    Reappraising the English Anabaptists in the time of the Revolution: Article 50 of the 1646 confession By Paul Lusk Published in Anabaptism Today, Volume 1.2, October 2019 Journal Edited by Lloyd Pietersen Copy-edited by Trisha Dale Abstract In 1646 seven London churches ‘commonly (though falsely) called Anabaptist’ issued a revised confession with one innovation: to permit a Christian to be a ‘magistrate or civil officer’. Scholars align these churches, the foundation of the English Particular Baptists, with the Separatist-Congregationalist movement from which they sprang. Such analysis neglects their radical political thinking – like earlier Anabaptists, but unlike the Congregationalists, they denied that the state should endorse or enforce true religion. The conditions of 1646 made it possible to realise the Anabaptist vision for the ‘institutional separation of church and state’. As with the previous version, issued in 1644, this document shows them as theologically Calvinist, and holding to the ‘gathered’ church comprising only believers who are baptised by immersion. Each church is entitled to choose and appoint its own ministry, which the congregation should support financially. The 1646 edition shows evidence of thorough review with detailed improvement to the text.

    Glimpses of Church History in New England: A Photo Essay Craig J. Ostler New England holds a unique place in the heritage of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although relatively few events important to the history of the Church occurred on New England soil in comparison to other more prominent regions further west, this region was the seedbed of life and faith for many early mem- bers and leaders in the kingdom. That is, many of the first individ- uals to accept the Restoration of the gospel in latter days descended from early settlers of New England and themselves were born in this area of the United States. In addition, all members of the Church inherit blessings that religious freedom in America, espe- cially New England, bestowed upon the world. In particular, the Prophet Joseph Smith and President Brigham Young were born in Vermont and descended from New England ancestry. During sum- mer 2002 the Church history and doctrine faculty of Brigham Young University held a New England Regional Studies Seminar at various locations in a New England travel experience. We were blessed to see the homes, churches, cemeteries, and historical mark- ers that preserve the memory of early New England Saints, settlers, and colonists. The following show the homes of Joseph Smith’s forefathers and other important sites. In addition, photographs and short essays are included on the birthplace of Brigham Young in Whitingham, Vermont, and on early missionary labors of President Wilford Woodruff in Maine.     The Bible— A Priceless Treasure David M. Whitchurch David M. Whitchurch is an associate chair of the Department of Ancient Scripture at BYU. Four years ago, a friend and colleague invited me to participate in a writing project on the history of the English Bible.1 I eagerly accepted his invitation. We began, as most research efforts do, by familiarizing ourselves with the literature. However, unlike many projects, we deter- mined not only to understand how the Bible came forth but also to experience this marvelous book in other ways too. We included as part of our study a number of visits to some of the great English Bible repositories in the United States and Great Britain, where we could personally examine and photograph early editions of the Bible. I have a diffi cult time describing adequately the excitement we felt while hold- ing a Bible of John Wycliffe (c. 1382) or printed Bibles translated by Martin Luther (1522), Desiderius Erasmus (1516), William Tyndale (1530, 1534), Miles Coverdale (1535), John Rogers (1537), John Knox (1560), and the like. With generous funding, we also traveled to numerous sites where the events actually occurred.2 Standing at the church in Lutterworth, England, forcefully brought to mind the work of John Wycliffe, who stood fi rm against long-accepted practices of his day and who worked so energetically to produce the fi rst complete Bible translated into English. We repeated experiences such as these again and again from Wittenberg, Germany, to Geneva, Switzerland. I need not express verbally the feelings and depth of gratitude I have gained for the Bible and to those individuals who gave their all to bring it forth.

    Winslow Family MAY FLOWER QUARTERLY " Rededication at Elizabeth Tilley Howland's gravesite A special tour was arranged by The Pilgrim John Howland Society to include a rededication at the gravesite of Elizabeth Tilley Howland. On Friday, September 6 the society visited the first Baptist Church in America in Providence. It was founded by Roger Williams after he was warned to leave Massachuseus. From there tbe tour went to Little Neck Cemetery in Ri verside, R.l. In his remarks President Harry L. Walen noted that "we remember Eli zabeth Tilley as a girl, baptized Aug. 30, 1607 and nurtured in Henlow, England, in a time of religious and political unrest. Yet she was in a loving fa mily that brought her at the age of barely 13 to a land where she could hopefu lly mature into a per­ son free to worship with her family and friends according to their beliefs." Mr. Walen said her character was further shaped by the trauma of the cross­ ing, the abysmal crowded and wintry li ving cond itions on the anchored Mayflower, the sickness of the fi rst winter, the deaths of her father and mother and her uncle and aunt, and the demanding life ashore as the colo ny began to grow. "Just before her 16th birthday," he continued, "she married John Howland, almost twice her age. and found in him an understanding and considerate hus­ band. Her will, wriuen shortly before her death on Dec. 2 1, 1687 in her 80th year. refl ects her affection and respect for the fa ther of her I 0 children, as his will reflects his loving care for her." Also at the gravesite ser­ vice Lura Sellew recounted that Elizabeth was buried there because she had gone to li ve with daughter Lydia aft er John died.
