    Jean Harlow ~ 20 Films Harlean Harlow Carpenter - later Jean Harlow - was born in Kansas City, Missouri on 3 March 1911. After being signed by director Howard Hughes, Harlow's first major appearance was in Hell's Angels (1930), followed by a series of critically unsuccessful films, before signing with Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer in 1932. Harlow became a leading lady for MGM, starring in a string of hit films including Red Dust (1932), Dinner At Eight (1933), Reckless (1935) and Suzy (1936). Among her frequent co-stars were William Powell, Spencer Tracy and, in six films, Clark Gable. Harlow's popularity rivalled and soon surpassed that of her MGM colleagues Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. By the late 1930s she had become one of the biggest movie stars in the world, often nicknamed "The Blonde Bombshell" and "The Platinum Blonde" and popular for her "Laughing Vamp" movie persona. She died of uraemic poisoning on 7 June 1937, at the age of 26, during the filming of Saratoga. The film was completed using doubles and released a little over a month after Harlow's death. In her brief life she married and lost three husbands (two divorces, one suicide) and chalked up 22 feature film credits (plus another 21 short / bit-part non-credits, including Chaplin's City Lights). The American Film Institute (damning with faint praise?) ranked her the 22nd greatest female star in Hollywood history. As we approach a critical election on January 5, 2021, it is clear that Georgia voters must have confidence in the election process going forward. To that end, below you will find two common-sense suggestions: a rule that should be promulgated by the State Election Board (the “SEB”) and additional resources of which the Office of the Secretary of State (the “SOS”) or the SEB could take advantage. I. Absentee Ballot Application and Mail-In Absentee Ballot Signature Review Process. As the process currently stands, when a voter wishes to vote early by mail, they submit an Absentee Ballot Application (“Application”) either through the mail or online. When a local Board of Registrars (the “BOR”) receives a paper Application, typically, a single employee of the BOR is responsible for the initial review of a signature on a paper Application. If that paper Application is accepted, the BOR mails an Absentee Ballot to the voter. The process for reviewing signatures on the external envelope of a returned Absentee Ballot is the same – a single employee of the BOR is allowed to “approve” a signature without oversight by other employees or independent observers.

    The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club ________________________________________________________________________________ February 2019 By Dave Badertscher; photos by Linda Lovejoy The Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club held its annual Gameboree banquet and fundraiser on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at the Atlanta Marriott Northwest at Galleria. This year’s theme was “All-Stars, Gold Gloves and National League Honors.” More than 180 Braves fans, honored guests, and Braves officials turned out for the Fan Club’s largest event of the year. Emcee Paul Byrd (pictured below) was a big hit. The reception and silent auction opened at 5:00 with a fine selection of Braves and other baseball memorabilia. Thanks go to Silent Auction and Raffle Coordinator Nate Morgan and his crew, as well as to Fan Club members who generously donated items. As usual, all proceeds go to the Phil Niekro Scholarship Fund. This year guests in the Auction Room were entertained by Braves organist Matthew Kaminski. Quite a nice treat! Once everyone was seated for dinner in the Cobb Ballroom, Fan Club President Howard Evans introduced the guests and award winners at the head table. Atlanta’s favorite tenor, Timothy Miller, sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” During dinner folks enjoyed a slide presentation highlighting the Fan Club’s many fun and worthwhile activities over the past year. Following dinner, Howard thanked Club members who were involved in planning, organizing, and setting up this year’s event, especially Gameboree Program Coordinator Wayne Coleman and Logistics Coordinator Judy Messer. Howard talked about upcoming Club activities in 2019, including six monthly social gatherings in the SunTrust Cabanas, our Major League trip to Washington, DC, on June 21-23, and minor league trips to see the Rome Braves and the Gwinnett Stripers this summer.
