Prof. of English About the College Government Arts College (Autonomous), Salem-636007 is situated in the heart of Salem city which lies in the north west of Tamil Nadu. It caters to the needs of people seeking higher education in Salem and in neighbouring districts. This oldest institution of the State was established in 1857 by Sir Alexander Arbuthnot as an Anglo Vernacular. The institute was elevated to Second Grade College in 1879. For 52 years from 1885 to 1937, this college functioned under the aegis of Salem Municipal Administration. It was one of the two likewise institutes all over India during that time. Re-accredited by NAAC with B++ level, it was accorded Autonomous status from the academic year 2007. At present, this college offers 19 UG and 16 PG courses and also 10 M.Phil and 8 Ph.D research programmes. About IQAC The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) is a part of the Institution's system and works towards realisation of the goals of quality enhancement and sustenance. The prime task of the IQAC is to develop a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic improvement in the overall performance of institutions. For this, during the post-accreditation period, it will channelize all efforts and measures of the institution towards promoting its holistic academic excellence. The work of the IQAC is the first step towards internalization and institutionalization of quality enhancement initiatives. Its success depends upon the sense of belongingness and initiates participation in all the constituents of the institution. It will not be yet another hierarchical structure or a record-keeping exercise in the institution. It will be a facilitative and participative voluntary system/unit/organ of the institution. It has the potential to become a vehicle for ushering in quality enhancement by working out planned interventionist strategies to remove deficiencies and enhance quality like the “Quality Circles” in industries. Education is essential for the progress of a human being .Higher education is the golden ticket for a healthy life. The rewards of higher education are infinite. Some of them include attractive employment opportunities & greater life satisfaction. Higher education broadens the horizon of knowledge & instils self-confidence in the individual. Besides refining character, it fosters self- reliance & enriches the learners enormously. Higher education also improves social cohesion, social mobility as well as political stability. Education, particularly Higher Education, is viewed as a panacea for all evils and a magic wand that will make a host of problems, including the gender disparities to disappear. Institutes of Higher Education, through their curriculum, are expected to provide knowledge, know-how, wisdom and character to the students. The creative zeal of the students must be encouraged by the authorities of Higher Education by providing suitable courses as there is variety among students on the basis of their aptitudes, creativity, abilities and cultures. The main aim of Higher Education should be to make a student fetch him/her a suitable job which is in accordance with their acquired knowledge and skills. More than all it should make him appreciate his own culture and make him a good citizen. If we do not look at the collapse of Higher Education closely, not only will we be leading to a new brain drain but a collapse of aspirations. Higher Education is in need of radical reforms. The main focus of Higher Education should be on enforcing higher standards of transparency, strengthening of the vocational and doctoral education conduits and professionalization of the Education sector through stronger Institutional responsibility that would help in working around the complexities. In the Higher Education process, there is a total lack of the concept of human development and nation building.

Patil Education Society, (Institution Deemed to be University), Kolhapur Abstract Background: During adolescence knowledge regarding puberty, reproduction, pregnancy and sexual health is very limited. The lack of knowledge and being sexually active during this phase increases the risk of or sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. Objectives: To assess the knowledge and attitude regarding sex education, to determine its association with demographic variables and also to assess the correlation between the knowledge and attitude regarding sex education among the adolescents of Kolhapur. Methodology: A total of 109 adolescent students from two randomly selected junior college were enrolled for this quantitative survey research. The students of any stream within the age group of 16-19 years and willing to participate were involved. Questionnaire was used to collect data regarding demographic data, knowledge and attitude regarding sex education. Answers given by participants were evaluated and analysed. Descriptive analysis was done in MS Excel(2016). Chi square test was used to assess the associations in R software (version 3.6.1). Results: Twenty-eight percent participants had adequate knowledge. Most participants either given incorrect answers (35%) or responded as they don’t know the answer (37%). Majority of participants held uncertain attitude (66%) Knowledge of the participants were significantly associated with education (P=4.11E-08), stream of education (P=1.54E-05) and their residential area (P=7.93E-06).

