1974. Emile Habiby, a Palestinian writer born in Haifa, publishes The Secret Life of Saeed: The Pessoptimist. Habiby coined the Arabic word mutashael, which combines mutashaem (pessimist) and mutafael (optimist), and the novel’s ironic mode and refreshing wit defied the tone and conventions of Arabic fiction and poetry at the time—much of which was focused on heroic resistance or tragic defeat. 1972. Al-Asfour [The Sparrow], directed by Youssef Chahine Viewers anticipating news on the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, instead watched as Nasser came on TV to announce his resignation, leading thousands of people to flood the streets demanding that he return to office.

1972. Still from Al-Makhdu’un [The Dupes], directed by Tewfik Saleh Based on Ghassan Kanafani’s 1963 novel Men in the Sun, Tewfik Saleh’s The Dupes was produced in 1972 by Syria’s state-sanctioned National Film Organization, which gravitated toward social realist stories of class oppression that could further promote socialist values. Ghassan Kanafani’s novel Rijal fil Shams [Men in the Sun] depicts three Palestinians in Iraq who dream of reaching Kuwait in order to secure employment and a better future for their families. In the stifling midday heat, they are smuggled across the desert, hidden in an empty water tank in the back of a truck. After finally passing through the last checkpoint, almost within sight of Kuwait, the driver opens the tank only to find the men dead. 1980. Still from AlAyyam Al-Tawila [The Long Days], directed by Tewfik Saleh Set in 1959, The Long Days (1980) is an Iraqi state production that follows the story of underground revolutionaries in Baghdad who attempt the assassination of Prime Minister Abd al-Karim Qasim, who ruled until his death in Iraq’s 1963 Ramadan Revolution. In the film, news outlets report on the failed assassination attempt, but as the secret police comb the neighborhoods with house-to-house searches, the revolutionaries flee to the countryside. Among those fleeing is future president . 1984. The short stories in Ghassan Kanafani’s Palestine’s Children: Returning to Haifa and Other Stories, produced by Syrian artist Burhan Karkutli, depict Palestinian children living in hard conditions in refugee camps.

1971. Farouk El-Baaz (right), an Egyptian-American scientist, worked on NASA’s Apollo program from 1967–72, training astronauts in photography and lunar observations and advising on the selection of landing sites for each of the Apollo missions. Endeavor, the spacecraft used in the Apollo 15 mission in 1971, was a revised model that some feared would fail. For its protection and good fortune, El-Baaz’s printed the first chapter of Quran and the names of his daughters on a sheet of paper that was placed in the spacecraft and sent with the astronauts into space.

1971. Along with a plaque bearing the names of eight American astronauts and six Soviet cosmonauts who had died in the advancement of space exploration, Fallen Astronaut, a small aluminum statuette made by Belgian sculptor Paul Van Hoeydonck, was placed on the Moon by the crew of Apollo 15 on August 1. One of those listed is Yuri Gagarin, who was awarded the Order of the Nile (the highest state honor for public service) and the golden keys to the gates of the cities of Cairo and Alexandria upon his visit to Cairo in 1962.

1968. Film clip from Jordan Reportage, 35mm transferred to digital Jordan Reportage was one of several short documentaries the Jordanian Ministry of Culture made in collaboration with Soviet documentarians between 1968 and 1970. The film depicts the destruction that Jordan suffered following the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, and the Arabic-dubbed voiceover narrates the benefits of a Soviet-Arab partnership. The footage shown in this clip was shot in a Jordanian iron factory by Palestinian filmmaker Hani Jawhariyyeh. Jawhariyyeh also worked on the state-produced newsreels that would show in cinemas before film screenings, and shot several films directed by Palestinian filmmaker Mustafa Abu Ali, who also got his start in the ministry’s film department.
