Berlin, 20.10.2020 Harriet Publicover לליאן, אהובי For Lian, my love ABSTRACT Meat, Milk and Scripture: Early Rabbinic Interpretations of the Biblical Prohibition of a Forbidden Mixture This thesis addresses the early rabbinic interpretations of the thrice repeated biblical commandment, you shall not cook a kid in his mother’s milk (Exodus 23:19; Exodus 34:26; Deuteronomy 14:21). While this commandment is considered to be the source of the Jewish prohibition of mixing meat and milk products, there is no evidence that such a dietary custom was practised until after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE. In this sense, it may be assumed that this particular interpretation of the biblical commandment was a rabbinic innovation, perhaps inspired by a desire to create a protective buffer around the biblical prohibition of cooking a kid in his mother’s milk. Over the course of this thesis, I will illustrate how the rabbinic practice of separating meat and dairy was later systematically justified and given scriptural authority through the exegesis of this seemingly specific biblical commandment.

    We are How We Eat: A Jewish Approach to Food and Sustainability By Rabbi Yonatan Neril and Rabbi Yedidya (Julian) Sinclair The beginning of the Torah makes clear the centrality of eating to human existence: “And the Lord God commanded man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat. But of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat of it, for on the day that you eat thereof, you shall surely die" (Genesis 2:16-17). Adam and Eve transgressed this command with the first sin – eating from the Tree. Rabbi Tsadok HaKohen teaches that the Tree of Life represents holy eating, while the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil represents eating suffused with physical pleasure.1 Based on this, Sarah Yehudit Schneider, a contemporary teacher of Torah in Jerusalem, writes that humanity's first sin was not Adam and Eve's eating of forbidden fruit, but rather the way they ate it. The Tree of Knowledge… was not a tree or a food or a thing at all. Rather it was a way of eating. Whenever a person grabs self-conscious pleasure from the world, he falls, at that moment, from God consciousness....Whenever we eat without proper kavanna (intention) we repeat this original sin. The primary fixing of human civilization is to learn to eat in holiness. A Jewish Approach to Eating In a pivotal moment in the book of Genesis, Esau returns tired from the field and encounters Jacob, who has prepared a red lentil stew. Esau says to him, “Pour me (haliteni) some of that red red stuff,”2 and agrees to sell his birthright in exchange for the stew.

Thus the foundation myth of Yavneh, the story designed to describe the providential establishment of the rabbinic academy in the wake of the destruction of Jerusalem, risks depicting its central hero as a deserter, perhaps even as a defector and a traitor. Why would the rabbis have portrayed one of the most important sages of the formative period in rabbinic Judaism in this apparently unfavorable manner? Perhaps this unflattering interpretation of Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai’s role in the Yavneh legend is anachronistic in that it projects modern ideologies and ethical sensibilities into the past.1 Thus, for example, when Y.
