College Song Alma Mater (1917) Lyrics: John Helmer Olson, Class of 1919 GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE ADOLPHUS GUSTAVUS Music: August Waldemar Anderson (Led by graduating music ensemble members) 10 Gustavus Adolphus, remember thy past! Thrice hail! Alma Mater! Thy children are true. Let songs of thy triumphs be borne on the blast. We love thee, forever our love we renew. O’er prairie and mountain forever let fame We stand by thy standard, our phalanx is strong. Carve runes of thy glory, thy deeds, ’round thy name. Thy battle: our battle, Gustavus, live long! Gustavus Adolphus, stand firm in the fight; Gustavus Adolphus, stand firm in the fight; Plant proudly thy banner on victory’s height! Plant proudly thy banner on victory’s height!

In addition to hoods signifying their bachelor of arts degrees, Gustavus graduates may wear other devices representing various academic, service, and leadership honors and memberships (e.g., horizontally striped kente cloth stoles awarded by the Office of Diversity Development and Multicultural Programs to recognize leadership in diversity initiatives and community building; veterans of military service and ROTC cadets wearing red, white, and blue honor cords; and international graduates wearing sashes on which are depicted the flags of their home countries). Election to membership in many academic honor societies is indicated by variously colored honor cords worn over the shoulders or other devices as described below, although some active local chapters at Gustavus have not adopted this practice. (Service, leadership, and other non-academic honor cords or devices are not identified in the commencement program for lack of space.)

Photography Guests at commencement are welcome to take personal photos and videos. As a courtesy to the graduates and all in attendance, we ask that you remain outside of the roped-off ceremonial area during commencement exercises. Please also be courteous to others watching and taking pictures to ensure sight lines are not obstructed. Picture-taking opportunities with the faculty will be available after the ceremony at receptions outside on Eckman Mall, or the Campus Center in case of inclement weather. Grad Images is the official photographer for the 2017 Commencement Exercises. Photographs of your graduate will be available online for viewing on their website (gradimages.com).

Live Stream GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE The 2017 Commencement Ceremony will be streamed live and archived at gustavus.edu/commencement.

Air Conditioned Viewing Beck Hall Room 101 is available for guests wishing to watch online in an air conditioned location.

Departmental Receptions Following commencement exercises, all graduates and guests are invited to a reception on Eckman Mall. See the departmental list below and the maps on the following pages for the appropriate divisional area. Photo opportunities with faculty members will be available at the receptions. If weather conditions preclude an outdoor reception, the gathering will be held in Lund Center.

Graduates and faculty will follow the faculty and student marshals out of both tunnels on the field and go into the back doors of Lund Center directly into the hockey arena and sit in the chairs on the main floor.

Guests should enter the glass doors on the west or east side of Lund Center. Guests with indoor ceremony tickets may go in to Lund Arena to sit in the bleachers or stand behind the faculty. Guests who do not have an indoor ceremony ticket may view the ceremony in the Lund Forum basketball court or in the Banquet Rooms and Evelyn Young Dining Room in the Jackson Campus Center or Beck Hall Room 101. The ceremony will also continue to be broadcast live on the Gustavus website.

Severe Weather Evacuation Shelter Locations Outside Ceremony Guests in the stadium or the grass surrounding the stadium should seek shelter in the basement of Beck Academic Hall. Students, faculty, and guests on the field should seek shelter in the Lund Center locker rooms. Those sitting in the handicap section will be assisted by Campus Safety to designated shelters in the stadium.

Inside Ceremony Students, faculty, and guests inside Lund Arena should seek shelter in the hockey or employee locker rooms on either side of the arena. Guests in overflow seating in Lund Forum should seek shelter in the main student locker rooms, or the athletic training room. If necessary, additional shelters are located in the aerobics room and restrooms on the second floor.
