Of course I could walk, and anyway when you can’t run that’s what most runners do in ultra events anyway! Well I’m down to one week to go, due to fly to Brisbane on Thursday morning. This last week is a rest week, with my last run on Tuesday for only about an hour. The event was held at Runaway Bay Super Sports Centre on the Gold Coast. It is a privately run sports facility offering first class amenities. The athletic track boasted a mondo surface and electronic timing was in place. My support crew was my husband Bob and, before I knew it, there I was along with the other competitors Phew! I’m glad that’s over. Carol Baird including those opting for 48 hours. To follow on, Bob and I spent the following three days relaxing in a high rise with a balcony – beautiful weather and with a view right over the ocean. (I had never been to the Gold Coast before – and the high-rise apartment with a balcony was my only request when Bob was organising the accommodation.) We then caught up with some friends living at Toowoomba and chose to come back to by train – two nights in Sydney then home by coach – it should have been by train to Canberra. Let’s not lose our train service! After two weeks of rest, I have slowly returned to training. I have decided to return to Adelaide for the 20th Anniversary of the Sri Chinmoy 24 Hour Festival of Running, on the October 4/5 – can I do it again? Did I do it? Yes I did! I completed 180.9km in the 24 Hour National Track Championship and was placed First Female and third overall. My best news is I ran 23 minutes faster than my first marathon (4:13:12). I am looking forward to a much longer rest and recovery, until training starts again to get ready for the 12 Hour Relaxing, despite the weather, after the event.
