Des’ Barre SDA Church Visit

On Saturday 18th April 2013 the Des’ Barre SDA Church from the area of Babonneau visited the Boys’ Training Centre. The group was given a tour of the BTC property before meeting the wards and staff on duty. The group engaged all the wards in prayer, singing, interactive games, motivational talks and served refreshments. This month the Castries Central Library, in collaboration with other community libraries, assisted the BTC in cataloguing and creating a system to utilize the collection of books. These few dedicated librarians visited the BTC every Friday to assist with cataloguing, processing, classifying and creating pocket cards and labels. In addition, librarians conducted a reading session for the wards. USAID Juvenile Justice Outreach Program: US Coast

The Saint Lucian Supermodel

On Friday 10th May 2013, a Saint Lucian Supermodel based in Italy gave a welcome surprise to the Boys Training Centre. Ms. Portia Cherry recently took part in the Hot Couture Fashion Show. She donated two barrels to the management and staff of the Boys’ Training Centre. Her donation included clothes, cleaning products, food items and schools supplies.

Information Technology

Lab

The Boys’ Training Centre will be the proud recipient of a fully furnished Information Technology Lab before the end of 2013. The project is funded by the European Funded SFA 2008 Education Enhancement through Information and Communication Technology Programme. The construction of the structure began on September 2012 and continued through to April 2013. The IT lab will be a great educational and rehabilitation instrument in diverting the wards’ focus from delinquent behaviour to more positive, meaningful activity. UNICOMER ()

CARE & PROTECTION

UNIT

The Care & Protection Unit at the Boys’ Training Centre was blessed with donations from the Unicomer Group (Courts Limited) in Saint Lucia. The project began in January 2013 with an initial assessment by Courts representatives. Afterwards, materials for the windows and lockers were financed and delivered by Courts. Courts utilized the skills and talent of the Woodwork Instructor, Mr. Augustin Octave, and the BTC wards to build the shelves, lockers and windows. Courts primary goal was to enhance the living conditions of the wards housed for Care and Protection. Through their parent company Unicomer (Courts) made a further donation of a living set and appliances such as washing machine, fridge and a microwave oven.

BARBADOS

INVITATIONAL SWIM MEET

The Management and Staff of the Boys’ Training Centre (BTC) in collaboration with the Cobra Adventures Swim Club have undertaken the life-saving sport of swimming with the wards at the BTC. Throughout 2013 the wards have been trained and mentored by the coaches of Cobra Adventures Swim Club: Vanessa Eugene and Stefania Quaranta- Felix. Furthermore, with limited use of a pool, the wards of BTC have registered and participated in several local swim meets at the Aquatics Centre and two (2) regional swim meets in and . Four (4) wards accompanied by Mr. Alvin Xavier (BTC Coach) under the Cobra Adventures Swim Club Banner embarked on another overseas tour on 24th to 26th May 2013 at the Barbados (BASA) International Invitational Swim Challenge 2013. Although, no medal was attained, all BTC wards improve their times tremendously. The future looks bright for BTC swimming and sports.

The sporting discipline has reaped substantial benefits including

 learning a life- saving skill,  interacting with children their age and  the opportunity to represent themselves, the BTC, the swim club and Saint Lucia.

The Management and Staff of the BTC hopes that this continuing program will reap great rewards for the wards placed at the lone juvenile detention facility on island.
