Verbs Followed by Gerunds & Infinitives In English, if you want to follow a verb with another action, you must use a gerund or infinitive. EXAMPLE: We resumed talking. (gerund – verb + ing) I want to see a movie. (infinitive – to + base verb) There are certain verbs that can only be followed by one or the other, and these verbs must be memorized. Scholars agree that, in general, an animate possessor predicts the s- genitive while an inanimate possessor predicts the of-construction. However, the current literature rarely discusses noun compounds, such as the table leg, which also express possessive relationships. However, pragmatically and syntactically, a compound cannot be considered as a true possessive construction. Thus, this paper will examine why some compounds still display possessive semantics epiphenomenally. The noun compounds that imply possession seem to exhibit relationships prototypical of inalienable possession such as body part, part whole, and spatial relationships. Additionally, the juxtaposition of the possessor and possessum in the compound construction is reminiscent of inalienable possession in other languages. Therefore, this paper proposes that inalienability, a phenomenon not thought to be relevant in English, actually imbues noun compounds whose components exhibit an inalienable relationship with possessive semantics. -

The paper deals with the oracle-bone inscriptions referring to Fu Hao (or Zi), indirectly addressing the question whether this Fu Hao is the same person as the one mentioned in the bronze inscrip tions from M5 at Anyang. The combined researches of Shima Kunio and Yen I-p'ing have already established that all but one of the 262 Fu Zi oracle inscriptions so far known are from Tung Tso-pin's Period I. The only doubtful instance remaining is Jiabian 668, dated by Shima to Tung's Period IV. The main reason for this dating was the shape of the graph used for the character w_u b^- . On Jiabian 668, this graph is rendered as -£ , whereas according to the received opinion it should, in Period I, have been | , or W . Chang Ping-ch'lian, however, had also observed the graph ~% in Period I oracle bones. Therefore he agreed with Hu Houxuan's opinion that Jiabian 668 ought to date from Period I. -

Introduction, page 1 Introduction This book is concerned with how structure, meaning and communicative function interact in human languages. Language is a system of communicative social action in which grammatical structures are employed to express meaning in context. While all languages can achieve the same basic communicative ends, different languages use different linguistic means to achieve them, and an important aspect of these differences concerns the divergent ways syntax, semantics and pragmatics interact across languages. For example, the noun phrase referring to the entity being talked about (the ‘topic’) may be signalled by its position in the clause, by its grammatical function, by its morphological case, or by a particle in different languages, and moreover in some languages this marking may have grammatical consequences and in other languages it may not. The framework in which this investigation is to be carried out is Role and Reference Grammar [RRG].1 RRG grew out of an attempt to answer two basic questions, which were originally posed during the mid-1970’s: (i) what would linguistic theory look like if it were based on the analysis of Lakhota, Tagalog and Dyirbal, rather than on the analysis of English?, and (ii) how can the interaction of syntax, semantics and pragmatics in different grammatical systems best be captured and explained? Accordingly, RRG has developed descriptive tools and theoretical principles which are designed to expose this interaction and offer explanations for it. It posits three main representations: (1) a representation of the syntactic structure of sentences, which corresponds to the actual structural form of utterances, (2) a semantic representation representing important facets of the meaning of linguistic expressions, and (3) a representation of the information (focus) structure of the utterance, which is related to its communicative function. -

Chapter 23: Participles Chapter 23 covers the following: the formation, translation and use of participles in Latin, and the nature of relative time. At the end of the lesson we’ll review the vocabulary which you should memorize in this chapter. There are four important rules to remember in Chapter 23: (1) Latin has four participles: the present active, the future active; the perfect passive and the future passive. It lacks, however, a present passive participle (“being [verb]-ed”) and a perfect active participle (“having [verb]-ed”). (2) The perfect passive, future active and future passive participles belong to first/second declension. The present active participle belongs to third declension. (3) The verb esse has only a future active participle (futurus). It lacks both the present active and all passive participles. (4) Participles show relative time. What are participles? At heart, participles are verbs which have been turned into adjectives. Thus, technically participles are “verbal adjectives.” The first part of the word (parti-) means “part;” the second part (-cip-) means “take,” indicating that participles “partake, share” in the characteristics of both verbs and adjectives. In other words, the base of a participle is verbal, giving it some of the qualities of a verb, for instance, tense: it can indicate when the action is happening (now or then or later; i.e. present, past or future); conjugation: what thematic vowel will be used (e.g. -a- in first conjugation, -e- in second, and so on); voice: whether the word it’s attached to is acting or being acted upon (i.e. -

Instrumentality: The Core Meaning of the Coverb Yi 以 in Classical Chinese Sue-mei Wu 吳素美 Carnegie Mellon University Yi 以 is one of the most important and commonly used function words in Classical Chinese, and many researchers (e.g. Hsueh 1997, Pulleyblank 1995, Sun 1991, Wu 1994 and Wu 1997) have contributed to the discussion on yi's meanings and functions. The main issues in the current understanding of yi include its verb and coverb usages. Both usages have been thought to exhibit a range of meanings, and yi has been thought to be able to occur flexibly either before or after a verb phrase. In addition, yi is also thought to be a conjunction indicating the reason, purpose or result of an action. This study proposes that the verb yi fundamentally indicates instrumentality, and that the coverb yi, which is derived from the verb yi, still retains that fundamental notion of instrumentality. The notion of instrumentality has been extended in yi's coverb usage to indicate the means or reason by which an action occurs, or the time which an action occurs. Moreover, I will also argue that the yi phrase, when it occurs before a verb phrase, functions syntactically as a modifier to the verb phrase. When the yi phrase occurs after another verb phrase, however, the semantic emphasis has been deliberately put on the yi phrase, which then serves as the nucleus of the predicate. -

A Noun Phrase Parser of English Atro Voutilainen H elsinki A bstract An accurate rule-based noun phrase parser of English is described. Special attention is given to the linguistic description. A report on a performance test concludes the paper. 1. Introduction 1.1 Motivation. A noun phrase parser is useful for several purposes, e.g. for index term generation in an information retrieval application; for the extraction of collocational knowledge from large corpora for the development of computational tools for language analysis; for providing a shallow but accurately analysed input for a more ambitious parsing system; for the discovery of translation units, and so on. Actually, the present noun phrase parser is already used in a noun phrase extractor called NPtool (Voutilainen 1993). 1.2. Constraint Grammar. The present system is based on the Constraint Grammar framework originally proposed by Karlsson (1990). A few characteristics of this framework are in order. • The linguistic representation is based on surface-oriented morphosyntactic tags that can encode dependency-oriented functional relations between words. • Parsing is reductionistic. All conventional analyses are provided as alternatives to each word by a context-free lookup mechanism, typically a morphological analyser. The parser itself seeks to discard all and only the contextually illegitimate alternative readings. What 'survives' is the parse.• • The system is modular and sequential. Personal Pronouns, Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement, and Vague or Unclear Pronoun References PERSONAL PRONOUNS Personal pronouns are pronouns that are used to refer to specific individuals or things. Personal pronouns can be singular or plural, and can refer to someone in the first, second, or third person. First person is used when the speaker or narrator is identifying himself or herself. Second person is used when the speaker or narrator is directly addressing another person who is present. Third person is used when the speaker or narrator is referring to a person who is not present or to anything other than a person, e.g., a boat, a university, a theory. First-, second-, and third-person personal pronouns can all be singular or plural. Also, all of them can be nominative (the subject of a verb), objective (the object of a verb or preposition), or possessive. Personal pronouns tend to change form as they change number and function.
