St. John’s Lutheran Church

December 2020 Church Bell

From the Desk of Pastor Clark

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” - John 10:10

In just a few weeks, we will be celebrating the coming of God’s own Son to this world. Why did Jesus come? He came to fulfill prophecy. He came in obedience to the Father. He came to testify to the Truth. But, most of all, He came because He loves us and wanted us to experience life to the full! This life is intended to be a fulfilling gift from our Maker. Unfortunately, too many people never experience it that way. Things like worry, bitterness, illness, fear, bad decisions, and a sense of meaninglessness make this life seem less like a gift and more like a daily grind. Jesus’ life and death dealt in full with all those things so that we might get that abundant life back.

Would you say your life is being lived to the full? It’s yours for the taking. Jesus came, lived, suffered, and died for you to have it by faith. Do you need forgiveness? It’s yours by faith. Do you need peace? It’s yours by faith. Do you need healing? It’s yours by faith. Do you need guidance and meaning? It’s your by faith. Hallelujah, this is why He came! Let’s celebrate the One who came to give us abundant and everlasting life!

God bless you,

Pastor Clark

Women in Mission “Mites Sunday” Our Women in Mission will have a “Mites Sunday” once per month to provide monies for the mission grants voted on at the LWML Minnesota South District Convention. For December: The Timothy Project—Mayer Lutheran High School: The Timothy Scholarship provides tuition assistance to non-Lutheran families who are unchurched or nominally Christian, so that they will pay less tuition than a Lutheran family to attend Mayer Lutheran High School. This scholarship provides $1,500 to the first ten community students who enroll for a total of $15,000. This grant would expand the funds available to help even more families enroll their children in a Christ-centered school. Please consider giving an offering in our Mites Offering box as you leave worship or take home a box of your own and turn back in!

Ever since the planned Warm & Fuzzy distribution event was COVID canceled, the MOSES Board has been looking for ways to successfully pair products with people. We will have a community distribution event when COVID regulations ease but have recently found alternate ways to help others. In the last month, Parkside and Northwinds Elementary Schools have called about socks, underwear and PJs for kids in need, and the leader of a winter clothing drive picked up all the knitted hats. A project we started with Wrapped in Love, the new free clothing store for Wright County Foster Children is ready to go, and we ask St. John’s members for assistance. If you have ideas and/or can help set up the Wrapped in Love Warm & Fuzzy nook, please call Beth Husom at 952-715-7281. On another note, WINTER IS COMING. Please call a MOSES team member for help getting your yards ready for this season change. After about a 6 month break from indoor work, last month MOSES decided to look at small projects inside residences if they are needed to keep you safe and warm, provided we can find the proper help and everyone involved follows state health mandates. Always remember volunteers: please pass on anything you aren’t comfortable with. St John’s is filled with caring members, and the MOSES volunteer list is long!

Blessings, Beth Husom

If you are 70 ½ & own an IRA, this information is for you:

Did you know that you can make a contribution to a charity like St. John’s Lutheran Church directly from your IRA to the Church and save paying some taxes?

Qualified Charitable Donations automatically satisfy required minimum distributions for the year when the Qualified Charitable Donations is made. That’s a real advantage for a charitably minded IRA owner who doesn’t need required minimum distribution to live on.

To make a contribution, contact your IRA trustee/Agent to make a transfer from the IRA directly to St. John’s Lutheran Church . Many trustees/agents already have forms and procedures in place to make this transfer. It won’t qualify if the check is made out to you. The Internal Revenue Service has said that a check from an IRA may be made payable to a charitable organization described in section 408(d)(8) and delivered by the IRA owner to the charitable organization.2 Be sure to obtain a letter of acknowledgment

from the charity.

Further questions, contact your IRA trustee/agent to see if your IRA qualifies for this. (This information provided by Janice Marschel).

December 2020 Lutheran Hour Sermon Topics

Each Sunday morning at 7:30 AM before St. John’s radio broadcast at 8:00 AM, listen to the Lutheran Hour broadcast on KRWC 1360 AM Radio. In December, you will hear the following program broadcast topics: Dec 6 "Seek My Face" with Rev. Dr. Michael Zeigler. We sometimes hear the voice before we see the face that goes with it. Seek God's face where you hear God's Word. (Daniel) Dec 13 "The Prophet's Paradox " with Rev. Dr. Michael Zeigler. The prophet Daniel illustrates how to face the facts while never losing faith in how the story ends. (Daniel: 10, 11 and 12) Dec 20 "Experience God " with Rev. Dr. Michael Zeigler. We will never fully grasp the idea of God, but that doesn't keep us from experiencing God's love for us in Christ. (John 1:1-18) Dec 27 "Welcome to the Family!" with Guest Speaker: Rev. Dr. Anthony (Tony) Cook. The book of Galatians gives us a glimpse inside the family of God. It describes the Christian family as one that stands firm in Christ's freedom, walks united in the Spirit, and bears one another's burdens in love. (Galatians 4:4-7)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Thanks to the generosity of our St. John’s family, we were able to deliver MANY boxes to the distribution center to be sent to children all around the world. What a joy it is to be a part of this wonderful ministry! We couldn’t have done this without your participation, time, and generosity.

