If I had the choice I would go with three and a half stars, because it was pretty good, but I didn't get that 'wowza' feeling about it. Re-read to fill in any Daredevil: Guardian Devil I need Daredevil: Guardian Devil know before diving into Parts of a Hole David Mack's follow-on that was only published as a GN this year. Realise now that, aside from the adoration I had for Kevin Smith in his Daredevil: Guardian Devil, this isn't nearly as special a run of DD as I'd thought ten years ago. It was an interesting story but seemed like a big letdown with the "supervillain explains his nefarious plot in excruciating detail, just before getting his ass handed over by the hero". And the art? Queseda seems to be doing a great run as Executive Editor, but I'm not convinced on his artwork. A combination of horror movie fright and grade-school flat. Punisher Daredevil, Vol. 1: Guardian Devil by Kevin Smith It features the hero suddenly caring for an infant that may be either the Messiah or the Antichrist. The graphic novel combining the eight issues into one collection features an introduction by Ben Affleckwho portrayed Daredevil in the feature film adaptation in which Kevin Smith had a supporting role. The story features strong Catholic themes, which came from writer Smith's own experiences. Daredevil's love interest, Karen Pagebreaks up with him because she is confused about her feelings for him. Angry and heartbroken, Daredevil falls back on his Catholic faith for support. A year-old girl who knows of his secret identity leaves her baby with Daredevil, claiming that the baby was born without her ever having sex. As he tries to discover more about the child's origins, he is contacted by a man called Nicholas Macabes, who claims that the child is actually the Antichristleaving Daredevil a Daredevil: Guardian Devil crucifix. Karen visits Daredevil: Guardian Devil and reveals that she has HIV from her time as a porn star. His partner Foggy Nelson is accused of murdering a wealthy divorcee with whom he was having an affair, after she seemingly turned into Daredevil: Guardian Devil demon. Rosalynd Sharpe who is both their boss and Foggy's mother fires Foggy to avoid having his arrest affect the financial future of their law firm. Daredevil quits the firm in disgust. Daredevil Daredevil: Guardian Devil for assistance from Black Daredevil: Guardian Devilbut then attacks Daredevil: Guardian Devil, apparently convinced that Macabes Daredevil: Guardian Devil telling the truth about the child. Daredevil throws the baby off of the roof prompting Black Widow to leap off herself, saving the child. Daredevil speaks with Karen. She has been contacted by Macabes, who claims that the child is responsible for her HIV. Daredevil asks Doctor Strange for help. Strange tells Daredevil that the cross Macabes gave him was tainted with an undetectable drug which made him hostile whenever someone suggested that the child was innocent, revealing the cause of his attack on Black Widow. Strange is able to purge the drug from Daredevil's system. Summoning Mephisto for information, Daredevil and Strange learn that the church where Murdock left the baby is under attack. Daredevil arrives back just in time to confront Bullseyewho has murdered several nuns. Daredevil is unable to stop Bullseye from killing Karen and stealing the baby. After briefly contemplating suicideMatt tracks Macabes to his headquarters, fighting his way to the final stronghold, where Macabes reveals that he is actually the villain Mysterio. It is revealed that he was disappointed when he deduced from newspaper articles that the current Spider-Man was just a clone and saw no dignity in overpowering a 'copy' even though by then, the clone had been killed and the current Spider-Man was indeed the original. A year ago, Mysterio was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. He resolved to die after enacting his greatest scheme, turning his attention to Daredevil. Mysterio purchased information about Daredevil from the Kingpinand began to set up his scheme. He Daredevil: Guardian Devil artificial insemination Daredevil: Guardian Devil impregnate the girl, drugged Foggy, faked the demonic transformation and death of the divorcee, posed as Karen's doctor to fake the HIV diagnosis, and hired Bullseye to lure Daredevil to him for a final confrontation. Mysterio believed that Daredevil would kill him when he learned of his plot. Daredevil dismissed Mysterio as unoriginal, pointing out that the Kingpin had already attempted to drive him insane once before, and that Mysterio had previously attacked J. Jonah Jameson with fake supernatural occurrences. Despondent, Mysterio frees the baby, and then—noting that his last move was stolen from Kraven — shoots himself. After Karen's funeral, a conversation with Spider-Man leads Daredevil to realize that the infant Daredevil: Guardian Devil saved represented a positive outcome among the tragedy. His faith renewed, he names the baby after Karen Daredevil: Guardian Devil gives it up for adoption to a couple in New Jersey. He visits Black Widow and asks for Daredevil: Guardian Devil.

