  • The Muppets in Movieland
Downloaded from: justpaste.it/muppetsinmovieland The Muppets in Movieland by JOHN CULHANE • NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE • JUN 1979 Last autumn, when Edgar Bergen died, and his voice and the voices of Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd were stilled forever, the great ventriloquist’s widow, Frances, and his daughter, Candice, asked Jim Henson and Kermit the Frog to say a few words at the funeral. “There seems to be something strange about having a puppet in this situation,” began tall, lean, 42-year-old Henson, the brown-bearded, gentle-voiced, ever-calm creator of The Muppets. “I’ve never appeared at a funeral before,” said the hand puppet frog on Henson’s hand. “But the family asked me if I would bring Kermit and…” “Charlie would have liked it,” Kermit interrupted Henson — and only then did it sink in for some that Charlie and Mortimer were gone, too. “I think of all these guys as part of puppetry,” Henson told the mourners. “The frog here — and Charlie and Mortimer — Punch and Judy — Kukla and Ollie. It’s interesting to not that there have been puppets as long as we had records of mankind. Some of the early puppets were used by witch doctors — or for religious purposes. In any case, puppets have often been connected with magic. “Certainly, Edgar Bergen’s work with Charlie and Mortimer was magic,” Henson said. “Magic in the real sense. Something happened when Edgar spoke through Charlie — things were said that couldn’t be said by ordinary people…We of the Muppets, as well as many others, are continuing in his footsteps.

  • Building American Puppetry on the Jim Henson Foundation
BUILDING AMERICAN PUPPETRY ON THE JIM HENSON FOUNDATION DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jennifer Kathleen Stoessner, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Examination Committee: Approved by Dr. Joy Reilly, Adviser Dr. Beth Kattelman Adviser Dr. Alan Woods Graduate Program in Theatre Copyright by Jennifer Kathleen Stoessner 2008 ABSTRACT Historically the United States, with the exception of ritual performances by indigenous Americans, did not have a distinct puppetry tradition, utilizing instead the imported techniques of its immigrant population. In the twentieth century, puppeteers began to explore puppetry’s capabilities, producing challenging and innovative theatrical work in a distinctly American style. Puppetry was given a stage as popular broadcasting content on the newly invented television. In this media environment, Jim Henson pioneered new techniques, becoming the most famous puppeteer in history. His success enabled him to serve his field as a spokesman and sponsor. In 1982, he established the Jim Henson Foundation, a non-profit organization to support puppetry artists. The Jim Henson Foundation is the only organization in the United States devoted to funding puppet theater and its mission reflects Jim Henson’s commitment to the community of artists who make American puppetry the vivid panorama it has become. Without the Foundation, puppetry in the United States would not be experiencing the explosion of creativity and exposure it currently enjoys. To present a picture of puppetry in the United States and Henson’s work, a brief history of puppetry in America as well as an in-depth scrutiny of Jim Henson’s career is provided.

  • MISSING GOLD in MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND Muppet Treasure Island
MISSING GOLD IN MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND Muppet Treasure Island. By Jerry Juhl, Jim Hart, and Kirk Thatcher. Dir. Brian Henson. Produced by Henson and Martin G. Baker. Jim Henson Produc- tions / Walt Disney, 1996. We all enjoy playing these characters in classical literature. And, of course, it's a very good story. (Kermit the Frog on the set of Muppet Treasure Island) Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island and successful movie versions in 1934, 1950, 1972, and 1990 have thrilled generations with Jim Hawkins' life- and-death pirate adventure. Unfortunately, Muppet Treasure Island alternately abandons and sanitizes Stevenson's classic. Having lost the novel's treasure map (namely, strong characters and highspirited adventure), the film runs aground on the shoals of cheap gags and superficial morality. One of the film's singing pirates would "like to get [his] hands on whoever wrote this script;" so too might Stevenson. Shot in Britain, the film's sets and scenery — the inn, the Hispaniola, the island — are spectacular. The opening song, combining human pirates with singing Muppet skulls, and the battle scenes, are fun. But musical theatre cliches and half-baked humour undermine the story's suspense and drama. Anachro- nisms, aimed mainly at adults, prove tiresome: Blind Pew is "visually chal- lenged;" Billy Bones has a Henry Kissinger book on diplomacy. The film answers the novel's literal embarrassment of riches with rats on water skis and the Swedish chef. Stuck as ship's figureheads, the Muppets' grumpy old men conclude: "It could be worse — we could be stuck in the audience." It didn't have to be this way.

  • Puppetry Research Guide
2012 1 The UNIMA Research Commission THE UNIMA DIRECTORY OF PUPPET THEATRE RESEARCHERS By Ida Hledíková PhD 2012 2 INTRODUCTION UNIMA Research Commission proposes you a new version of “Directory of Puppet Theatre Researchers”. Our version is in fact a continuation of work elaborated by our predecessors – members of previous Research Commissions of UNIMA. The first edition of the “Directory” was published in Warsaw in 1991. In this innovated version are published those researchers from the previous issues who answered us and it also presents the new names of researchers and theorist of puppet theatre from all over the world. This contemporary index is supplemented by new persons and includes 183 names. According to the bibliographies it is obvious, that most of them respond to our appeals. Not starred are entries of those individuals who were in personal contact with us or those the information on whom was sent by UNIMA National Centres. In an introduction of one of the previous editions the former President of Research Commission Edi Majaron wrote, that this way of publication seemed to be oldfashioned in the world of new communication technologies. On one hand he was right, but on the other hand, thanks to those “oldfashioned” Directories we could continue. In all these documents including this newest version from 2012 year are chronicled researchers and their works. When comparing the first (1991) and the last version (2012) of the Directory we can see how many people dedicated their research to writing on puppetry since then. The researchers and their works have become at the same time a part of puppetry, a part of its history.
