This summary captures what has been achieved by working together and with local communities during the past year. Our Plan focuses on 5 local priorities for the area: Stronger Communities Safer Communities Supporting Health and Active Communities Tackling Poverty and Inequalities Connectivity and Transport The priorities have been identified through community engagement and we believe they are key to improving the quality of life for everyone in Banff and Buchan. Margaret-Jane Cardno Chair of Banff and Buchan Community Planning Group Banff and Buchan Area Manager, Aberdeenshire Council 2 Local Community Plan Banff and Buchan 2016-2019 Priority 1 - Stronger Communities Community Planning Stakeholders, with a commitment to supporting and building confident, skilled, influential and active communities in Banff and Buchan, through community engagement and dialogue with our communities. What We Said We’d Do ‘Increased participation, supporting people to take part in decision making.’ What Progress We’ve Made Fraserburgh Your Voice, Your Choice Pilot Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a process of involving citizens in deciding how to spend public money. At its core, it is about community members shaping local services to meet local priorities more effectively. PB is being promoted and supported as a priority by the Scottish Government. Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership (a partnership of NHS Grampian, Aberdeenshire Council and voluntary organisations delivering Health and Social Care services) allocated a budget of £100,000 to fund local initiatives to improve health and wellbeing in specific areas of the North of Fraserburgh which had been identified as having poor health outcomes. In total, 40 applications were received by the closing date, 35 of these applications met the criteria and were put through to the Big Vote Day. 2 Applications were withdrawn before the event, which left 33 to present on the day. 3 Local Community Plan 2016-2019 Banff and Buchan 32 projects through to big vote day totalling £191,906.98 17 out of 32 projects funded. A total of 935 votes cast on the day. Diverse range of bids from baby and toddler groups to Older People’s forum Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action (AVA) provided support to groups who were unsuccessful in receiving funding. Over 67% of attendees were eligible to vote on the day. Positive Outcomes Foyer REACH Group have reached Level 3 Accreditation for their involvement in the Big Vote. They supplied, prepared and served food at the event, which received a very well deserved positive feedback from the participants. Police Youth Volunteers – Participation in the lead up and during the event has helped the volunteers to get their Saltire award. Fraserburgh Sea Cadets received funding for a mini bus and have offered the use of the bus while not in use for the group to community organisations (subject to insurance being in place) Fraserburgh Sea Cadets secured match funding of £8000 from Children in Need as a result of securing funding from Fraserburgh Your Choice, Your Voice. They now can buy a better equipped and newer mini-bus. West End Bowling Club received funding towards a new kitchen. Use of the kitchen has been extended to the wider community to help support community events. Fraserburgh Community Safety Group have joined up with Fraserburgh First Responders. Both groups successfully received funding to buy 3 defibrillators and provide First Responder training in the community respectively these groups will work collaboratively to take their individual projects forward. 16 members of the public expressed an interest in becoming involved in future PB events Challenges The venue could have been bigger to fit attendance on the Big Vote Day Voting registration process to be made clearer Open the funding to all of Fraserburgh Use digital voting tools to reach a wider audience 4 Local Community Plan Banff and Buchan 2016-2019 Partners Involved Aberdeenshire Community Planning Partnership Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership Aberdeenshire Council NHS Grampian Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action Fraserburgh Development Trust Aberdeen Foyer Police Scotland Youth Volunteers Reach Project PB Partnership Community Payback 5 Local Community Plan 2016-2019 Banff and Buchan Priority 2 - Safer Communities To work with partners to deliver on Community Safety in Banff and Buchan and develop a better understanding of safety issues in our community. What We Said We’d Do ‘To improve community safety within Banff and Buchan and reduce nuisance and harassment in the community, creating a safer environment.’ What Progress We’ve Made Safer Community Wardens The Community Safety Team have recently employed two Safer Community Wardens for the Fraserburgh area. This role will link closely with our Community Safety Group which brings together volunteers to drive forward Community Safety at the local level – offering funding and support to local initiatives. The warden role also links in and works closely with schools (secondary and primary) offering patrols during desired times and inputs to pupils as requested (working with Police Scotland’s school liaison officers and Crime Reduction Officers); the role links in with local businesses to progress the shop watch scheme. The Wardens will also become an integral part of the Banff and Buchan Community Planning Group and will give regular updates of local information and issues to look at taking a partnership approach to working together in the future. Partners Involved Aberdeenshire Council, Police Scotland, Local Community Safety Group, Banff and Buchan Community Planning 6 Local Community Plan Banff and Buchan 2016-2019 Priority 3 - Healthier Communities Reductions in inequalities in health outcomes between communities across Aberdeenshire What We Said We’d Do ‘Opportunities for affordable physical, active play and open safe places for play (including smoke free developments) are accessed in target areas.’ What Progress We’ve Made Fraserburgh Secret Garden Project The opportunity to engage in physical activity brings wide-ranging health benefits. It helps people look after their own health. The Fraserburgh Secret Garden is a location that Health and Social Care services can tap into. In 2016, 800 volunteer hours were invested in the garden. This involved 75 people taking part in regular outdoor activity. Visits were made by approximately 10 schools and nurseries, in addition, there was a visit from a group of residents from a local care home. Many of this group indicated that they will be returning next year when the weather improves. The long-term benefits are that more people are able to participate in health activities in the outdoors and also to encourage greater inclusion and social interaction. Partners Involved Community Volunteers, Fraserburgh Development Trust, Community Planning Partners, Health and Social Care Partnership 7 Local Community Plan 2016-2019 Banff and Buchan Priority 4 - Tackling Poverty and Inequalities Improving life chances for our most vulnerable individuals and families What We Said We’d Do ‘Improved Health and Wellbeing and social participation amongst all age groups. Good physical and mental health (and wellbeing) can make a difference in people’s health and life chances. By supporting people to take responsibility for their own health and lifestyle choices, we can aim to reduce inequalities.’ What Progress We’ve Made Banff and Buchan Wellbeing Events The Aberdeenshire Wellbeing Festival (May 2016 & May 2017) support Mental Health Awareness Week: The festival promotes and celebrates everyday community opportunities which contribute to our wellbeing. A healthy diet and regular exercise are good for our physical and mental

Aberdeenshire, alongside Aberdeen City, forms one of the most prosperous regions in the country, despite the fall in the price of oil. Skills Development Scotland provides that the region’s economy will continue to grow through 2024, at the 3rd highest rate in the country. The jobs market in the Banff and Buchan region is prima facie less positive than is currently the case in Aberdeenshire. This is evidenced by the fact that, as at March 2017, the economic activity rate in Banff and Buchan is 5.5% lower than Aberdeenshire’s equivalent rate (77.4% versus 82.9%). Approximately 11,200 people aged 16-64 in the Banff and Buchan region are economically inactive (22.6% of the working age population). Of these, approximately 31.4% (or 3,500 people) are categorised as “long-term sick”, which is considerably higher than Aberdeenshire’s corresponding rate (23%).

GAMRIE AND PENNAN COAST Site of Special Scientific Interest SITE MANAGEMENT STATEMENT Site code: 666 Address: Inverdee House, Baxter Street, Torry, Aberdeen AB11 9QA Tel: 01224 266500 email: [email protected] Purpose This is a public statement prepared by SNH for owners and occupiers of the SSSI. It outlines the reasons it is designated as an SSSI and provides guidance on how its special natural features should be conserved or enhanced. This statement does not affect or form part of the statutory notification and does not remove the need to apply for consent for operations requiring consent. We welcome your views on this statement. Description of the site Gamrie and Pennan Coast SSSI is important for both its biological and geological interests. These interests and their management are described in greater detail below. Geology The rocks exposed in the western end of Gamrie and Pennan Coast SSSI are metamorphic rocks (those which have been altered by heat and pressure) belonging to the Dalradian Supergroup. These rocks were originally formed late in the Precambrian between 800 and 600 million years ago, when they were deposited as sediments on the edge of an ancient ocean. Then, between 500 and 400 million years ago, continental collision closed the ocean building a chain of mountains that may have been similar to the Alps in scale. During this mountain-building event the Dalradian rocks were buried deep within the Earth, where they were metamorphosed and deformed. Because the rocks were buried at different depths, the amount of metamorphism is variable across the outcrop of the Dalradian.
