Wippel, Ph.D. This dissertation presents a comprehensive analysis of Thomas Aquinas’s theory of self-knowledge, examining each of the four kinds of self-knowledge he identifies: (1) actual perception of one’s existence (actual self-awareness); (2) habitual self-awareness; (3) apprehension of the soul’s nature; and (4) the judgment of this apprehension in light of divine truth. Broadly speaking, it contends that Thomas is attentive to experienced phenomena and provides precise and thoughtful analyses of phenomena such as bodily consciousness, implicit and explicit awareness of oneself as subject, unified perception of the self as a single subject, and scientific knowledge of the soul’s nature. Moreover, his explanation of self-knowledge is consistent with the principles of his general theory of knowledge, while it also takes into account the unique characteristics of an act of knowledge wherein the knower is the known, and integrates both Augustinian and Aristotelian principles. Thus Thomas’s comments on self-knowledge constitute a carefully nuanced doctrine with significant implications for both his theory of knowledge and his explanation of human subjectivity. The first chapter examines the doctrine of two of his main sources, Augustine and Aristotle, while placing special emphasis on the way that difficulties of interpretation of texts in both these thinkers helped shape Thomas’s own conception of self-knowledge. It then reviews chronologically his major texts on self-knowledge, while examining them for possible doctrinal developments and highlighting significant systematic problems for consideration in the thematic discussions of the following chapters. The second chapter analyzes in detail the first type of self-knowledge—the soul’s awareness of its individual existing self, focuses on the problem of its content and the mode in which it is achieved, and argues that according to at least one definition of “intuition,” Thomas is defending a theory of intuitive self-awareness. The third chapter investigates the second type of self-knowledge—the soul’s habitual self-awareness through its own presence to itself—and argues for the existence of a Thomistic account of implicit actual self-awareness. The fourth chapter examines the third and fourth kinds of self-knowledge and reviews F.-X. Putallaz’s argument that reditio completa constitutes a fifth type of self- knowledge. Lastly, the fifth chapter studies the implications of Thomas’s theory of self- knowledge for his view of human nature. It returns to the commentaries on the De anima and Liber de causis to argue that habitual self-knowledge is essential to immaterial being, and that Thomas’s discussion of habitual and actual implicit self-knowledge constitutes a psychological approach to the nature of human personhood which complements his much better-known metaphysical definition of personhood. Principles of knowledge, belief and conditional belief Guillaume Aucher 1 Introduction Elucidating the nature of the relationship between knowledge and belief is an old issue in epistemology dating back at least to Plato. Two approaches to addressing this problem stand out from the rest. The first consists in providing a definition of knowledge, in terms of belief, that would somehow pin down the essential ingredient binding knowledge to belief. The second consists in providing a complete characterization of this relationship in terms of logical principles relating these two notions. The accomplishement of either of these two objectives would certainly contribute to solving this problem. The success of the first approach is hindered by the so-called ‘Gettier problem’. Until recently, the view that knowledge could be defined in terms of belief as ‘justified true belief’ was endorsed by most philosophers.

John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin Poland PHILOSOPHICAL CREATIONISM: THOMAS AQUINAS’ METAPHYSICS OF CREATIO EX NIHILO In keeping with the prevalent philosophical tradition, all philoso- phers, beginning with the pre-Socratics, through Plato and Aristotle, and up to Thomas Aquinas, accepted as a certain that the world as a whole existed eternally. They supposed that only the shapes of particu- lar things underwent transformation. The foundation for the eternity of the world was the indestructible and eternal primal building material of the world, a material that existed in the form of primordial material elements (the Ionians), in the form of ideas (Plato), or in the form of matter, eternal motion, and the first heavens (Aristotle). It is not strange then that calling this view into question by Tho- mas Aquinas was a revolutionary move which became a turning point in the interpretation of reality as a whole. The revolutionary character of Thomas’ approach was expressed in his perception of the fact that the world was contingent. The truth that the world as a whole and eve- rything that exists in the world does not possess in itself the reason for its existence slowly began to sink into the consciousness of philoso- phers. Everything that is exists, as it were, on credit. Hence the world and particular things require for the explanation of their reason for be- ing the discovery of a more universal cause than is the cause of motion.     Transparency and the KK Principle Nilanjan Das (MIT) and Bernhard Salow (Trinity College Cambridge) Penultimate Draft – Please Cite Published Version Abstract An important question in epistemology is whether the KK principle is true, i.e., whether an agent who knows that p is also thereby in a position to know that she knows that p. We explain how a “transparency” account of self-knowledge, which maintains that we learn about our attitudes towards a proposition by reflecting not on ourselves but rather on that very proposition, supports an affirmative answer. In particular, we show that such an account allows us to reconcile a version of the KK principle with an “externalist” or “reliabilist” conception of knowledge commonly thought to make that principle particularly problematic. The KK principle states that someone who knows that p is in a position to know that she knows that p. In addition to an enviable pedigree of historical supporters,1 this thesis has considerable intuitive appeal. For, to put it roughly, if the KK principle is false, rational agents can be alienated from their own attitudes and actions in a counterintuitive manner. One way to bring this out is by noting that there seems something self-undermining or incoherent about someone who says (in thought or out loud) something of the form “while it is raining, I’m not willing to take a stance on whether I know that it is.” But if nothing in the vicinity of the KK principle is correct, this is hard to explain. For if there are counterexamples to KK, there are fully coherent agents who know p without being in a position to know that they know this.