Dramatic play for December: Post Office. We will wrap gifts, write cards, and send and deliver mail to all our preschool friends!

What is happening this month?

During the month of December:

On display this month… Noah’s Ark preschool students! Come and get into the holiday spirit while you check out what our preschool has been working on during our creative time. Find out about our artists and get a glimpse into our wonderful preschool.

Special Ministries & Life Groups

LIFE Groups are a fantastic way to stay connected to a smaller group of people while it's harder to be in a larger group. Many of us will not get to travel and gather during the holidays as we normally would. Joining a group is a great opportunity to maintain some fellowship and growth, while staying safe. Reach out to any group leader or Katherine Clark to get more information about getting connected to a group. Or register online at stjohnsbuffalo.org/ministries/life-groups/

Youth

Sr. High Youth Bible Class DESIGN is an acrostic that stands for the different ingredients (Passions, experience, gifts, etc.) that, when combined, equal YOU! When you recognize and develop each of these six categories, you’ll be on your way to realizing your full potential in Christ. Three wonderful things begin to happen when you are willing to launch out and use your gifts for the sake of the kingdom: you will know amazing joy, enjoy healthy accountability and experience accelerated spiritual growth. The more you understand the way the Lord designed you to be, the better you will be able to cooperate with His design.

Children & Family

Join us for our FAMILY CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICE December 24th at 3:00 & 5:00 PM

These 2 services are geared towards children of all ages and children at heart! It will be an interactive, simple celebration of our Savior’s birth. Merry Christmas!

15

Children & Family During the month of December, students and parents are invited to stop by our Sunday school bulletin board and share what things bring them joy this Christmas Season. Help us remember that Jesus is the reason for the Season!

NO Sunday School classes on: December 27 and January 3.

3 Year Olds-5th Graders, you are invited to be a part of our Family Christmas Services in a special way! While we cannot do a regular in-person Christmas Program this year, we still want to offer a chance for you to help share the true meaning of Christmas! Everyone can take a part and take a pic! To find out how to participate, visit our website at: stjohnsbuffalo.org or contact Kelly Thole.

During the month of December, all the Sunday school and children's worship offering will go to cover the cost of shipping shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. All over the U.S. churches, businesses, individuals and families will pack a shoebox for a child who may have never received a gift. Each box costs $9.00 to ship, so to help cover that cost we will collect our Sunday School offering for December to assist in this need.

LWML/WIM/St. John’s Women

I can hardly believe it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. WIM’s project for December will be Adopt-a-Family in conjunction with the Buffalo Rotary. We have received our family and now we need your help. Our family includes 2 adults and 9 children. This program is to provide the essentials for this family. They can also apply for the Toys for Tots program, so we will not be gathering toys. Look for the tree in the narthex. It will have paper ornaments with a gift for the family. Included will be the person’s age, size, favorite color; so you will have a little help in picking out gifts. If you are unable to pick up ornaments yourself, please call the church office and we will pick ornaments for you and call you with the suggestions. The WIM Board is also working on getting pictures, sizes, and prices of our remaining quilts on the church website. Sales of these quilts will also go to missions. Something to think about . . . maybe a quilt would be a great Christmas present or you may just need one to ‘cuddle-up in’ as we Stay Safe in MN through the Covid 19 pandemic. I would also like to invite the females in the church to Tuesday afternoons from 12:30 –4. This is traditionally called sewing circle, but you do not have to sew to join us. We also tie quilts, organize fabric, can make items for the 2021 Country Fair, etc. If you have suggestions for projects, we would love to hear about them and put them in motion. And lastly, a huge thank you!!! I am and feel so blessed at the response to both our mini-fair and the Silent Auction baskets. We raised $1,522 from the sale of the baskets and further donations. The unofficial total for Missions is $7,600. We are setting up an online voting survey in order to disperse the funds. We will send a list of where last year’s funds were donated and also ask for any new missions you would like us to help.

Merry Christmas and please join us to “Serve The Lord with Gladness!”

Mary Bremmer, WIM Chair
