  • Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Sediment of the Louhajang River, Bangladesh
Research Article Published: 04 Apr, 2019 SF Journal of Environmental and Earth Science Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Sediment of the Louhajang River, Bangladesh Kormoker T1*, Proshad R2 and Islam MS2 1Department of Emergency Management, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali, Bangladesh 2Department of Soil Science, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali, Bangladesh Abstract Heavy metal pollution in sediment of the riverine ecosystem is regarded as a major problem in developing countries like Bangladesh. The present study was conducted to assess the contamination level of heavy metals and their ecological in sediments of the Louhajang River, Bangladesh. Certain indices, including the enrichment factor (EF), pollution load index (PLI), geoaccumulation index i (Igeo), and contamination factor (C f) were used to assess the ecological risk. The mean concentration of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, and Pb in sediments was 9.205, 7.676, 17.727, 8.999, 0.083, and 4.597 mg/ kg, respectively. Metals in sediment during winter were higher than summer season. Enrichment i factor (EF), contamination factor (C f), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), and pollution load index (PLI) revealed lower contamination of sediments by the studied heavy metals. The sum of toxic units at different sampling sites was less than 4, indicating a low toxicity of heavy metals in sediments of the study river. Considering the severity of potential ecological risk for single metal, the descending order of pollutants was As > Cu > Cd > Ni > Pb > Cr. In view of the potential ecological risk, sediments of Louhajang River showed low potential ecological risk. Keywords: Surface sediment; Heavy metal; Ecological risk; Bangladesh Introduction Contamination of heavy metals in the environment has attracted a wide concern due to the ever- increasing pollution of soil, sediment and water in many regions of the world, especially in some developing countries like Bangladesh [1-6].

Current Research in Environmental & Applied Mycology 5(3), 213–247, Doi 10.5943/cream/5/3/6 Abstract This paper includes the results of eco-taxonomic studies of coprophilous mushrooms in Punjab, India. The information is based on the survey to dung localities of the state during the various years from 2007-2011. A total number of 172 collections have been observed, growing as saprobes on dung of various domesticated and wild herbivorous animals in pastures, open areas, zoological parks, and on dung heaps along roadsides or along village ponds, etc. High coprophilous mushrooms’ diversity has been established and a number of rare and sensitive species recorded with the present study. The observed collections belong to 95 species spread over 20 genera and 07 families of the order Agaricales. The present paper discusses the distribution of these mushrooms in Punjab among different seasons, regions, habitats, and growing habits along with their economic utility, habitat management and conservation. This is the first attempt in which various dung localities of the state has been explored systematically to ascertain the diversity, seasonal availability, distribution and ecology of coprophilous mushrooms.

MycoKeys 60: 45–67. https://doi. org/10.3897/mycokeys.60.38186 Abstract Helvella species are ascomycetous macrofungi with saddle-shaped or cupulate apothecia. They are distri- buted worldwide and play an important ecological role as ectomycorrhizal symbionts. A recent multi-locus phylogenetic study of the genus suggested that the cupulate group of Helvella was in need of comprehen- sive revision. In this study, all the specimens of cupulate Helvella sensu lato with ribbed stipes deposited in HMAS were examined morphologically and molecularly.

Kummer and its acceptance as type species of Armillaria (Fr.:Fr.) Staude. Due to recognition of different type species over the years and an extremely variable generic concept, at least 274 species and varieties have been placed in Armillaria (or in Armillariella Karst., its obligate synonym). Only about forty species belong in the genus Armillaria sensu stricto, while the rest can be placed in forty-three other modem genera. This study is based on original descriptions in the literature, as well as studies of type specimens and generic and species concepts by other authors. This publication consists of an alphabetical listing of all epithets used in Armillaria or Armillariella, with their basionyms, currently accepted names, and other obligate and facultative synonyms.

The effects of forest management practices on a plantation of willow (Salix) and poplar (Populus) over Agaricomycetes basidiomes biodiversity were studied for one year in an island located in Paraná Delta, Argentina. Dry weight and number of basidiomes were measured. We found 28 species belonging to Agaricomycetes: 26 species of Agaricales, one species of Polyporales and one species of Russulales.

  • A Synopsis of the Saddle Fungi (Helvella: Ascomycota) in Europe – Species Delimitation, Taxonomy and Typification
Persoonia 39, 2017: 201–253 ISSN (Online) 1878-9080 www.ingentaconnect.com/content/nhn/pimj RESEARCH ARTICLE https://doi.org/10.3767/persoonia.2017.39.09 A synopsis of the saddle fungi (Helvella: Ascomycota) in Europe – species delimitation, taxonomy and typification I. Skrede1,*, T. Carlsen1, T. Schumacher1 Key words Abstract Helvella is a widespread, speciose genus of large apothecial ascomycetes (Pezizomycete: Pezizales) that are found in terrestrial biomes of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This study represents a beginning on molecular phylogeny assessing species limits and applying correct names for Helvella species based on type material and specimens in the Pezizales university herbaria (fungaria) of Copenhagen (C), Harvard (FH) and Oslo (O). We use morphology and phylogenetic systematics evidence from four loci – heat shock protein 90 (hsp), translation elongation factor alpha (tef), RNA polymerase II (rpb2) and the nuclear large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU) – to assess species boundaries in an expanded sample of Helvella specimens from Europe. We combine the morphological and phylogenetic information from 55 Helvella species from Europe with a small sample of Helvella species from other regions of the world. Little intraspecific variation was detected within the species using these molecular markers; hsp and rpb2 markers provided useful barcodes for species delimitation in this genus, while LSU provided more variable resolution among the pertinent species. We discuss typification issues and identify molecular characteristics for 55 European Helvella species, designate neo- and epitypes for 30 species, and describe seven Helvella species new to science, i.e., H. alpicola, H. alpina, H. carnosa, H. danica, H. nannfeldtii, H. pubescens and H.

  • Investigation of Water Quality from Bangshi River at Tangail in Bangladesh
Journal of Science and Technology, 6(1 & 2): 153-160, December 2016 INVESTIGATION OF WATER QUALITY FROM BANGSHI RIVER AT TANGAIL IN BANGLADESH MAUSUMI REHNUMA, MD. SIRAJUL ISLAM*, NOWARA TAMANNA MEGHLA and MD. HUMAYUN KABIR Department of Environmental Science and Resource Management, Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, Tangail-1902, Bangladesh Abstract The study was conducted to investigate the water quality parameters of the Bangshi River at Mirzapur upazila in Tangail district, Bangladesh during July 2015 to February 2016. The water samples were collected from three different stations indicated as St-1 (Mirzapur municipality), St-2 (Gorai) and St-3 (Ajgana), during dry and wet seasons to analyze water temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and alkalinity. The mean temperature, TDS, EC, DO, BOD, pH and alkalinity of the Bangshi River water were found 31.65 and 20.2°C, 102.0 and 484.5 ppm, 145.0 and 820.5 μS/cm, 4.20 and 2.35 ppm, 3.8 and 6.4 ppm, 7.74 and 8.12, and 109.0 and 293.9 ppm in dry and wet seasons, respectively. The study revealed that the water temperature was highest in the wet season and lowest in the dry season. During the dry season, the TDS was highest and gradually decreased to the wet season. The EC and pH was found within the standard limit over the both wet and dry season. The DO and BOD content were not suitable for fisheries whereas alkalinity was suitable for fisheries during dry and wet seasons.
