March was highlighted by the induction of three new members into the Club, and a visit by the District Governor and Assistant District Governor. Welcome to John Land, Lynne Genitti and Cari Lee Jones! I look forward to your full integra - tion into the Club, and the contributions that you will undoubtedly make in the community and to the Club. March also saw the winding down of our focus on community service organi - zation in preparation for the 2009-2010 budget. The month will end with the last Assembly for this fiscal year, and then we'll start preparing for our busy Spring/Summer events period and the transition to Doug Gerrard's leadership. The Bread & Honey Pancake Breakfast and Camp Enterprise are next on the horizon. We've satisfied most of our major financial pledges for the year. This includes the final payment of $20,000 to the Credit Valley Hospital in fulfillment of our $100,000 pledge and, most recently, our $3,000 payment to the Rotary Founda - tion. The latter was presented to the District Governor during his visit. Our pledge to Camp Enterprise has been paid, and our finances appear to be on target to leave the incoming leadership team with cash on hand. I encourage you all to look forward enthusiastically to participating in our Spring/Summer schedule of events because the community service is our ultimate reason for being together and the events allow us to enjoy each other's company after a hard Winter of mainly meetings, heckling and fines. I find that our Club is at its best when doing something. We're action-oriented! It's also a time when our spouses, kids, grandkids, nephews, nieces, friends, etc. get a better chance to participate in Rotary with us. I, myself, am ready to do something tangible in Streetsville, and my wife and kids are already asking about our next event. Please roll up your sleeves, start encouraging our event organiz - ers (Doug, Bob M, Scott, Arvind) with your readiness to work, and start recruiting more volunteers in waiting. 4 ROTARY 2008/2009: MAKE DREAMS REAL ““WW HHOO ’’SS WWHHOO ”” Douglas (Doug) J. Gerrard Born in Montreal Quebec, started school in Toronto, graduated Downsview Second - ary School in 1963 with Certificate of Merit. Joined the Sea Cadets in High School which led to joining the Royal Canadian Navy Venture Short Service Officer Training Plan for Naval Aviators. Naval College in Esquimalt BC, Flight Training in Centralia ON, Penhold AB, Gimli MB, Patricia Bay BC. After military service Doug married and started a civilian business career with Roth - man’s Tobacco in Nuclear Quality Control then progressed to Marketing Finance and Advertising. Moved to subsidiary company Carling O’Keefe Breweries to operate the worlds first four place civilian Aerobatic Team as a marketing tool. Left to join the Canadian National Exhibition to manage the Sports and Special Attractions Depart - ment. In addition to military college, Doug’s formal education also includes York University (Atkinson) Certificate in Business Communication, Canadian Institute of Management Studies, University of Guelph BA programme in Computers, University of Toronto BA Business and Computers. Started his own Marketing Promotion company in 1977 which evolved into a com - puter game company and finally into a Computer Hardware and Service company. This company was sold in 1998 and Doug retired. Doug joined Home Depot in 1998 as a part-timer and, as Operations Manager, in 2008 accepted a retirement package. Doug is serving a second term as President of the Rotary Club of Streetsville and his leisure time will be spent pursuing his interests in sailing his Hunter sailboat, flying, SCUBA diving, the Stock Market and attending his Clubs and Affiliations with Rotary, the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Royal Canadian Legion and Aerobatics’ Canada. Doug and his wife Jan (also a Rotarian) have four daughters - Kim, Dana, Jennifer and Joanne, as well as four Grandchildren Brenna, Cassidy, Dillon, and Graydon. Council supports the existing door to door mail delivery system and wishes to retain this valuable service in our communities. Council is requesting that Canada Post undertake greater public consultation with residents in Mississauga prior to transitioning to community mailboxes. Moreover, Council requests that local Members of Parliament and representatives from Canada Post conduct these public consultations. Until this public engagement is complete, Council will be unable to endorse the proposal of Canada Post to remove door to door delivery in favour of community mailboxes. The City of Mississauga has planned and integrated all existing community mailboxes in our neighbourhoods. The new community mailboxes being proposed by Canada Post may be difficult to situate within our existing neighbourhoods and will result in the potential for greater litter, vandalism and graffiti, and snow and ice control. As such, Council is requesting greater consultation and public engagement prior to Council's endorsement of the implementation of the new community mailboxes.

    MUNICIPAL UPDATE Back In The Tower Again Angela Drennan THE SWEARING IN Toronto City Council was sworn in on December 4, 2018 to a Council Chamber full of family, friends and staff. The new Council is comprised of 25 Members including the Mayor, making it 26 (remember this now means to have an item passed at Council a majority +1 is needed, i.e. 14 votes). Councillor stalwart Frances Nunziata (Ward 5 York South Weston) was re-elected as the Speaker, a position she has held since 2010 and Councillor Shelley Carroll (Ward 17 Don Valley North) was elected as Deputy Speaker. The ceremonial meeting moved through the motions of pomp and circumstance with measured fanfare and Councillors, old and new, looking eager to get down to “real” work the next day during the official first meeting of City Council. Mayor Tory, during his first official address, stressed the need for Council consensus, not dissimilar to the previous term and reiterated his campaign positions on the dedication to build more affordable housing, address gun violence through youth programming and build transit, specifically the downtown relief line. Tory did suggest that the City still needs to take a financially prudent approach to future initiatives, as financial streams such as the land transfer tax have lessened due to a slower real estate market environment, a signal that cuts, reallocations or revenue tools will likely need to be revisited for debate during the term (the uploading of the TTC will help with the City’s financial burden, but isn’t enough). THE MAYOR’S OFFICE There have been some notable staff changes in Mayor John Tory’s Office, here are a few: We say goodbye to Vic Gupta, Tory’s Principal Secretary, who will be greatly missed but we say hello to Vince Gasparro, Liberal, Tory’s Campaign Co-Chair and longtime friend of the firm, who has taken over that position.

    Resist expansion of euthanasia law, Toronto archbishop says The “cold shadow” of euthanasia is spreading, warns Cardinal Thomas Collins Speaking to more than 1,600 guests at the 39th annual Cardinal’s Dinner in Toronto, the cardinal urged them to resist any attempt to expand the federal euthanasia law to include minors. “The time for review of the federal euthanasia law is upon us, and there is great pressure to eliminate the so-called ‘safeguards’ which made it seem to be not so terrible,” he told the audience Nov. 8 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. “One such safeguard is that euthanasia is to be only for adults. Now we hear arguments made that the concept of ‘adult’ is to be made so elastic that even minors are to be eligible for euthanasia, even without the consent of their parents. The cold shadow of euthanasia is spreading further in our land, and we must resist that.” A government committee is expected to deliver a report next month that examines extending assisted suicide to youth under 18, psychiatric patients and consenting adults who give an advance directive to be euthanized in the event they become incapacitated by illness or disease The cardinal stressed the need for access to palliative care. “That, not euthanasia, is the way forward,” he said. “When people are lonely and feel that they are useless, and that life is not worth living, we must reach out, in practical love and support.
