Dystopian RevolutionBy MikeI enjoyed this dystopian novel. Fans of dystopian novels, such as George Orwell's 1984, and ardent Frank Herbert fans will probably enjoy this novel. Those looking for a new Frank Herbert sci-fi novel, similar to Dune or The Dosadi Experiment, might want to think twice before getting this book.Setting is the near future where the world has become dominated by opinion polls and those who control the polls. In theory, those who rule are freely elected but in practice control has accumulated into the hand of a few families and their governmental bureaus. Frank Herbert goes onto explore how societies and governments have cycles and are destined to fail and how the actions of individuals and societies can be predicted scientifically. Daniel Movius has rose rapidly in the system which purportedly allows all to succeed but he falls even more rapidly as a result of political machinations. Daniel then goes on to join the separatist movement and turbocharge their languishing revolution. Overall, this is a good story which is filled with suspense, intrigue and action.I would be interested to know when this novella was written in relation to some of Frank Herbert's other novels - unfortunately I could not find this information. My interest is due to the several themes which are similar to those in Dune, Whipping Star and the Dosadi Experiment and understanding how this novella may have influenced those if it was written first. High Opp also focuses on the fall of a society due to natural cycles similar to Dune. High Opp focuses on how governments and societies can fall similar to Dune, Whipping Star and The Dosadi Experiment. High Opp has a charismatic leader and explores the dangers and allures of such leaders - similar to aforementioned novels. High Opp also explores government and leadership similarly to referenced novel. One of the orgranizations in the novel operated similarly to BuSab (Bureau of Sabotage) in Whipping Star and The Dosadi Experiment. These theme similarities increased my enjoyment of this novel since they reminded me of some of my favorite Frank Herbert novels without ever feeling like I was reading a rewrite of those novels. No significant editing issues were noted. High Opp is 3,012 Kindle locations long. Standard length "paperback" novels seem to run in the 4,500 to 7,000 plus Kindle location range. Long novels can range from 15,000 to 20,000 plus Kindle locations.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This novel is a sketch preparing for "The Dosadi Experiment"By RTODD HARTLEHigh-opp is an excellent Frank Herbert novel, with all the cleverness and political depth that is expected. However, it is rather obvious that the ideas shown in High-Opp are being tested and considered in a narrower sketch before he fully integrated them into his final Jorj X. McKie novel: "The Dosadi Experiment", which was one of his masterpieces (in my opinion). I can only regret that Herbert didn't write a whole series of Jorj X. McKie novels rather than Dosadi, "The Whipping Star" and the original short story, "The Tactful Saboteur" found in "The Worlds of Frank Herbert". If you are trying to round out your collection of Herbert, I would recommend High-Opp, but if you are looking for his highlights, I would search out the Jorj X. McKie stories and give High-Opp a miss.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A preliminary sketch?By Gordon DaytonA sketch with the same plot as the Dosadi Experiment by the same author - possibly a preliminary work. The Dosadi Experiment and Whipping Star form companion works in the same universe with the same protagonist again by Frank Herbert. Both are much better written and more entertaining. Published posthumously, this dystopian novel was written between Frank Herbert's classics The Dragon in the Sea and Dune. EMASI! Each Man a Separate Individual! That is the rallying cry of the Seps, the resistance force engaged in a class war against the upper tiers of a society driven entirely by opinion polls. Those who score high, the High-Opps, are given plush apartments, comfortable jobs, every possible convenience. But those who happen to be low-opped live crowded in warrens, facing harsh lives and brutal conditions. Daniel Movius, ex-senior liaitor, rides high in the opinion polls - until he loses everything, brushed aside by a very powerful man. Low-opped and abandoned, Movius finds himself fighting for survival in the city's underworld. There, the opinion of the masses is clear: It is time for a revolution against the corrupt superprivileged - and every revolution needs a leader. It argues that reflection on technical legality reveals the mythic of modernity. The starting point for the argument is that the orthodox framing of technology by law – the ‘law and technology enterprise’ – does not comprehend its own speculative jurisdiction – that is, it fails to realise its oracle orientation towards imagining the future. In this science fiction as the modern West’s mythform, as the repository for projections of technological futures, is recognised as both the law and technology enterprise’s wellspring and cipher. What is offered in this thesis is a more thorough exploration of technical legality through taking science fiction seriously. This seriousness results in two implications for the understanding of technical legality. The first implication is that the anxieties and fantasies that animate the calling forth of law by technology become clearer.

  • Frank Herbert’S Dune Series Is Considered Oneof the Most Popular and Significant Contributions to Sciencefiction Writing in Many Decades
0-8057-7514-5 FONIK 7tae Frank Herbert’s Dune series is considered oneof the most popular and significant contributions to sciencefiction writing in many decades. After winning the prestigious Hugo and Nebula awards in 1966 for Dune, Herbert went on to write five successive volumes to form a series: Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune. Thefictional world that Herbert created was at once complex, compelling, andinstructive, and the series attracted readers of all ages. Herbert’s phenomenal achievements surpassed even that success—hepublished a total of thirty books in his literary career, twenty-three of which were science fiction novels. Some fans of his specu- late that his books spawned the ecological move- ment in the late sixties and early seventies. Despite the popularity of the Herbert books with general readers and in science fiction courses, the impact of his achievements has been, until now, inadequately assessed. William F. Touponce’s authoritative and de- finitive treatment draws on archival materials, including taped interviews in which Herbert talks extensively about his childhood, recordings of conversations with Herbert about his work, and reproductions of the earliest versions of certain passages that demonstrate the develop- ment of the Dune cycle. With comments from Willis E. McNelly, editor and compiler of The Dune Encyclopedia andlifelong friend of Herbert, incorporated into the text, Touponce summa- rizes a vast amount of material describing the creation of the Dune cycle. (continued on back flap) Frank Herbert examines what Touponceterms the “Dostoyevskian complexity” of Herbert’s characters, the “polyphonic” quality of the nov- els, and the evocative themes that permeate his works and reveal a profound questioning ofroles that heroes play in our discovery of human potential and limitations.

  • The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction
This page intentionally left blank The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction Science fiction is at the intersection of numerous fields. It is a literature which draws on popular culture, and which engages in speculation about science, history and all types of social relations. This volume brings together essays by scholars and practitioners of science fiction, which look at the genre from these different angles. After an introduction to the nature of science fiction, historical chapters trace science fiction from Thomas More to the present day, including a chapter on film and television. The second section introduces four important critical approaches to science fiction drawing their theoretical inspi- ration from Marxism, postmodernism, feminism and queer theory. The final and largest section of the book looks at various themes and sub-genres of science fiction. A number of well-known science fiction writers contribute to this volume, including Gwyneth Jones, Ken MacLeod, Brian Stableford, Andy Duncan, James Gunn, Joan Slonczewski and Damien Broderick.
