4) Looking at the setting, the costumes expressions on the characters faces (mise-en-scene) how does it represent the location. Setting Eastenders is set in Albert Square located in the in backlot of the BBC Centre , . Settings used are mostly the café and the Restaurant. I think this shows that the community is quite sociable. In most scenes more than one household involved, a mixture of people in each house. E.g. Masood at Dot’s house and Roxy at Jack’s house. Body language and facial expressions Depending on what the storyline is they sometimes look happy or sad at the start of most episodes. Some characters are see in their pyjamas. From the photo above the cast members show a wild range of facial expressions. Some cast simply flashing a smile and some looking a bit exhausted. This may suggest that the cast members are delighted to be amongst each other as a community. The poster shows many expressions behind it. Mise-en-Scene Eastenders builds realistic views of working class families to try represent the typical codes and conventions of working class families. This also includes the location in which it is set in which shows a huge effect so audience/viewers can familiarize themselves with the way the characters live. The clothing used in Eastenders is highly realistic as this suggests the class background. E.g. some characters are often seen in suits or shirts, where as some characters could wear something that may seem to the audience/viewers as “scruffy”. This indicates that the characters come from different sorts of backgrounds. E.g. A Upper Middle Class – the Hubbard family and the Bill family and C2 Skilled Working Class – the

6 Carter family + 2 other characters. The mise-en-scene also reflects to the lighting which creates the sense of realism. This could also create different meanings that allows audiences/viewers to generate new ideas and begin to “stereotype” in a way that some characters are labelled either positively or negatively.

5) Why has the producer included all these types of characters? I think the reason why the producer included all these types of characters was to make to spice things making it exciting and interesting. This also helps create the tension and atmosphere of the show due to the circumstances they are facing.

6) Which types of social issues could some of the characters have in the storylines? a) Religion b) Mental health c) Work and occupations d) Sexuality