The Evolution of Modern Superhero Films Introduction Since 2017 the newly established cinematic meta-genre known as a comic book film – which is synonymous with a superhero movie with its dominant super-human characters – seems to gain more and more recognition as not only a profitable but also respectable line of modern cinema. Following the critical and financial success of James Mangold’s Logan (2017) – this dark and nostal- gic ‘farewell’ to the beloved X-Men franchise’s actors and characters like Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) and Patrick Stewart (Professor X) that was able to receive the historic, first Oscar nomination in a ‘serious’ category for adapted screenplay (while recent superhero films were almost excluisvely recognised in the ‘techni- cal’ categories with David Ayer’s Suicide Squad actually winning the prize for best makeup and hairstyling at the 2017 ceremony) – in 2018 Black Panther (dir. R. Coogler) was defined by some of the critics as a cultural phenomenon (mostly in the United States for its unprecedented focus on a black superhero character and moving the film’s narrative towards Afro-American culture and tradition as well as becoming the first ever superhero film to be nominated as a Best Picture of The Year in the 2019 American Film Academy Awards. Besides the final ver- dict of the Academy (which eventually appreciated Peter Farrelly’s Green Book) the 2019 ceremony still managed to highlight a milestone for superhero cinema 158 Cinema of Puzzles Tomasz Żaglewski by picking an animated feature – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – as the Best Animated Film (and according to many observers it was the Spider-Verse and not Black Panther that deserved a place amongst the Best Picture-nominees).

    Liebe Kulturfreund*innen, bereits seit Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs befasst sich das Amerikahaus München mit US- amerikanischer Kultur. Als US-amerikanische Behörde war es zunächst für seine Bibliothek und seinen Lesesaal bekannt. Doch schon bald wurde das Programm des Amerikahauses durch Konzerte, Filmvorführungen und Vorträge ergänzt. Im Jahr 1957 zog das Amerika- haus in sein heutiges charakteristisches Gebäude ein und ist dort, nach einer vierjährigen Generalsanierung, seit letztem Jahr wieder zu finden. 2014 gründete sich die Stiftung Bay- erisches Amerikahaus, deren Träger der Freistaat Bayern ist. Heute bietet das Amerikahaus der Münchner Gesellschaft und über die Stadt- und Landesgrenzen hinaus ein vielfältiges Programm zu Themen rund um die transatlantischen Beziehungen – die Vereinigten Staaten, Kanada und Lateinamerika- und dem Schwerpunkt Demokratie an. Unsere einladenden Aus- stellungräume geben uns die Möglichkeit, Werke herausragender Künstler*innen zu zeigen. Mit dem Comicfestival München verbindet das Amerikahaus eine langjährige Partnerschaft. Howard The Duck is one of the strangest comic book characters ever published by Marvel Comics, best known today because of its movie adaptation, believed by many to be one of the worst films ever made; this is unfortunate, as the comic was both funny and full of social criticism, and was one of Marvel's best known titles during the 1970s. While not an underground comic in of itself, Howard the Duck is widely cited as an example of the underground comix movement's influence on mainstream media. The character was apparently created as a sight gag; in "Adventure into Fear " #19 (December, 1973), in a Man-Thing story involving the "Nexus of All Realities" characters from several universes appeared, many of them being obvious homages to fictional characters such as Conan the Barbarian and (in Howard's case) Donald Duck. However, writer Steve Gerber, known for both his love of strange characters and playing with readers' expectations, decided to continue using Howard, and convinced Marvel to give the character his own series. Although Marvel had to strike a deal with Disney in order to use the character, including such things as requiring Howard to wear pants , the character proved popular, most likely due to Gerber's writing. Gerber had the "duck" accidentally transported to Cleveland, where the "hairless apes" (as Howard always refers to them) refused to believe he was anything but a midget in a duck costume and treated him as a weirdo.

    Fafnir – Nordic Journal of Science Fiction and Fantasy Research journal.finfar.org Golems in the New World Matt Reingold Abstract: This essay considers the ways that the legend of the Jewish Golem has been used in two recent graphic novels. The original legends of the Golem presented him as a creature that would protect the Jews of Prague against anti- Semitism and persecution in the 16th century, while leaving open the possibility that he could return again in the future. Both James Sturm’s The Golem’s Mighty Swing and Jorge Zentner and Rubén Pellejero’s The Silence of Malka make use of many of the original tropes of the Golem narrative, but by making significant changes to the story including location, time period, and even what a Golem is, the texts offer new ways of understanding the Golem legend. These narratives suggest that despite immense progress for global Jewry since the 16th century, a Golem – albeit a new one – is still needed to protect Jews, sometimes even from themselves. In his visit to the city, he found Golem hotels, Golem figurines and action figures, a musical about the Golem, and even Golem-themed restaurants serving non-kosher foods like the “crisis special”, a roast pork and potato dish. In her analysis of the renewed interest in Prague’s legendary creature, Eva Bergerova, director of the Golem play, sees in the Golem a “projection of society’s … fears and concerns.
