Key points  It is typical for transfer from primary to secondary schools in for children to go to wide range of schools.  You are fortunate in that you are not just allocated your nearest secondary; there is genuine choice.  The South independent day and grammar market is incredibly competitive. Don’t underestimate how much tutoring is done.  We will support all children in getting into their school of choice, the pathway is clear from Allfarthing.  There are ‘Specialist’ places in some secondary (more to come)  Across London applications, you can apply from outside Wandsworth  Try to find a safety net/banker-this will allow you approach it with less stress  Look at the distance on 31st August not offer day. This is normally the reality. https://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/media/5810/previous _years_admissions_for_wandsworth_secondary_schoo ls.pdf Staying at Primary school until Y6  Involved in mentoring, prefects, house captains and role- model to younger children  Enhanced sports, music and arts competitions as you get older and in Y5/6  You only leave primary school once, there is no absolute date for leaving secondary school due to exams.  When I arrived I said we needed staffing stability-this has now occurred with a mixture of new and experienced teachers. There have been no new teachers over the last two years.  It does affect the school if children leave before Y6- financially, emotionally and strategically. Secondary Schools in Wandsworth

6 FAQ  What is the right school for my child? Go and have a look yourself and make an informed decision-you do have a parental choice  When should I start looking? End of Y4/beginning of Y5. There are lots of secondary school open days coming up and then more again in September. Don’t leave it until Y6. The Wandsworth Test is in September. What state schools are in our catchment at the moment?  This can always change but at present it is (in distance order) (mixed), Ashcroft Academy (mixed) Burntwood Academy (Girls), Ark Putney (mixed)

Will the school support me?  Yes you can book a meeting with the Headteacher and/or discuss at parents evening or make an appointment with the class teacher. We can do mock interviews and give you the best advice, but it will be your decision. Oversubscription criteria that schools use Non Selective Places  Children in Public Care (or adopted from care)  Siblings (brothers or sisters on roll at time of application)  Distance (straight line from home to centre of school site)  Exceptional Medical/Social Needs (professionally supported)  Church Attendance (Church of & Catholic Schools)  Feeder primary schools (Bolingbroke Academy only) Banding (An equal spread of ability)  Children divided into 5 equal groups based on test scores - Ashcroft & Chestnut Grove Selective Places  General Ability (Highest test scores) – Burntwood, Graveney, & Ernest Bevin  Subject Aptitude (Tests in Art, Languages, Music, Technology) – Ashcroft, Chestnut Grove & St Cecilia’s.

9 Specialist Aptitude Places in Wandsworth Schools  Applications for specialist aptitude places Art & Design - 30 places at Modern Languages - 30 places at Chestnut Grove Academy Music - 15 places at St Cecilia’s School * Mr Moss (music lead) happy to support, email [email protected] Technology – 24 places at Ashcroft Technology College * most Allfarthing places are within catchment area for Ashcroft so don’t do the test  The specialist test arrangements for Wandsworth schools have changed for 2019 entry. 10 Wandsworth Test:

It is a slight ‘non event’ for most Allfarthing children. -Apart from if you want your child to try and get into Graveney through the Wandsworth test. You need a high achieving score and have to practice/be tutored. 25% of Graveney is taken from this test. -For other schools their actual in-take from within the band doesn’t actually differ that much. -However, all children have to do it. Wandsworth Year 6 Test Results  You will be notified of your child's test results in mid October. The notification will provide information about: - how the test scores are used by the schools - previous years' admissions selective places, and - ability bands at Wandsworth schools.  This will help you to assess whether your child may be eligible for a selective (ability) place at , or before making an application. It will also be a guide as to which ability band your child may be placed in if you apply for Ashcroft Technology Academy or Chestnut Grove Academy.  Each school has its own admission criteria. Schools may use the test scores in different ways when allocating places or may not use them at all.  A score that results in an offer of a place at one school will not necessary result in an offer at another. Other tests  Subject aptitude tests if you apply for specialist place  Selective schools in other boroughs have their own test

12 Key Features of the Pan-London Admissions Process  Single application form to the council in which you live  Apply for up to 6 schools in any borough  Rank the schools in the order you prefer them  Applications for schools in other boroughs are passed to other councils  Schools consider applications separately using their criteria  Schools tell the local council whether they can allocate a place  If a child can be allocated a place at more than one school, the council will offer whichever of these the parent listed highest  Information is exchanged between councils  School offered is whichever one the parent ranked highest of those able to make an offer  Single notification from ‘home’ council sent on 1 March

13 What to do next  Accept the place offered unless you have a definite place elsewhere  Your child will be placed on the waiting list for any schools which are a higher preference than the school offered  If a higher preference school becomes available later we will let you know  Your child’s position on the waiting list can move up or down  You can appeal if you are refused a place at a higher preference school  If none of the schools you applied for can offer a place on 1 March, we will offer a place at the nearest school with a vacancy. You can also make further applications. 14 Advice  Don’t put your children in for unrealistic test/ choices on your forms e.g. You know their Wandsworth test score , so if they haven’t got a high mark and you are not in catchment don’t put Graveney.  Understand the catchment areas and again don’t waste choices.  Don’t put them in for independent exams if the journey time/bursary/gender of the school doesn’t suit. Your children don’t need the added stress. Equally don’t apply for too many. 3 or 4 is the absolute most.  Accept the option you are given. You can then explore waiting lists-they DO move-Bolingbroke, St Cecilia’s, etc. There are other options outside the borough for state, not guaranteed entry:  Ricards Lodge in Merton  Fulham Boys  Faith schools e.g. Lady Margaret, The Oratory  There may be schools in other neighbouring boroughs that you may eventually get offered a place.  There are a range of independent options-it is probably worth a conversation with Mr Holmes to discuss various options Ask questions of the school if your child didn’t get in- they should answer them. If it is catchment related there is not a lot of further progress- other reasons there might be some dialogue to have. If you are thinking of independent you should still complete the Wandsworth secondary application. When looking at catchment areas look at 31st August not offer day 1st March. Some catchments can double. Look at patterns over years to fully understand. If you are looking at Grammar or want more practice Wallington do tests in Y5 May/June.