    A Priori Skepticism and the KK Thesis James R. Beebe (University at Buffalo) International Journal for the Study of Skepticism (forthcoming) In Beebe (2011), I argued against the widespread reluctance of philosophers to treat skeptical challenges to our a priori knowledge of necessary truths with the same seriousness as skeptical challenges to our a posteriori knowledge of contingent truths. Vahid (2013) offers several reasons for thinking the unequal treatment of these two kinds of skepticism is justified, one of which is a priori skepticism’s seeming dependence upon the widely scorned KK thesis. In the present article, I defend a priori skepticism against Vahid’s criticisms. Keywords: Skepticism; a priori skepticism; second-order knowledge; KK thesis In a previous issue of this journal, Hamid Vahid (2013) offers a thorough examination of some recent non-standard approaches to philosophical skepticism (e.g., Beebe 2010; 2011; Kraft MS; Kung MS; Schaffer 2010). One non-standard form of skepticism, dubbed ‘a priori skepticism,’ challenges our ability to have a priori knowledge of necessary truths (cf. Beebe 2011). Against proponents of these approaches, Vahid argues that many non-standard skeptical challenges fail to raise any significant doubts concerning first-order knowledge claims—i.e., claims of the form ‘S knows that p,’ for some domain of propositions. Rather, Vahid maintains that these challenges at best contest our ability to have second-order knowledge—i.e., to know that we know the propositions in question. Because skepticism about second-order knowledge claims is seen as significantly less threatening to our overall view of ourselves as knowledgeable creatures, Vahid suggests that non-standard skepticism should be considered philosophically less interesting than its supporters maintain.

I explain how Augustine’s view that testimony is a source of knowledge (notitia) developed through four stages, and argue that on Augustine’s view testimonial belief is justified inferentially. I argue that Aquinas thinks some testimonial belief is justified inferentially, and some is justified by adhering to the speaker as the formal object of one’s belief, on the grounds that the speaker is truthful. I argue that these provide knowledge when they provide cognitio. The “proper passions” of substances – characteristics which serve to identify substances by type, but do not formally belong to the essence of a subject – are ontologically dependent on common natures according to kind. And Scotus operates on the assumption that it is the description of created subjects according to their common natures which is the most fundamental description of them. Thus, for Scotus, common natures and their relations determine what we might call the “structure” of reality. But not every “subject of a science” is a common nature. According to Scotus, “being,” the subject of “metaphysics,” does not have the same real unity as the natural groupings under the ten categories of Aristotle. As a consequence of this, the “transcendental passions of being” include predicates which do not possess the “real unity” of a common nature, because they are too abstract or generic to do so.

Copyright © 2001 Cambridge University Press 1057-0608 DOI: 10.1017.S1057060801010040 RICHARD RUF US’S DE ANIMA COMMENTA RY Richard Rufus’s De anima Commentary: The Earliest Known, Surviving, Western De anima Commentary REGA WOOD Stanford University Richard Rufus of Cornwall was educated as a philosopher at Paris where heREGA WOOD was a master of arts.1 In 1238, after lecturing on Aristotle’s libri naturales, Rufus became a Franciscan and moved to Oxford to study theology, becom- ing the Franciscan master of theology in about 1256 and probably dying not long after 1259.2 Rufus’s conversion to Franciscanism was marked by a desire to distance himself from Aristotle and other wordly philosophers. As a Franciscan, Rufus to some extent repudiated his own earlier views; occasionally he referred to them as the opinions of a “secular master.” In his later career, Rufus used the technical terminology of philosophy sparingly — preferring not to use phrases like ‘agent intellect’ or ‘intellectus adeptus’. And even before Rufus became a Franciscan, he gave an increasingly sympathetic hearing to non-Aristotelian and Platonic views, as is plain from his Contra Averroem (CAv).3 As a Franciscan, Rufus twice lectured on Peter Lombard’s Sentences, first at Oxford in about 1250 where he was the first bachelor of theology to lecture there on Lombard, and then at Paris.4 Rufus’s philosophical works are preserved at Erfurt, in two codices purchased by Amplonius de Berka in about 1400: Quarto 290 and Quarto The National Endowment for the Humanities has generously underwritten the publication Rufus’s De anima commentary.

Noone, PhD Intelligible species were enshrined in the cognitive theories of medieval thinkers as part of the narrative which explained the genesis of an act of understanding. However these thinkers did not all regard intelligible species in the same way. While some, like St. Thomas Aquinas, stressed the need for these species to serve as the means to an act of understanding, others such as Henry of Ghent rejected the need for them on those grounds. This historical setting serves as the backdrop of the dissertation which is a commentary of Aristotle’s De Anima which is attributed to Antonius Andreas; the commentary, we are told, was copied in the early part of the fall semester in 1448 at the University of Prague by the scribe who copied it, Hilary of Lithonicum. Antonius Andreas was a Franciscan friar from the Kingdom of Aragon who studied at the University of Paris at the same time that Blessed John Duns Scotus was teaching there. The influence of the Doctor Subtilis on Antonius is manifest primarily in his own commentary on Aristotle’s Metaphysics in which he espouses Scotus’s signature teaching on common nature and haecceitas.