    IDENTITY ISSUES OF GIRLS FROM SINGLE-SEX CONVENT SCHOOLS IN INDIA Sneha Pandey Department of Integrated Studies in Education Faculty of Education McGill University, Montreal 2019 Thesis Supervisor Dr. Ratna Ghosh A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts (Education and Society) ©Sneha Pandey, 2019 ABSTRACT This research outlines the impact of a single-sex convent school in New Delhi on the self- perception, social behavior, and sexual identity of young women in India. This analysis has been conducted within the context of the intersections of Indian patriarchy and the centuries long subjugation of Indian women’s identities with the Christian missionary, colonial legacy of convent schools. I argue that the combination of these two contexts creates a negative impact on young girls and that although the Convent presents itself as an empowering institute, in practice it is only perpetuating and reinforcing the socio-cultural ideologies that subjugate Indian women. I further argue that the “empowerment” that the Convent claims to be equipping young women with is superficial, in that it seeks to provide women with a degree for economic advantage without preparing them to challenge and transform the larger social customs and beliefs pervasive in Indian society. This study was conducted through an analysis of the school’s expressed goals and policies and their rules for young women through the lens of Critical Discourse Analysis. This was supplemented with an analysis of interviews conducted with eight former students of the Convent. The interviews were conducted and analyzed according to the principles of Narrative Feminist Research.

Political Science, Raja Rammohun Roy Mahavidyalaya Hooghly, West Bengal Abstract One of the most controversial issues that the Indian society is facing over last few decades is the question of “Sex Education”. Huge controversies have been seen between those who advocate it and those who oppose it. Recently, the controversy regained a momentum when the Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said, “the so-called sex education should be banned in schools.” After huge criticisms from parents, academicians and common citizens on social media forced the Health Minister to give a clarification of his comment and he clarified that he was only against the vulgarization of the sex education as a subject. It is needless to say that the contemporary world is circumscribed under „www‟, i.e. World Wide Web where free low of information and knowledge is most common. So, it is very important to have proper information about every thing that is related to an individual and society. Since sexuality is a fundamental or basic instinct of any animal it is important to have [proper knowledge on it. Like other biological activities, sexuality is nothing but inalienable activity of human civilization. Though many developed countries of the West have recognized the importance of sex education many developing countries like India is still suffering from social taboos and mental constraints to identify the enormous significance of sex education in society.

Dalmia Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India ABSTRACT Sex education has always been a controversial topic in India and it has remained one of the most debated topics over the decades. Introducing a curriculum focusing on reproductive system, sexual interaction and other facets of human sexual behaviour and educating the children, seems to be one of the most desirable ways to handle teenage pregnancies, a phenomenon still exits. Also, there is considerable evidences of child abuses and increasing risk of HIV infection among youth. Taboos and stigma have created hurdles for initiating sex education in educational institutes in India. Some of the significant factors could be cultural resistances, wherein people believe that imparting sex education is against the Indian culture and against morality. Also sex in itself is considered to be a taboo and conversations on it are generally shushed and not encouraged in conservative families. Some groups are of opinion that teaching children about sexuality and sexual behaviour would otherwise authorize it and would be considered as an inducing factor for engaging in sexual activities by the children at a young age. In recent times, sex education has received mixed views from different sections of the society. However, it is assumed that the perception of parents would matter the most for bringing any strategic change in the domain.

The social and political orthodoxy on several levels has make it difficult for the state machinery to actively impart sex education to adolescents. However, educating the teenage demographic on reproductive health has strong links with promoting awareness about sexual well-being and gender violence. The paper begins with the history of sexual health education in relation to state policies. Subsequently, it makes a case for the possibilities it provides in increasing health standards across multiple demographics and simultaneously spreading awareness about larger issues of gender violence and disparity. The next section surveys prevailing government policies on sex education, its presence, priorities and its blind spots. Then, the paper reviews the work of the NGO sector in broadening access to reproductive health education and their areas of specialisation. Finally, the paper contains policy recommendations regarding the proper formulation and implementation of sex education in India for adolescents and low income households in rural regions.
