Stewardship Message: Most are familiar with the scriptural quote from Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd. There is nothing I shall want.” This passage serves as the Responsorial Psalm on this 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time because it supports the other readi ngs with two key ideas: that we must place our trust in the Lord, and that we inherit life from our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. At the time St. Paul was writing his Letter to the Ephesians (our second Reading), Paul was under house arrest in Rome and awaiting trial. He was allegedly accused by the Jews of taking a Gentile into a temple. Therefore, part of Paul’s statement, “For he (Christ) is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh, abolishing the law with its commandments and legal claims,” is saying essentially the Lordship of Jesus is not greater than any difference you may feel you have with others — that Jesus is our Savior and our Shepherd. In the Gospel Reading from Mark, the idea of shepherding lies at the heart. “When he (Jesus) dis embarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.” In other words, He began to feed them with the Word of God. That is what we do during this part of our Mas s; we hear Holy Scripture. These are the Words of the Lord. He is our shepherd. We are His sheep. As always, Jesus teaches us a valuable lesson about stewardship through today’s readings. To the Lord, the needs of others were more important than His own. When we share our time, our talents, and our treasure, we are not only following our Good Shepherd, we are also living His Gospel call to shepherd others by giving of ourselves. The Catholic Steward

Fall Festival Update: There are still lots of the Big Ticket Raffle packets waiting to be picked up. If you do sell all your tickets, please remember to fill out the incentive drawing form at the top of the letter and return it with your ticket stubs and money/checks. The first early bird incentive drawing for $300 will be on Monday, July 30. Your form will stay in the drawing though all three drawings. Please watch the thermometer outside the Giving Center to see how we are doing in reaching our goal. Feature Event: The Silent Auction is in need of “theme baskets” that most of you remember from past auctions. Please watch for the small kiosk in the entryway for more information on how you can help with the silent auction and we will have empty baskets available for you to take home and fill. By creating your own medium to large baskets, you save time for the Silent Auction Team. The Team is also looking for medium to large empty baskets for our volunteers to fill. Reminder, July is the month we are collecting gift cards for the baskets and restaurant raffle. Please deposit your donated gift cards in the large colorful box next to the raffle packets. Thank you!

Pictorial Directory: Please BE INCLUDED in our upcoming photography event! It has been five years since we last produced a pictorial directory for our parishioners. We had 525 families participate at that time. We have had many new parishioners join our parish in the last five years so we think this is a good time to update this great networking tool. Our goal this year is to have at least 550 families participating. We just reached the 100 mark in reserved appointments and there are plenty of spots still available. You can sign up on line at our website www.guardian-angels.org, on our Facebook Page, or we have signup sheets near the Information Center each weekend before and after Mass. You can also cal l the church office 651 -738-2223 and someone will be glad to assist in rese rving your date. Technology has come a long way and now you will be able to download the directory on your tablet or cell phone. Please remember you get a free 8X10 portrait just for participating.

POH Project: In the next couple of weeks a Handy Angels team, led by Doug Ashton and Dean Sherburne , from the Men’s Club will be remodeling the “stage/old altar” area in Peter O’Neill Hall. The steps and the upper platform will be removed along w ith the two areas where the old speakers were. During our large events, the steps have become a tripping and fall hazard. We will move the back wall forward and the goal is to create a large storage area for supplies and equipment for the Fall Festival and Fish Fry events behind the wall. This new storage area will also provide a better storage for funeral and general supplies.

Improvements: A few weeks ago we shared that we were going to pave the area west of the cemetery where we store summer/winter equipment, Christmas tree trailer, Boy Scout Trailer and our black dirt, top soil, overburden from cemetery graves and our compost pile. The area is now complete and we thank Tom Hermanson from the Men’s Club and Jason Kustritz and Tom Specht from our maintenanc e crew for getting everything put back and doing the landscaping around the whole area. Funds from the Cemetery Committee and the Capital Project savings account paid for the project.

Reminder , as we start the new fiscal year, the plate collection on every third weekend helps us replenish the Capital Project Savings account to pay for improvements and repairs to our buildings and grounds.

Keep smiling,

Denny

PS: In today’s second reading, Saint Paul reminds us that Christ is creating a new world order: one that brings about relationshi ps based on love, peace, reconciliation, hope and unity. As a Eucharistic community, we are stewards of Christ’s new creation. How are we promoting peace and reconciliation in our own lives? How are we showing love for our neighbors? What are we doing to encourage unity and understanding among those with whom we gather around the Lord’s Table each week?

Thought of the Week: Let the Church always be a place of mercy and hope, where everyone is welcomed, loved and forgiven. Pope Francis
