A STUDY CASE IN THE ALVEAR FOR- MATION (LOWER PLEISTOCENE). The classification rules to establish a phytolith systematics are outlined, in such a way allowing a precise treatment and delimitation of their ranks according to the botanical no- menclatural code. The morphological terminology used is explained and these rules are applied to the predominant phytolith morphotypes of the Alvear Formation in their type area, Puerto General Alvear (Diamante department, Entre Ríos). Its sediments were deposited during an semi-arid interval in typical Lower Pleistocene pampean conditions. Globulolithum gen. nov. (G. sphaeroechinulathum sp. nov., G. spha- eropsilathum sp. nov.), Aculeolithum gen. nov. (A. rostrathum sp. nov., A. acuminathum sp. nov., A. ancistrat- hum sp. nov., A. aciculathum sp. nov.), Flabelolithum gen. nov. (F. euflabelathum sp. nov., F. complanathum sp. nov.) and Macroprismatolithum gen. nov. (M. psilaristathum sp. nov., M. denticulathum sp. nov., M. ondulat- hum sp. nov., M. excavathum sp. nov.) are described. This assemblage represents the first fossil record for this formation. Resumen. Se plantean las pautas clasificatorias para establecer una sistemática de fitolitos que permita un preciso tratamiento y delimitación de sus categorías, de acuerdo a las normativas de la nomenclatura bo- tánica. Conjuntamente se expone la terminología morfológica que se utiliza y se aplican estas pautas a la descripción de los morfotipos fitolíticos más abundantes de la asociación fitolítica hallada en la Formación Alvear, expuesta en su área tipo, la localidad de Puerto General Alvear (departamento Diamante, Entre Ríos), cuyos sedimentos han sido depositados durante un intervalo de clima semiárido de características típicamente pampeanas del Pleistoceno inferior. Se describen las características de los géneros Globulolithum gen. nov. (G. sphaeroechinulathum sp. nov., G. sphaeropsilathum sp. nov.), Aculeolithum gen. nov. (A. rostrathum sp. nov., A. acuminathum sp. nov., A. ancistrathum sp. nov., A. aciculathum sp. nov.), Flabelolithum gen. nov. (F. euflabelathum, sp. nov. F. complanathum sp. nov.) y Macroprismatolithum gen. nov. (M. psilaristathum sp. nov., M. denticulathum sp. nov., M. ondulathum sp. nov., M. excavathum sp. nov.). Here I illustrate the problem – multiple names in the UK for the same cultivated plant. Genus, species & cultivar names all varying on displayed and marketed plants. All these are the same species. To decide which name is correct Steve Renvoize & I had to go as far as conserving a species name in the journal Taxon. The genus Pleioblastus is considered appropriate on the grounds of morphology and molecular data. In that genus it is now correctly called Pleioblastus viridistriatus, but you will still see these other names around. Popping in to Tesco’s, I saw a nice little bamboo plant on the stands outside. It had an authoritative label, saying Fountain Bamboo. It is not Fountain Bamboo, which is Fargesia nitida. On the back it says Fargesia rufa, which it also is not. It is actually Fargesia dracocephala ‘Rufa’, Dragon-head Bamboo. It also says it comes from the mountains of western China, while in fact it comes from Central China, but that is not so important as getting the name so wrong. How have we got into this position in Europe? This disinformation would not happen in the US, where we have verified and standardised bamboo names for most of the horticulturally available bamboos. Founded in 1984, Bamboo Garden has a diverse collection of more than 300 bamboo species and forms on 20 pastoral acres near North Plains, Oregon. Here mature bamboo groves are cast in a beautiful natural setting of rolling hills, ponds, mountain stream, and wooded backdrop. Customers of the nursery are offered golf cart tours of the extensive grounds. Europe has a number of splendid bamboo gardens, and a few very famous ones that are connected with a bamboo nursery, where one can see many species of bamboo in mature natural groves and then have the opportunity to purchase the same bamboos for one’s own garden. America now has an equivalent in the Bamboo Garden. Owner Ned Jaquith, an ardent bamboo enthusiast, has introduced countless people to the world of bamboo and served as a mentor to countless more---myself included. Nothing seems to please Ned more than introducing another person to bamboo. His welcom- ing enthusiasm carries through to the Bamboo Gar- den’s knowledgeable staff, who are adept at discuss- ing bamboos with experts and novices alike. Nursery manager Noah Bell oversees the operation, includ- ing nursery, office, and sales. Maintenance foreman Reveriano Ramirez directs bamboo propagation and care. Bamboo Garden is an impressive operation with many fine people in key roles working to make it so. Like Bamboo Garden, the Bamboo Garden catalog is something special too. Here, we identify the nature, abundance and organization of all the repetitive DNA families in oats (Avena sativa,2n =6x = 42, AACCDD), a recognized health-food, and its wild relatives. Results: Whole-genome sequencing followed by k-mer and RepeatExplorer graph-based clustering analyses enabled assessment of repetitive DNA composition in common oat and its wild relatives’ genomes. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)-based karyotypes are developed to understand chromosome and repetitive sequence evolution of common oat. We show that some 200 repeated DNA motifs make up 70% of the Avena genome, with less than 20 families making up 20% of the total. Retroelements represent the major component, with Ty3/Gypsy elements representing more than 40% of all the DNA, nearly three times more abundant than Ty1/Copia elements. DNA transposons are about 5% of the total, while tandemly repeated, satellite DNA sequences fit into 55 families and represent about 2% of the genome. The Avena species are monophyletic, but both bioinformatic comparisons of repeats in the different genomes, and in situ hybridization to metaphase chromosomes from the hexaploid species, shows that some repeat families are specific to individual genomes, or the A and D genomes together.
