This review is to be welcomed as a means of ensuring that our systems to protect our children and young people are as effective as possible. This review is being conducted by an independent charity called SCIE (Social Care Institute for Excellence). As part of the review, SCIE would like to speak with any individuals who have had experience with any safeguarding issues within the Archdiocese, and have experience of working with our parish safeguarding representatives and the safeguarding team at the Archdiocese.     PRESS RELEASE Pope Francis appoints Bishop Robert Byrne as the 14th Bishop of Hexham & Newcastle The Holy See today announced that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Robert Byrne as Bishop of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle. Bishop Byrne succeeds The Right Reverend Séamus Cunningham, who has been Bishop of the Diocese since 2009. Bishop Byrne will be the fourteenth Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle. Bishop Byrne was born in Manchester on 22 September 1956. He was ordained priest in 1985 and Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Birmingham on 13 May, 2014. Speaking of his appointment, Bishop Byrne said: “I am deeply humbled by the trust Pope Francis has placed in me with this appointment as Bishop of Hexham & Newcastle, “I would like to thank the people and priests of the Archdiocese of Birmingham where I have served for the past five years and, in particular, Archbishop Bernard for his constant kindness and support. “I look forward to making my home in the North East, with its rich Christian heritage, and also getting to know and serve the people, deacons, religious and priests of the Diocese. I ask all of you to keep me in your prayers as I pray for you.” Bishop Cunningham said: “I am delighted to welcome Bishop Byrne as my successor at a time of great challenge and hope in this Diocese. The Lord Jesus is leading us along a road of rich discernment for the future of the Church and its mission. Every aspect of school life has been disrupted – not least those students who had been preparing for their GCSE’s or ‘A’ level exams. From a Catholic Life point of view we were unable to complete our usual liturgical and prayer services that we had planned for Lent in preparation for the great feast of Easter. However, through the modern technology that we now have we have been able to maintain our links to our families and friends, our school and our church. Praying together as a member of all these groups we belong to has been made possible by the live streaming of mass and other resources for prayer and reflection that have been made available to us. Communication between us can take many forms and I would like to share with you this uplifting blessing for us from those who cannot communicate verbally but use Makaton signing: https://youtu.be/va048-XxFTI As we approach the end of term CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) have produced a National Assembly for all children in our country. This evening offers us a wonderful opportunity to unite ourselves with Fr Robert in prayerful preparation for his Episcopal Ordination in St Chad’s Cathedral tomorrow. I am delighted that we do so here at the Birmingham Oratory, the community and parish that nurtured Fr Robert’s vocation in its earliest days and where he first made himself at home in the Archdiocese of Birmingham. Even more significant are the intrinsic and multi-faceted associations between this place and Blessed John Henry Newman, whose beatification by Pope Benedict in 2010 has brought so many blessings to our local Church. I have said to Fr Robert that we must now count his episcopal ministry among us as one of the gifts we have received through the intercession of Blessed John Henry, Cardinal Newman. It is also fitting tonight that we are united in prayer, before the Blessed Sacrament, with the Oratory Fathers from Birmingham and Oxford, where Fr Robert served for many years as Provost, as well as from Manchester, London and York. We see in tomorrow’s ordination a deepening appreciation for the charism of the Oratory as members of its various English houses increasingly play their part in the life of the Church at diocesan and national levels. With this in mind I thank the Provost of the Birmingham Oratory, Fr Ignatius, for inviting us here for this significant moment of prayer.

An especially warm welcome to His Eminence, Cardinal Vincent, whom we had the great pleasure of greeting here in his old home only six weeks ago, shortly after his return from Rome as Cardinal. Thank you, Your Eminence, for agreeing to preach during this Mass of Ordination. I welcome the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Mennini, as representative of the Holy Father among us – and I thank him and the staff of the Nunciature for all that they have done in helping to provide us with a new Auxiliary Bishop. Fr Robert’s parents, his uncle Fr John Rigby, his brother Philip and other members of his family are happily with us today and I thank them for their consistent support of his priestly ministry over the years and in his vocation as an Oratorian. May I also congratulate Fr John on his Diamond Jubilee of Ordination this year. I welcome our civic representatives and especially the Mayor and Mayoress of Solihull, Councillor and Mrs Tildesley. Fr Robert first came to our Archdioceses as a member of the Birmingham Oratory before becoming a founder member of the Oxford Oratory twenty-four years ago. Today I welcome the Apostolic Visitor of the Oratory, Fr Felix Selden, alongside the Procurator General, Fr Mario Aviles, the Provosts and Fathers from the English Oratories and worldwide.

He joined the Association in 2001 and became its Treasurer in 2005, in addition to maintaining our web site. These invaluable services were enhanced by his great musical gifts, as a cantor, chant teacher and director extraordinaire. The loss of Jeremy to his wife and young children is incalculable, and we extend our deepest sympathy to them. He will be missed in so many places: at St Mary of the Angels, Bayswater, London, where he was appointed Music Director in September 2013, after thirteen years in charge of the music at the Church of the Holy Ghost, Balham; in the professional vocal ensemble Schola Cantamus, which he directed; by countless schoolchildren of all ages whom he taught to sing Gregorian chant; at The Music Makers, where he published his own church music and that of his fellow-composers; at the Catholic Stage Guild, where he was Musical Director; in the Catholic press, to which he contributed many lively articles, and at the Catholic Writers’ Guild; and not least here in the Association, in which he was a generous, amusing, immensely talented and much loved colleague.

Archbishop Antonio Mennini Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain HINSLEY HALL, LEEDS, 5 MAY 2014 I am glad to be with you today as you begin this Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales. Indeed my presence this afternoon among you is a clear sign of the strong links of communion, both affective and effective, which exist between the Apostolic See and the Catholic Church that make its journey here in England and Wales. As always, I am very grateful for your fraternal invitation to attend this opening session and for the opportunity given to me to address you as a Bishops’ Conference, to convey first of all, the closeness and prayers of our dear Holy Father Pope Francis, as well as to encourage you in the not always easy task that has been entrusted to you, namely guiding the People of God with your teaching and with your personal testimony as well as announcing the “Gospel of Joy” in our society. Indeed, without entering the discussion generated by the recent words of the Prime Minister, Mr. David Cameron, when he called Britain a “Christian country”, it is clear that the British society, as in many other European countries and elsewhere, have been profoundly formed by Christian values; in the values of the Gospel which have marked the history and the culture of this country. However, at the same time, we cannot deny that the presence of the Church in the public sphere, the practice of people who define themselves as “Christian” as well as the influence of Christian values in society have declined considerably nowadays.
