What better way to beat the heat of summer than with a rollicking, countrified musical set somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna on Highway 57? I have wanted to produce Pump Boys and Dinettes for a long time. I remember having a conversation about it with Sean Paxton, our music director, during the run of Always….Patsy Cline. We both agreed that it would be perfect for SMP. I think you’ll agree that we were right! Pump Boys isn’t produced very often – and only now do I appreciate why - it takes really good musicians! We are incredibly lucky that so many wonderfully talented ones showed up to make this show happen. I’m excited for you to hear them – you know half this cast from Patsy Cline – Sean, Kevin, Jim, and, of course, Cori (who was Ovation-nominated for her performance as Patsy) – and the newcomers – Mike, Jimmy, and Emily Kay. I’ve been watching them in rehearsals having a blast getting to know this music and each other. Now it’s your turn. I bet you’ll leave singing these terrific songs – and I hope you’ll come back for another helping! The cast has been led by Allison Bibicoff who directs at SMP for the first time. I’ve been looking for the right project to get her to work with us and I think we came up with the perfect show to introduce her to you! SMP is really only alive when our patrons are in the house. I love being here when there is a buzz of excitement before a show with our loyal friends milling in the lobby and finding their seats. I don’t think you will stay seated long though – this show will make you want to get up and dance – AND eat pie! Next up we are bringing back the amazing magician John Carney for a short run in August. Then I’ll direct The Gin Game by D.L. Coburn opening September 7. We’ll remount, with the same cast from last year, Jean Shepherd’s A Christmas Story for the holidays. Our Field Trip series play next year is E.B. White’s Stuart Little which we’ll stage for local schools in rep with another show for adults TBA. Always something to look forward to at SMP! Now it’s time to enjoy the pump boys and the diner waitresses who make them sing. I hope they remind you of some great road trips and good old diner food – tasty, filling, and oh-so satisfying. • Pump Boys and Dinettes Study Guide
Sacramento Theatre Company Study Guide The Pump Boys and Dinettes By Jim Wann, Mark Hardwick, Debra Monk, Cass Morgan, John Schimmel, and John Foley Study Guide Materials Compiled by Anna Miles 1 Sacramento Theatre Company Mission Statement The Sacramento Theatre Company (STC) strives to be the leader in integrating professional theatre with theatre arts education. STC produces engaging professional theatre, provides exceptional theatre training, and uses theatre as a tool for educational engagement. Our History The theatre was originally formed as the Sacramento Civic Repertory Theatre in 1942, an ad hoc troupe formed to entertain locally-stationed troops during World War II. On October 18, 1949, the Sacramento Civic Repertory Theatre acquired a space of its own with the opening of the Eaglet Theatre, named in honor of the Eagle, a Gold Rush-era theatre built largely of canvas that had stood on the city’s riverfront in the 1850s. The Eaglet Theatre eventually became the Main Stage of the not- for-profit Sacramento Theatre Company, which evolved from a community theatre to professional theatre company in the 1980s. Now producing shows in three performance spaces, it is the oldest theatre company in Sacramento. After five decades of use, the Main Stage was renovated as part of the H Street Theatre Complex Project. Features now include an expanded and modernized lobby and a Cabaret Stage for special performances. The facility also added expanded dressing rooms, laundry capabilities, and other equipment allowing the transformation of these performance spaces, used nine months of the year by STC, into backstage and administration places for three months each summer to be used by California Musical Theatre for Music Circus.
