Nordic Journal of Science Fiction and Fantasy Research journal.finfar.org Golems in the New World Matt Reingold Abstract: This essay considers the ways that the legend of the Jewish Golem has been used in two recent graphic novels. The original legends of the Golem presented him as a creature that would protect the Jews of Prague against anti- Semitism and persecution in the 16th century, while leaving open the possibility that he could return again in the future. Both James Sturm’s The Golem’s Mighty Swing and Jorge Zentner and Rubén Pellejero’s The Silence of Malka make use of many of the original tropes of the Golem narrative, but by making significant changes to the story including location, time period, and even what a Golem is, the texts offer new ways of understanding the Golem legend. These narratives suggest that despite immense progress for global Jewry since the 16th century, a Golem – albeit a new one – is still needed to protect Jews, sometimes even from themselves. Continuity as Adaptation in the Superman Multimedia Franchise Jack Peterson Teiwes ORCID identifier 0000-0001-8956-1602 Doctor of Philosophy November 2015 School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the PhD degree Produced on archival quality paper Abstract Since first appearing as a comic book character over three quarters of a century ago, Superman was not only the first superhero, spawning an entire genre of imitators, but also quickly became one of the most widely disseminated multi-media entertainment franchises. This achieved a degree of intergenerational cultural dissemination that far surpasses his comic book fandom. Yet despite an unprecedented degree of adaptation into other media from radio, newspaper strips, film serials, animation, feature films, video games and television, Superman’s ongoing comic books have remained in unbroken publication, developing a long and complex history of narrative renewal and reinvention. This thesis investigates the multifaceted intertextuality between the comic book portrayals of Superman and its many adaptations over the years, including how such retellings in other media have a generally stronger cultural impact, which exerts in turn an adaptive influence upon these continuing comics’ internalised narrative continuity. I shall argue that Superman comics, as a case study for the wider phenomenon in the superhero genre, demonstrate via their frequent revisions and relaunches of continuity, a process of deeply palimpsestuous self-adaptation. The Introduction positions my research methodology in relation to intertextual theory, with an emphasis on providing terminological clarity, while Chapter 1 expands into a literature review on pertinent key scholarship on adaptation studies and the comics studies field specifically.

DeMATTEIS è legato indissolubilmente alle gestioni ragnesche degli anni ʿ90 grazie ai cicli di storie in coppia con Sal Buscema e Mark Bagley, cui si annoverano i capolavori "The Child Within ", "Best Of Enemies " e "The Gift ". Scrivendo di un Peter Parker più adulto e massiccio come mai sino ad allora, l'autore si era aggiudicato qualche anno prima il successo grazie alla tragica saga "Kraven's Last Hunt " mentre, poco dopo, sarà la volta della miniserie "The Lost Years ". Sul fronte editoriale opposto si trovano lavori più divertenti ed ironici quali la Justice League International, scritta nella seconda metà degli anni ʿ80 insieme al fidato Keith Giffen, che ha valso alla coppia la nomination per l'Eisner Award come miglior albo singolo grazie al primo numero della loro gestione. Sempre per le più note case editrici americane di fumetti si ricordano gli indelebili cicli di Captain America e The Defenders per la Marvel ed i personaggi mistici della DC quali The Spectre, Dr. Fate, The Phantom Stranger e la Justice League Dark. Brevi incursioni si sono comunque avute anche in personaggi più classici come Batman e Superman. Per le case editrici minori citiamo la sfortunata Abadazad, The Stardust Kid, Hero Squared e The Life And Times Of Savior 28. Difficile poi dimenticare i progetti più personali dell'autore come l'evocativo Moonshadow, Blood: A Tale, Mercy, Seekers Into The Mystery e l'autobiografico Brooklyn Dreams.

Das Event hat ein Erfolg zu werden: Es muss Aufmerksamkeit an sich binden, ver- bindlich sein sowie Abhängigkeiten zwischen den Serien etablieren und ver- tiefen. Auch die Shared Universes der aktuellen Verfilmungen bei DC und Marvel sind im Grunde nichts anderes als permanente Crossover-Erzählungen, denn ohne Querbezüge und Verlinkungen sind die zahllosen Superhelden-Franchisen und -Serien gar nicht mehr denkbar. Sieht man aber einmal genauer hin, dann wir- ken Crossovers doch sehr oft wie die Quadratur des Kreises, Zu viele Köpfe, die in zu viele Richtungen wollen, und spätestens beim nächsten Reboot fällt sowieso alles in sich zusammen.
