1 The Complexities of Sex Education in Utah Grace Sponaugle Occidental College, Urban & Environmental Policy Professor Cha, Professor Matsuoka, & Professor Shamasunder April 8, 2019 Sponaugle 2 Abstract Utah has a state-wide policy of abstinence education. Abstinence education programs have been proven to be ineffective at delaying the initiation of sex and changing sexual risk behaviors (Santelli et al., 2017), correlating with high rates of teen pregnancies and STIs ((Stanger-Hall & Hall, 2011)(McCammon, 2017)). Limiting the standards by which sex education programs are deemed “effective” to disease and pregnancy prevention, neglects the holistic view of sexual health as defined by the CDC. Therefore, in an attempt to understand the broader implications that sex education has had on youth in Utah, this study examined, through a survey and interviews, the social, cultural, and educational influences that youth in Utah attributed to their sex education. Additionally, this study analyzed how these influences have played a role in the youth’s self perception of their sexual knowledge and sexual health. This research revealed that abstinence education is inherently limited, calling for Utah to expand its sex education framework beyond abstinence education and embrace a comprehensive model for sex education. Perceptions of a School-Based Sexuality Education Curriculum: Findings from Focus Groups with Parents and Teens in a Southern State S. Alexandra Marshall, Heather K. Hudson, and Lorraine V. Stigar Abstract School-based sexuality education is widely supported by most Americans. However, there is debate over the topics that should be taught. Also, a better understanding of desires adolescents and parents have for equipping youth to make healthy decisions is needed. This study gathered perceptions from parents and students about the sexuality education curriculum being implemented in selected, priority high schools in Arkansas. Separate parent and student focus groups were conducted at four of the fifteen priority high schools with high rates of sexually transmitted infection (STI) and teen pregnancy. Common themes included: 1) sex education should be comprehensive and is currently inadequate; 2) characteristics valued in friendships are not currently reinforced in schools leaving a disconnect for students when it comes to healthy romantic relationships; 3) students feel ill-equipped to pursue healthy dating relationships and lack realistic role models for healthy dating relationships; and 4) many teens are believed to be in abusive dating relationships. A comprehensive sexuality education curriculum is recommended to better address all relationship types and equip students to make healthy decisions in the context of their relationships. *S. Patil Education Society, (Institution Deemed to be University), Kolhapur Abstract Background: During adolescence knowledge regarding puberty, reproduction, pregnancy and sexual health is very limited. The lack of knowledge and being sexually active during this phase increases the risk of or sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. Objectives: To assess the knowledge and attitude regarding sex education, to determine its association with demographic variables and also to assess the correlation between the knowledge and attitude regarding sex education among the adolescents of Kolhapur. Methodology: A total of 109 adolescent students from two randomly selected junior college were enrolled for this quantitative survey research. The students of any stream within the age group of 16-19 years and willing to participate were involved. Questionnaire was used to collect data regarding demographic data, knowledge and attitude regarding sex education. Answers given by participants were evaluated and analysed. Descriptive analysis was done in MS Excel(2016). Chi square test was used to assess the associations in R software (version 3.6.1). Results: Twenty-eight percent participants had adequate knowledge. Most participants either given incorrect answers (35%) or responded as they don’t know the answer (37%). Majority of participants held uncertain attitude (66%) Knowledge of the participants were significantly associated with education (P=4.11E-08), stream of education (P=1.54E-05) and their residential area (P=7.93E-06). -

This analysis has been conducted within the context of the intersections of Indian patriarchy and the centuries long subjugation of Indian women’s identities with the Christian missionary, colonial legacy of convent schools. I argue that the combination of these two contexts creates a negative impact on young girls and that although the Convent presents itself as an empowering institute, in practice it is only perpetuating and reinforcing the socio-cultural ideologies that subjugate Indian women. I further argue that the “empowerment” that the Convent claims to be equipping young women with is superficial, in that it seeks to provide women with a degree for economic advantage without preparing them to challenge and transform the larger social customs and beliefs pervasive in Indian society. This study was conducted through an analysis of the school’s expressed goals and policies and their rules for young women through the lens of Critical Discourse Analysis. This was supplemented with an analysis of interviews conducted with eight former students of the Convent. The interviews were conducted and analyzed according to the principles of Narrative Feminist Research. -

Using social constructionism and poststructuralism, this study addresses the research questions: How did Bangladeshi young men receive sex education during adolescence? How did they interpret their experiences? How did their narratives reproduce and/or disrupt dominant discourses related to sex education, including discourses around sexuality, teenagerhood, masculinity, and manhood? Comprehensive Sex Education: CMSD – Safer Choices Wellness Schools – FLASH & Draw the Line Final Evaluation (August – January): School Year 2014-2015 1 Purpose The primary goal of school-based sexual health education is to help young people build a foundation as they mature into sexually healthy adults. School-based sexual health education is designed to complement and augment the sexual education children receive from their families, religious and community groups, and health care professionals. Sexual health education should assist young people in understanding a positive view of sexuality, provide them with information and skills for taking care of their sexual health, and help them make sound decisions now and in the future. Comprehensive sexuality education programs promote abstinence as the most effective way to prevent teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STI) while also teaching accurate and age- appropriate information on healthy relationships, contraception, and STI’s. Providing this information to adolescents allows them to make responsible decisions about sexual activity. Numerous studies and evaluations published in peer-reviewed literature have found that comprehensive sexual health programs that teach teens about both abstinence and contraception/disease prevention are effective strategies to help young people delay their initiation of sexual intercourse. Reviews of published evaluations of comprehensive sexual health education have shown a positive impact on the behaviors of adolescents, including: An increase in the use of contraception A decrease in the onset of sexual activity A decrease in the number of sexual partners A decrease in the frequency of sexual activity Findings The comprehension sexual education program was conducted in the Cleveland Municipal School District (CMSD) using the Safer Choices curriculum and Wellness Schools using F.L.A.S.H. -

The World Health Organization also reported that a third of all new HIV infections around the world are estimated to occur among youths (aged 15–25). and teen pregnancy rates are on the rise in many places. These worrying trends suggest that existing sexuality education programs and interventions may be inadequate and/or ineffective. Although the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development’s (ICPD) Programme of Action highlighted the roles of Governments to offer sex education to young people to promote teenage reproductive health, yet inconsistency exists in the related initiatives in the global context. The present article aims to provide a comprehensive literature review of the existing sexuality programs in selected places in both English-speaking (i.e., the United States of America, the United Kingdom) and Chinese-speaking contexts (i.e., Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan). Based on the review, observations and implications for sexuality education policy and practice, as well as recommendations for future research for youths are outlined. -
