Get those winter warmers on and head out for a walk in one of Alfred Wainwright’s favourite spots….

Travelling through seven miles of spectacular scenery within sight of England’s highest mountains, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway is certainly the little railway with the big views.

One of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in the country, the attraction transports passengers from the Lake District’s only coastal village, Ravenglass, to the Dalegarth for Boot station, some 210ft above sea level.

Why not wrap up warm this winter and combine a trip on this affectionately-known ‘La’al Ratty’ with a walk through the beautiful Eskdale valley?

Whether you are an experienced walker or just want to enjoy a gentle stroll, there is something to suit everyone and when coupled with a trip on the railway it makes for a unique day out.

You could travel to Dalegarth before following the carefully described walk back to Ravenglass, taking in every other station on the line.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, there’s an option to walk over the crest of Muncaster Fell, and it’s easy to divert to Eskdale Green village too. The beauty of this ‘Steam and Ramble’ is that there is never a train too far away.

And for those who want to explore some local food and drink, get ready for a ‘Beer n Bangers’ walk of which they are plenty. Do the Circuit of Caw, Black Beck, Black Combe or walk the circuit of the Lake District’s largest tarn - Devoke Water. Make sure you stop at Waberthwaite for a pint at the Brown Cow Inn and a visit to Woodall’s Butchers (holders of the Royal warrant for the production of Cumberland sausage and hams!)

During your walk your eyes will not only be treated to outstanding mountainous views and scrumptious food but also a rich biodiversity of wildlife, from various species of migratory and resident birds at the Ravenglass estuary to the native Red Squirrels which hide in Miterdale Forest.

The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway is open all through the Christmas period, except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day when the trains will be given a well-deserved rest.
