Abstract With the increase in the availability of genomic data, sequences from different loci are usually concatenated in a supermatrix for phylogenetic inference. However, as an alternative to the supermatrix approach, several implementations of the multispecies coalescent (MSC) have been increasingly used in phylogenomic analyses due to their advantages in accommodating gene tree topological heterogeneity by taking account population-level processes. Moreover, the development of faster algorithms under the MSC is enabling the analysis of thousands of loci/taxa. Here, we explored the MSC approach for a phylogenomic dataset of Insecta. -

Box 49, Hungary A key for separating sister genera Arcas SWAINSON, 1832 and Theritas HÜBNER, 1818, plus eight nominal species placed in Theritas is given. Three species groups within the latter genus are distinguished. A new species, Theritas gozmanyi BÁLINT et WOJTUSIAK, sp. n. is described form Ecuador. The presence of a discal scent pad on the fore wing dorsal surface and spectral characteristics of the light reflected from the central part of the discal cell were used as charac- ters for discrimination of the new species. Key words: androconial clusters, spectroscopy, structural colours, Theritas species-groups INTRODUCTION The generic name Theritas was established by monotypy for the new species Theritas mavors by HÜBNER (1818). The genus-group name was not in general use until the revision of D’ABRERA (1995), who placed 23 species-group taxa in Theritas on the basis of the character “the pennent-like tail which projects out- wards, and an approximate right angle from, and as a part of, a squared-off projec- tion of the tapered h. -

JOURNAL OF THE LEPIDOPTERISTS' SOCIETY Volume 25 1971 Number 2 A REVIEW OF THE GENUS ARGAS WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF NEW SPECIES (LYCAENIDAE, STRYMONINI) S. S. NICOLAY 1500 Wakefield Drive, Virginia Beach, Virginia In 1832, William Swainson described Arcas as a "subgenus" of the sub family "Theclanae" (= Theclinae) and established Papilio imperialis Cramer as the type species. Yet, most writers throughout the intervening 138 years have neglected to use the name, to identify additional species as belonging to this subgenus or to further define and clarify its status. The purpose of this work is to establish Arcas as a valid genus of the Lycaenidae, and to separate those species that belong to Arcas from thc all-inclusive genus Thecla. Arcas, as presently conceived, contains seven species; five heretofore contained in Thecla Fabricius, the sixth and seventh described as new. The male of one species, A. splendor Druce has been unknown for almost 64 ycars and is herein described and figured for the first time. Clench (1963) allied Arcas with Atlides Htibner and Pseudolycaena Wallen gren. Certainly the three genera share many structural similarities. By the same token, Arcas may be readily separated from both by such sig nificant characters as the male scent-spot, the very deep tornal cleft and extraordinarily long tails on the hind wing, and obvious differences in the genitalia of both sexes. All species in the genus are Neotropical. The type species, A. imperialis has the widest distribution, being found virtually unchanged in habitus from Mexico south through Panama and throughout South America to southern Brazil and Bolivia (Figure 6). -

Calisto species occupy an extremely diverse array of habitats, suggestive of adaptive radiation on the scale of other classic examples such as the Galápagos or Darwin’s finches. However, a reliable species classification is a key requisite before further evolutionary or ecological research. An analysis of 111 DNA ‘barcodes’ (655 bp of the mitochondrial gene COI) from 29 putative Calisto species represented by 31 putative taxa was therefore conducted to elucidate taxonomic relationships among these often highly cryptic and confusing taxa. -

This ``false head'' pattern is considered an adaptation to deflect predator attacks to less vulnerable parts of the body. The presence of symmetrical damage in left and right wings is considered evidence of failed predator attacks to perching butterflies. In this research, we tested the prediction derived from the deflection hypothesis that the degree of resemblance of the false head area (FH) to a real head, as measured by the number of FH ``components'' (eyespots, ``false antennae'', modified outline of the FH area and lines converging on the FH area) present in the hindwings, is positively correlated to the frequency of symmetrical damage in the FH area. AUSTIN and KURT JOHNSON Nevada State Museum and Historical Society, 700 Twin Lakes Drive, Las Vegas, Nevada 89107; and Dept. of Entomology, American Museum of Natural History, Central Park West at 79th Street, New York, New York 10024, USA ABSTRACT.- Three new species of Areas are distinguished among samples of the genus from the lowland tropical rainforest in the western Amazon drainage of central Rondonia, Brazil: Areas magnified n. sp., Areas viriditas n. sp., and Areas marginata n. sp. Morphological distinctions of the genitalia corroborate superficial differences noted in wing pattern and androconial brands. Samples of other Eumaeini genera from this study area contain numerous examples of new species occurring in sympatry and/or synchrony with more well-known taxa. These afford an opportunity for study of ecological and biological differences separating these taxa. KEY WORDS: Amazon, Areas magnified n. sp., Areas marginata n. sp., Areas viriditas n. sp., cryptic species, Eiseliana, Eumaeini, Heoda, Neotropical, South America, species diversity. The state of Rondonia in western Brazil has a short history of C-20, along road B-65 between roads C-0 and C-25, and to about biological exploration. Until recently, access to its more than 10 km west of B-65 along roads C-5, C-10, C-15, and C-20. The 240,000 square kilometers was difficult except for the vicinity of total area surveyed, consisting of about 65km of trails and roads, its capital, Porto Velho.
