Zoos Victoria uses ZIMS (Zoo Information Management System) to maintain animal records, details relating to animal numbers have based on reports generated directly from animal-records data- bases. There are some apparent discrepancies due to the ways in which animals on loan are captured by ZIMS. Common names and scientific names used by ZIMS in some instances differ from those typically used at Zoos Victoria, manual edits have typically occurred to provide for consistency.

Zoos Victoria’s contribution to recovery programs

As part of our Fighting Extinction commitment, Zoos Victoria participates in a number of government-agency managed Recovery Programs for threatened species. During the past twelve months the following animals have been released into protected habitat to help re-establish and bolster wild populations.

Property Number Species Release site Melbourne 8.15.4 Eastern Barred Bandicoot Greenvale, Vic Melbourne 0.1.0 Eastern Barred Bandicoot Little River, Vic Werribee 0.1.0 Eastern Barred Bandicoot Hamilton, Vic Healesville 8.5.1 Helmeted Honeyeater Yellingbo, Vic Healesville 7.6.0 Mountain Pygmy-possum Mt Buller, Vic Healesville 0.0.7 Northern Corroboree Frog Tidbinbilla, ACT Healesville 7.2.0 Orange-bellied Parrot Melaleuca, Tas Melbourne 0.0.285 Southern Corroboree Frog Mt Kosciusko, ACT Healesville 6.2.1 Tasmanian Devil Maria Island, Tas

Zoos Victoria’s contribution to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation

Every year hundreds of injured and orphaned wildlife are brought to Zoos Victoria for assessment, treatment and care. Many of these cases involve trauma, such as car accidents or attack by cats and dogs, resulting in fatal injuries. These cases may require euthanasia. Some cases may require rest and can be released within 24 hours of arrival. Some cases have minor injuries, and can be transferred to registered wildlife shelter operators having the appropriate expertise for further care. ZV veterinary staff will continue to monitor the health of cases transferred to wildlife carers. The number of animals presented to ZV for care is: • Melbourne Zoo, received 482 animals, of which 134 were successfully treated and returned to the wild, whilst 70 were transferred out to registered wildlife carers for further care and release • Healesville Sanctuary, received 1246 animals, of which 223 were successfully treated and returned to the wild, whilst 161 were transferred out to registered wildlife carers for further care and release • Werribee Open Range Zoo, received 145 animals, of which 22 were successfully treated and returned to the wild, whilst 16 were transferred out to registered wildlife carers for further care and release

Further information regarding ZV’s contribution to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation is reported to the Department of Sustainability and Environment.
