Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps. Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2005 To Harold Ashenfelter and Amul Desai Preface A crowded, red double-decker bus pulls into the depot and comes to a rest amidst swirling dust and smoke. Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute. -

Cypress Ranch HS Choir Senior Wills 2021 Kristen Aviles I don't really know how to start this i feel like i've been writing me senior will since i found out these were a thing but now that i have to ive gone blank. This year has been strange, this isn't the senior year I had built up in my head but there's no way anyone could change our circumstances. We were dealt the cards and now we have to make the best of them. I told myself pretty early that I wouldn't let myself cry over my senior year, that so many people had it worse than me at the moment and the fact that I wouldn't get my last pop show was just a tiny spec of dust compared to what all was happening in the world. At the end of the day though as much as that is true it doesn't make it any less easy. The fact that I didn't get a normal pop show or winter concert, or even a choir olympics. The fact that my senior speech will have to be given on a zoom call, all of that stuff has slowly been chipping away at me this year. The only thing pulling me along is the thought that I traded this for a normal freshman year of college which has been strangely comforting this whole time. So no, this isn't the year i expected or wanted but it's what i got and there is nothing i could do to change that. -

This is an interesting self-assessment when you think about all he has achieved in his career. He is a former Disney executive who was instrumental in the production of one of Disney’s highest grossing live-action films, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. As president of National Geographic Films, Adam was responsible for acquiring the international rights to March of the Penguins, releasing the U.S. version which garnered much deserved critical and commercial acclaim. Adam, with his degree in Literature from Yale University, has made a career out of what he loves—movies. -

The Bag of Passports: on Mobility, National Identity, and Migration Abdullah Qureshi Aalto University, School of Art and Design and Architecture Biography Abdullah Qureshi is a Pakistani-born artist, educator, and cultural producer. Within his practice he is interested in using painting and collaborative method- ologies to address personal histories, traumatic pasts, and childhood memories. Based at Aalto University in Finland, his ongoing doctoral project, entitled Mythological Migrations: Imagining Queer Muslim Utopias, he examines for- mations of queer identity and resistance in Muslim migratory contexts. There was always the sense 49 Research in Art Education | 4 / 2019 that the world beyond was better – that somehow; I did not belong in my country of birth on a fundamental level. Much of this feeling of not belonging and seeing Pakistan as a lesser and backward space was the result of a combination of things. On a personal level, as an effeminate boy who was bullied a lot at school, I found solace in making art, reading books, and Western television – and perhaps, I was looking for escape. And, this desire to escape was further re-affirmed by the stories I would hear from family relatives who would travel, sharing their exciting adventures along with photographic and video evidence re-affirming that, indeed, life outside Pakistan had much more to offer. -

As one independent mixer of disco singles explained, “The numbers are growing so fast. Every day I get four or five invitations to grand openings of new clubs.” But even the rough estimates of disco scene observers are revealing: 2000 discos from coast to coast, 200 to 300 in New York alone – the uncrowned capital of dancing madness, where an estimated 200,000 dancers make the weekly club pilgrimage. And when disco people like a record, it can become a hit-regardless of radio play. Take Consumer Rapport’s “Ease On down The Road.” Released on tiny Wing and a Prayer Records, it sold more than 100,000 copies in New York in its first two weeks before it was picked up on the radio. Discos and what has come to be known as disco music have turned out to be, if not the Next Big Thing everyone in the music business was waiting for, then the closest thing to it in years. Discos have opened in old warehouses, steak restaurants, unused hotel ballrooms and singles bars... any place you could stick a ceiling full of flashing, colored lights, a mirrored ball, two turntables, a battery of speakers, a mixer and a DJ. In a recession economy, they’re a bargain both for the club owner – who has few expenses after his initial setup investment and an average $50-a-night salary to the DJ – and the patrons, who can dance nonstop all night for a fraction of the cost of a concert ticket. -

Introduction to 3rd strand Popular culture - between tradition and innovation Across three generations, mainly focussing on traditional and more recent British Bengali musical her- itage, from the 1970s-80s With the success of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical ‘Bombay Dreams’ and the ‘Bride and Prejudice’ (2006), Asian music is now firmly rooted in Britain and has broken out into a mainstream audience. Missy Elliot, Madonna, Britney Spears, Bjork to name a few have all used samples or have remixed their tracks with British Asian music. The rise of Asian music started in the 1970s by Biddu, Steve Coe and Sheila Chandra but it was in the late 80s that the British Asian youth first started to create a new musical genre by combining dance music with the music of their parent’s generation. The youth were growing up in an environment of racial violence and political struggle for self-identity while drawing strength from street culture and their Asian roots. They took pride in their music as they could claim it as their own - neither white nor music imported from the Indian sub-continent. The artists, who emerged from this period, became some of the greatest Asian artists Britain has seen. Some of these artists (ADF, Joi, State of Bengal and Osmani Soundz) are of Bengali origin and are the true pioneers of the Asian underground scene. At the same time there were a number of people (Alaur Rahman, Himangshu Goswami, Abdus Salique and Lucy Rahman) who were practising music from Bangladesh and managed to establish themselves over here. There is also a strong following in Baul music as most Bangladeshis who are here are from rural background.
